Hey-
I heard youse guys telling Dave "Skinny" Carl about packing on the weight. And I can enforce that idea with this little story.
I'm proud to say that when I got started throw'n, I put on 30 pounds (without a change in my waist size) from the excitement, hard training, protein, ... and the guinness. And I improved during that time in every event. Since then I've cut back down to maintain my weight at 197lb so that I can compete in the middleweight division, but I know that your body weight can help you in this sport if you manage it properly.
Unfortunately, now that I'm over the hill my legs seem to be getting shorter and heavier, ... and I'm rounder at the beltline. What gives? Is it the gravity? What goes up, ... and all that?
Anyway, Dave ... learn to eat eggs. Crack 4 of em into a glass, add a little milk, stir with a fork and chug'em down every morning... but be sure to drink it near the sink. It'll get your day started with the best possible protein and then you've gotta get as much done as possible to make it work for you the rest of the day.
Trust me on this one, ... if you can get past the gag reflex,

Yeah, and keep a garbage can handy for a while until you get used to the taste. A buddy and I started doing this in 10th grade to bulk up, I got big, he got salmonella. Just watch out for the shells, that's what usually gets people sick

For those of you that are "uneasy" about the salmonella try this:
http://www.lanaseggwhites.com/ - http://www.lanaseggwhites.com/
Or just purchase some basic protein powder where the main components are egg and milk protein. Every issue of Milo comes with an ad for just that. It's call Just Protein...I think.
Just another alternative

I was curious about what the actual risk of salmonella is from eggs, so I looked it up:
http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dbmd/diseaseinfo/salment_g.htm - http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dbmd/diseaseinfo/salment_g.htm
"Although most infected hens have been found in the northeastern
United States, the infection also occurs in hens in other areas
of the country. In the Northeast, approximately one in 10,000
eggs may be internally contaminated. In other parts of the United
States, contaminated eggs appear less common. Only a small number
of hens seem to be infected at any given time, and an infected
hen can lay many normal eggs while only occasionally laying an
egg contaminated with the Salmonella bacterium."
OK, so the probability that a given egg has salmonella is 1/10,000 or
less (depending on where you live). If you eat something like 500
eggs a year (about what I eat), the probability of encountering an egg
with salmonella is about 5% in a given year. That is neither a
very high probability nor a very low probability. Whether or not
you take that risk is up to you.

Any ideas for gaining weight for those who are lactose
intolerant and tend to have boughts of rapid weight loss
inducing craps?
I have been stuck at 210 for about a year. Although, before the
crap issue that effects me now, I was at 220 and dropped to
180 (in a month - thank you swollen intestines!)
I train like a mad man. Hit the gym. All that.
But, dietarily, I can not take as many chances as my fellow raw-
egg eating throwers.
So, give me some advice on what to eat to gain good bulking
protein, that is easy to digest? Is my only option chicken?
Dave — I remember in my first games at Alma, there was some
really skinny guy (I think his name was Joel). He looked more
like a marathon runner than a highland games athlete. But,
anyway, he had perfect technique in all of the events and
kicked the crap out of some of the biggest guys on the field. I
don't buy the arguement about bulk being the main thing in this
sport. Technique comes first...bulk is only a nice add on after
that.

How lactose intolerant are you? This is a serious question.
Any decent whey protein should contain a negligible quantity of
lactose, and shouldn't bother most people who are lactose
intolerant. Then again, a friend of mine was so lactose
intolerant he couldn't even eat anything made with whey (like salad
dressings, even), so there clearly are exceptions.

Again let me suggest the previous link. Eggs have no lactose in them.
Milk proteins, however, are whey and casein. The whey is absorbed quickly while the casein is absorbed slowly. The benefit to drinking both at the same time is that you maintain a better and longer nitrogen balance. There is great benefit to this for those that are trying to put on weight. I have had good success with a product called Grow. It contains milk proteins but most (maybe all) of those that I know have little or no tolerance problems with it. A company called Biotest makes it. Type the name in to Google and you should find it. If you need the link let me know.

My tolerance level is funny. sometimes I can have a glass of
milk or a bit of cheese, others, don't even think about it. I have
tried Whey and the results were not desirable (think brown
explosion). I get the same result after using creatine. I will look
into this Grow. Perhaps small amounts will have desirable
effects.
In the meantime, I will continue what I have been doing. Eating
tons of meat and potatoes, mixed with desserts made with soy
milk (why they hell do they call it soy milk? Shouldn't it be
called soy juice?) Chasers of Boost are great too...the high
protein one.

