I just spoke to Don Hollywood Stewart, athletic director for the NH Highland Games. He stated that the events will be Braemar and open stones, 28 lb wfd (no 42), heavy and light hammer, caber and wob - standing only and he would like to have the 40-44 and 45-49 throw the 56lb weight for wob. Why not a regular game? Two hammers and not the weights? Are we tossing a beer keg also? I am ok with no 42, just throw the 56 in distance and height. I know I won't come all the way up there for a partial or mutilated event. Is there something wrong with doing the seven events in the regular order because we hit 40?

The events should remain the same as they are for all master's competitions...There is no reason to change anything from what has been done at past championships.

Hey-
I'm for whatever Don wants to throw- 2 stones, ... 2 weights, ... 2 hammers, ... 2 sheafs,... whatever. Why does it matter?
I'm confident that Don will do what's best for the contest.

The order of my best events are as follows: Sheaf, WOB, HWFD...... and you know what, I'm not going to cry about it, I'm just going to go and throw (and the later figure up where I would have placed had we had those events!!!). But, seriously, if that's the way Don and Bill Scruggs have set it up (I assume Bill signed off on this as it is my understanding that the Scottish Masters AND the AD approve the events) then that is what we will throw. I just hope we have a sheaf one of these years!!!!! (and my sincerest apologies to Rich Doria....NOT!)
A funny story, last year there was no sheaf in Oregon, but after we were done, several of us found the beer tent (hmmm, wonder how that happened) and on the other side of the field we noted they had a sort of "walk on" field for spectators to try the events. There was a caber, a 28 for distance......AND A SHEAF. We laughed about it, as it was my understanding they weren't having the sheaf because they didn't have the standards. Some day, if I host the event, I'll have two sheafs!!!!! (and Rich can boycott if he wants). My point is, the AD is the AD. There is a list of events on the Masters web site and as long as they select 5 of those then its a contest. If they start going off that board, then we need to draw a line. Lets go, throw, and then run the kilted mile to the beer tent.

i have to disagree withthe idea of its up to the games AD! if we
are holding a world championship there must be consistancy in
which events are held to constitute a winner. this is not
supposidly another local game. there are records for each age
group and should be a sense of a bigger more elite game if it is
indeed a championship. jacking around every year at the whim
of whoever puts it on takes away from the crediability of it being
called a championship. not including the 42# does this and
changing from the "standard" 40+ of the 42# to a 56 for 40
year olds when we have had that across the country and in all
past mwc is inapproprite. sheaf or not? either have it every
year or skip it . decide once for all, either way and hold to that
decision. either this is a championship or it just a masters
regional game? i hope its a REAL CHAMPIONSHIP that
reflects the original idea and goals that started with the 2001
game and were so well reflected at springfield in 2003.

could the reason for no 42 wob for 40-44 & 45-49 classes have anything to do with the Ad doesn't want his record in the 42 wob crushed by 40-44(hickey) 45-49(baab or Myles)just an observation as why the Ad hasn't justified his reasoning for throwing the 56 for these classes

I wouldn't worry it too much.
Angus Billy will sort this one out.
Sure it will be very much the same as past MWC's as far as events contested and weights thrown.

possibly its because don knows that he and baab and myles and some others will throw the 42 this year further than some of us mortals throw the 28.
having said that, IMO, the 42 is a standard and we should stick with it.
of course, i meant "you all" when i said "we."

thank you wayne
just for your info, on the eve of the eve of my rotator cuff surgery and floppy biceps reattachment, i did the following:
17lb stone (braemar) 37-7 (bad arm)
42 wob 15-0 (good arm)
16lb hammer 95-1 (bad arm and good arm)
i am going to miss all the fun, so you and the highlanders better have some anyway.

Hey-
Wait just a minute there FrayedPlaid!
You say that you threw 37' open stone... wrong handed?
And a 15' WOB, ... wrong handed?
And a 95' light hammer with a frayed shoulder?
I happen to know that you are well over one hundred years old and prone to storytelling and exaggeration, ... these throws and distances are not physically possible given your advanced age and the previously discribed injuries.
What is going on here?

as mr nixon used to say (see how old i am?): "let me be perfectly clear--"
37 stone was with the bad arm, right handed; the floppy biceps was heavily wrapped, and actually does not interfere with the stone put motion. the dang shoulder does not hurt; why am i getting cut?
(because i want my strength back.)
the wob was left handed ( i have done 16 that way).
the hammer was right handed, and i had two over 95 and one at 94 plus.
if you don't believe me, just ask one of my horses.
sorry about the sweet corn, its not on my diet (239lbs and going down).

Hey Floppy-
It was one of your horses who said that we should question these assertions.
How can you throw stone, ... or pull on a hammer with a torn bicep?
That's crazy!

the arm is numb; no feeling, no pain
no pain, throw anyway
honestly, at this lighter bodyweight my speed is way up. whatever happens now, i will never get huge again.
hey you 190s, are you reading this?
good luck all season long,i will be watching...and waiting for the day
