Wouldn't circular grip training and training your grip though ranges of motion be more benificial than static training? I.e. Grippers?  I can't think of an event (Nor much practical REAL LIFE) applications for static grip training. Nothing you really do in life is that static. Even Mechanics are working through ranges of motion.

while on that thought process, Wouldn't suitcase Deadlifts and one arm deadlifts be more benificial to the highland athlete over standard deadlifts?  I know I know "but brian you must have a good base strength level". Ok then why not get a good base applicable to what you do? This is a HIGHLAND ATHLETICS board. Too many times It seems it turns into a POWERLIFTING BOARD.  Great you can deadlift 600lbs. Find me any even in the HIGHLAND GAMES that allows you two hands, Belt, Kneewraps, Chalk and to see how SLOW you can move something. Even worse in a VERY limited range of motion over a VERY Short path.

Why not LIGHTEN up the weight (GASP!!!!!) And move it FASTER over a longer range of motion?  I.e the Snatch.  but even then I read guys talking about their 1RM with the snatch. That is fine. Why not get out the old video camera and tape yourself moving say 185, lbs, 200lbs, 225lbs and seriously look at how SLOWER you get.  Why not, and I know this is WAY out there, Back it down to say 190lbs and move it FAST for REPS? then move it to 195, 200,205,210 but ONLY as you can make 205 move as quickly as 185 did. YES it IS possible....Over time.

Just like everyone else on here I am just adding my own two cents and thoughts.

The 42 is so much more humane than the 56. You luck old man!!! Ive
been throwing a 35 all winter. Im a little worried the 56 will shock me
once the snow melts and I can throw outside again. Ive tanked up to 290
this winter. Im going to try and get down to 270 by May to be at a good
fighting weight for the beginning of the season. Im looking foward to
seeing you all compete at the MWC this year. Lots of games between now
and then. Should be an interesting year of some great competitions here
in the east. Cant wait!!!!!

last 10 days have been tough ..partially tore left bicep(only muscle-tendon still intact-orth says rest three weeks) so I've been doing 1 arm pulling(d/b cleans and snatches(nailed 132lb barbell snatch for two-tough balancing)and such ) so the last couple of days as Terri is hitting the gym have been spinining ,drills, etc so today went out spinning wfh with 42 launching it to the sky big throws so should be a goood year..dw

Some people just like moving heavy things.  I like hitting a 350 push press, I like hitting 600+ deads and squats.  It's fun to me.

Is it necessarily game applicable?  Nope, but I like it.  You know what i do to get better at the events?  I do the events.

I am not sure the dead is the greatest lift for the games, but I like it.  When Petur Gundmonson used to live here and lift with me, he would hate to do lats and tell me they won't make me throw further.  I would tell him, Yea, but you won't throw less either with a big set of em.  What are you doing in the offseason when you can't toss or compete?  I like the iron.  I don't have any grip problems with the iron or the impliments.  I am a skinny guy, I need meat.  Everyone has a different card they need to fill their hand.  Don't expect everyone to throw down the same discard in your game of fish.  Mike Baab and I are almost identical ages, near the same in height, near weight, two girls and a wife, clearly I am not in the relm of his athletic abilities and that just proves my point.  I need much different things than him and can't even do some of the things a gifted athlete like that does.  Look at your weekness and work it.  Don't knock lifting 600 until you DO it, very much fun.

Ever seen someone snatch a half decent weight slowly? I personally haven't. I agree about deadlifting however.