McBain,
It is common knowledge that most people who live in the
northern part of lower Michigan suffer from some type of
digestive disorder. I believe that is why you told me you carried
a wide assortment of corks (think brown explosion) to each
competition.

You are correct. It's from all the whiskey we drink to get us
through the winters. It reeks havoc on the intestines.
The cork sizes depend on the spincter's mood that day. The
wife let's me know which one to use. If she says, "You are a
asshole." I use the mid sized one. If she says, "GOD DAMMIT,
YOU %@%$ ASSHOLE." I need a large for the day.

You know, I don't get the uproar over that. The 730 calories in
that meal would be appropriate for any active man over about 160
lbs. This is completely consistent with the target customer,
young men in physically active jobs. The fat content may not be
the best, but most of their breakfast offerings are similar.
One news report I heard said something like, "yeah, but that would be
half the recommended daily caloric intake for a typical woman."
So, I guess men should be forced to order two breakfasts so that
women won't feel bad watching them eat a big breakfast sandwich?
Sheesh.

You are spot on Mr. Hill. Eventually, ( in the next 5 years) the appropriate focus (ie., genetic predisposition) will be publicized, & the information passed on in the popular media willl be protein content, simple & complex carbohydrate levels, & hopefully the omega-3, et. al., fatty acid composition. The good news for most HG athletes is that if you have no first degree relatives with heart attacks before the age of 50, & you do not have high blood pressure or diabetes, then what you eat, especially if you are physically active, (& this does NOT mean aerobics) plays a very small role in your cardiovascular health. You will get fat if you eat the "wrong" stuff, but it will not lead to the gloomy, unenjoyable future portrayed by the spandex-clad Barbie dolls of the "Oprah" circuit.

Do what the Sumo wrestlers do. Do not eat during the day, then eat tremendous amounts of food just before going bed. The reverse is what people do to reduce, that is , eat during the day, small meals, and nothing after 7 PM, well, an apple is okay, but not just before go bed. The negative is that your sex life will go down to nearly nothing. Depending upon how long you've been married, you may not notice any difference at all.

Eating before you go to bed has nothing to do with weight
loss or gain. That said if the sumo
gains weight it is because of how much he eat not when he eat. On that note I
think I’m going to go to the China Buffet.
If you what to gain Squat. Squat deep. Squat often. I think
my weight is stable at 280
Oh if you can’t drink milk, http://www.greatlakesbrewing.com/whatsOnTap.php - drink Liquid bread . monster IPA (Never
touched a supplement in my life!)
if you were to consume a high protein low-fat meal prior to bed, it might
actually aid in the process of fat loss! Protein is highly thermic. A lot of
work is required to take those protein chains, break them down into dipeptides
and tripeptides (small chains of 2 or 3 amino acids), transport them through the
wall of the digestive tract, and then virtually reassemble them as new cell
tissue. That means your body's going to increase momentary metabolism as you
sleep, increasing its caloric burn, absorbing and assimilating those vital amino
acids necessary to maintain or increase lean body mass (muscle tissue).

G-man is correct about the night eating. It won't neccasarily make you fat. It may not help in lossing weight though. All food, though, does have at least some thermogenic effect. If you like, you could simplify it to: Calories in VS. Calories out. Are you taking in more than you are expending? Then you can start to fine tune what you are eating. You really do get out of your body what you put in.
This may sound like heresy to some but as you increase your calories try to limit you simple sugar intake and intake of "bad" fats i.e. saturated. Oh, and try to not combine the two...ever. This will help you control your insuline level throughout the day and will help increase your performance. The one time when simple sugars are beneficial, preferably maltodextrose, is post workout. By manipulating your insuline levels at this time you will use the food you eat to restore your glycogen levels and repair your muscle as opposed to storing it as adipose tissue (read:fat).
Here Dave, I've got a link for you to help you figure out how much to eat. Beyond that the best tip I've ever gotten was to write down what you eat for a week. You may find that you are grossly over-estimating how much you are eating.

Oh, I had the same problem the first time I did it. The bottom section is not how many times you work out in a week, it is how many times you work out in a day. For most that is once.
The calories will be high though. It is a "massive" eating calculator. Most people are shocked by how many calories they need to eat but again this is if you are trying to gain weight. If you are 6'5" and 295lbs. you'll have to take in a ton of calories. But do you really need more weight at that point. Hell, maintanence for a guy that size is already high enough.
The bottom line is if you want to grow, you need to eat accordingly. Lift heavy, eat heavy, get heavy.
