I have been approached by a small college whose athletics are under NAIA rules. They were wondering if it would be possible for some of their throwers to participate in the games.

I thought it was a strange question because all are welcome and QC games hosted at least three Division III Track Athletes last fall .... Then he started telling me about the NAIA restrictions which are much harsher than NCAA's.

  • They cannot pay any registration fees
  • They can not receive any awards

To get around this, the college has explored whether it was possible to trade labor in setting up/ taking down events for registration fees.  Apparently, the NAIA has no problem with this and thus, his question was: Would I trade set up help for free registration?

I already do that so I have no problems, although I am not sure whether T-shirts and lunch count as prizes.

My question to other AD's is:

How would you handle this situation?

If the thrower placed 3rd, would you give the 3rd place prizes to the 4th place thrower?

Wow, why so strict... Yes, I would trade set-up for registration fees. I would think that because t-shirts and lunch are given to all the athletes, it wouldn't count as a prize. Yes, the awards for any of their finishes should go to the next person or I suppose you could list these track athletes as throwing for "p.r.only" and not put their scores into the equation. They would still have the experience of competing in a highland games and would hopefully be inclined to join the ranks later...

l'd give the prize to that athletes' parents if the athlete wasn't ready to accept it for their own self.  NAIA (and NCAA) rules are nothing but a way for schools to reserve a student's labor (the act of competing) all to themselves!!

ln 30 years, l've only had one student refuse money and that one had me make the check out to his/her mother!

Everybody does!  But then if everybody did, the West Coast might break off and slide into the ocean.

Myles, if we could just get rid of that vast area between you and the West Coast you would be closer... Wally, I have given $/checks to the parents on a few occasions. Good solution...

Steve, are you coming out east this year for anything?  And you will get me out there, as soon as I have a healthy off season, I will make plans and come to the game.  I have to take it all in.  Miss you my friend,

Myles, I'll be in Scotland for Inverness and Edinburgh, other than that I'll
be on the West Coast. Kearney is seriously considering the Masters
class at Pleasanton this year. Come on out with him (team Alabama), I'll
put you in the hotel with the pros.

Those are some strict rules of a group referred to as National Association of Ineligible Athletes.
