How does one fix a Flat throw? I have no height on my stone and I tend to push it straight out. I figure if I had some height I would gain 3-5 feet in my putt. I have tried biting my right side of my shirt to hold my head down. But it seem .well not seems .I am very uncomfortable in the trig with a stone. Not sure how to overcome this

I will try and post some video on youtube.

thats the right spirit Chris! see ? no retiring for you!

throw at a volley ball net or a string tied across two stepladders. set yourself
just close enough that the throw HAS to go up to get over the string. Do
what it takes to move it to that height and find what works...

head obviously must be up and the back arched and chest up

Chris - I've seen you throw stone - try tucking your elbow/stone under your chin more to LIFT it up....LESS like a REAL shotputter who's got the shot up on the side of his neck w. elbow higher.....Ryan Goddam Vierra calls it the Pillar of Power...push/lift it UP over a 10 foot wall right in front of you.....AND USE YOUR LEFT ARM TO SNAP CHEST AROUND and create seperation b/n shoulders and hips.

great drill I have used with Terri(when she had this problem in the past)...go to a football field with uprights...start about 5 paces out-bramer the stone over uprights..if you make it..go back three feet..keep going till you can't make it over the uprights..seems to work on directing you up..was taught to me by a great stone tosser..Mr 17/20

Thanks.. I will try the V-Net or string to see if it helps

Also, I notice in my video, that am standing/spinning erect instead of being low so I can explode upwards to delivery a high projectile stone.. Its like I have the power in my turn but it fades quickly.

How can I roll or pop my hip under my torso? Not sure if I explained this well. to open my chest up to the trig..

Wil...am retired.. will be back in a couple years after all these injuries heal up... then am coming for you

Here is a thread that started as talking about throwing a 28lb. stone, but soon had some good insight on the stand throw and getting the ball up. It might help.

http://www.sorinexforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=162 - http://www.sorinexforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=162

Dave Z is a 55' (soon to be 60') shot putter, Nick Garcia is the shortest and lightest man to have thrown the shot over 60' (I think almost 62') He is like 5'6" and 240lb. He understand the spin...a lot.

My grand daughter age -10 WAS undefeated in age group track based largely (pun intended) on her size-5' 6" 160-lbs....a little quick girl beat her for first and she asked to train outside of her regular practice for once.   She was having the same issues a lot of you are having.  It was garbage night and lo and behold....stack 3-cans on top of one another ...if you hit one it wil fall forward !  SHe ended up throwing 5-feet farther....YEAH

GOOD LUCK and I'll have Merrikka thank the little girl with V-E-L-O-C-I-T-Y for making "her" and you better !!!!

I have NO T&F experience what-so-ever. I tend to listen and watch many good putters.

A couple time a year, I will enter the trig and I will throw this massive stone..when I exit the trig am thinking "now if I can copy that throw..I will do ok"

I will take everyone advice and try to put it into a routine where I feel comfortable

I think who ever has the strongest legs with the best vertical jump wins the stone event.

OK question that I think goes along with this one.  I've been working alot on leg drive and notice alot more force on my throws.  I'm not however getting alot more distance.  What I am getting is alot of the stone rolling after it hits the ground.  Yesterday I had a very bad case where the stone went in the air my typical pathetic amount, then rolled out of my yard through my neighbors yard, and almost into the next guys yard (all flat, no hill at all).  I'm thinking if there is enough energy on that stone to roll that far then I sure as heck should be putting it in the air alot further.  So my question is...Does a short throw with a long roll indicate a flat throw?

I would say flat If it has that much energy after hits.  I would equate to a grounder vs. pop fly.  The trick is to find that magical sweet spot elevation in between.  I am a work in progress but I'm guessing maybe 60-70 degrees???

between 42.5 and 45 degrees

the other two variables would be:

speed of relase

height of release

Put those 3 together, and it will go far.

Not only do I throw my stone flat...I throw my weights flat to..It is like am regressing with my throws.

Maybe I need to step back and just work on foot drills Ryan Vierra showed me... No weights..just drills

you might look at your overall posture when throwing... good athletic position you are upright chest up... the weights and stones will be released in an upward trajectory(sp?)  bent over or slouched, or weight pulling you out of position the release will be affected usually flat

If you are right handed, try to get your right hip to drive upwards out of the power position into your throw.  Also, try getting your chest up and watch the stone leave your hand as you throw.  Just don't watch it land, that will cause some people to fall out of the front.

See I notice when I try and keep my chest up..I tend to foul (over the trig) it like I have no control..

also I notice that my throws went down in the past 2 years

OS from a 40-42' to 33-36

LWD 60' to 54'

HWD 29-32 to 25-26

Not sure what I did in my style but it seem I can not find it... Just this is another reason I need to re-evaluate my style and work on some core movements and stability type exercise (maybe some chain work out).

If I get some video is anyone interested in evaluating it and telling me what am doing wrong.. I cant see it..Maybe blind to self criticism.

As you can see by my decline..am get discouraged

I learned that the hard way.  I finaly felt like I threw a stone at Pipes looked up to see it go way past the mark I put where my tiny little PR was and proceeded to walk halfway out into the field.  The throws coach at the University where my wife works said everybody does that once, but not twice.
