Upon a quick search, I didn't see a thread like this, so I decided to start one. I believe it is very important for every athlete(or person, for that matter) to set goals for themselves. With that, I'm curious to see what everyone is looking to accomplish this year.
I'll start:
Powerlifting Goals 1)1300lb total in April 2)1400lb total in November 3)Squat 495 4)Bench 350 5)Compete out of state(this will be based on finances..
Highland games 1)Throw the stone over 35 feet 2)Throw the light hammer over 100ft 3)Weight for height(56lb) over 12.5 feet
It'd be nice if everyone could pop back in and update every once in a while.

PL numbers are around 450-460 squat/320-330 bench/500-520 dead.. i compete tomorrow, so we'll get somethin official

open stone.. think ours weighs around 21-22.. i will definitely put up vids if i get them.. i won't have a lot of chances to train directly with anyone that would be able to coach me, so i may be relyin on video coaching a lot this year..
i'm hoping i can just blow all of those numbers away.. my lifting has improved considerably.. both my squat and dead have gone up by 50 or more lbs since i threw those numbers

Lifting goals (Before April of 2010):
Squat and Deadlift over 600 raw(currently at 525 and 545 respectively).
Bench over 350 raw (currently at around 315-320)
Clean over 340 (currently around 300)
Snatch 225 (currently about 185. Rarely do them)
Highland Games goals (for this season)
Open Stone: 43'10''+
Braemar: 35'2''+
Hammers: Stop sucking
WOB: 12' w/ the 56 and 14' with the 42
HW: 25' with the 56 and 35' with the 42
LW: 56'+
Sheaf: 24' (I hate sheaf)
Caber: Turn 'em
Most of my goals have been achieved in practice. It is just a matter of gettin' after it in a games.
Ultimate goal: Get bigger, haha.

God & training willing, by the end of 2009:
OS - 30' [moving to spin or glide]
HWFD - 20'
LWFD - 40' [moving to two spins]
HH - 50'
SHEAF - 22'
WOB - 10' ....this may be a pie in the sky goal but as 10' is the lowest starting point for the games I compete in it's my benchmark

Lifting - Deadlift 600lbs!!!!
Throwing - (I actually have set goals each year now that I have competed. I have goals written down at home for every one of the seven events at the KC games. It helps a LOT with training.)
--- Hammer - 100ft (I actually broke this at the demo earlier but was told not official...lol)
--- Others - Don't have them memorized...but they are permanent display on my home computer.

Great topic!
My goals change depending on whether it's in season or not. So currently my goals are:
90'/70' - LH/HH
50'/25' - LWFD/HWFD
30'/36' - BS/OS
12'/20' - WOB/HVY SHEAF
I've hit these numbers consistently in practice so I know the ability is there, I just need to get over nerves & put'em together in a comp. Cuz we all know it doesn't count unless it's witnesses & recorded somewhere .
200lb+ Snatch
400lb+ Front Squat
For the next 3-4 months I'll have a games atleast every other weekend so pulling heavy is out

I dunno about you guys squatting and deadlifting 400 - 500+ pounds. That's just bluidy brutal.
I pranged up my knee a good one squatting 200 pounds. I squeezed up a lumbar vertebrae as well, and am just healing up. Leg presses with 200+ compress my lumbar vertebrae even worse. Never again. I'm doing wall-ball squats with 30 pounds in each hand and going out for beer and chips afterwards.

I've already accomplished some of what I wanted to do, because I wanted to remove as many barriers to success as possible.
- Left knee ACL recontruction - Had that done December 2006 after going 10 years with no ACL. The knee is finally feeling strong and is no longer a factor.
- Right knee scope - Had this done in March 2007 and had plica strip removed, frayed cartilage repaired, scar tissue removed from ACL, loose bodies removed, and lateral meniscus tear repaired. The knee now hurts a lot less and recovers a lot faster.
- Changed thyroid medications 12/08 - I have had a completely inactive thyroid since I was in my 20's, and I have gained a lot of weight, so I had my doctor switch me from 200mcg synthroid/day to Armour thyroid. The jury is still out on whether this is making a difference in metabolism and energy.
- Had my CPAP machine (sleep apnea) recalibrated and raised the pressure to make sure that I am getting into deep sleep for recovery.
- Nothing I can do about the acid reflux disease...still have to take prilosec 2x/day...but I have altered my diet to try and eliminate flare-ups.
- Finally got an ART/Graston guy in the area - he was a team chiropractor and soft tissue guy for the Redskins - and I have gone through 20 intense ART/Graston sessions + physical therapy in the past 3 months to try and remove some of the scar tissue and increase the range of motion that I have built up through 12 hamstring tears, partially ruptured achilles, many other minor tears, and a general propensity to build more scar tissue than any human on earth. I think that this has really helped a lot.
For me, addressing the things that held me back were even more important than setting new goals, because these things had to be addressed, or else it was all effort in vain. I'm now weighing in at about 255 (at 5' 7-1/2") and I'll be 38 in July.
Here are my (PR's) and goals for this year:
24# Braemar Stone: (31'9") 33' 16# Open Stone: (42') 44' 56 for Distance: (36'1") 38' 28 for Distance: (68'10.5") 70' 22# Hammer: (85') 90' 16# Hammer: (98'5") 110' Caber: Dominate 16# Sheaf: (32') 34' 56# WOB: (13'6") 14'

next weekend will be my second games ever and my first of this season. I am pumped! I do wish I had some one to train with that new what they are doing because I have not improved a whole lot form last year I am sad to say. I do want to thank Everyone on this message board for the help and encouragement. With that said here are my goals for 09. (don't laugh ) OS - 40' BS - 35' LWFD - 55-60' HWFD - 30' WOB - 12' LH - 80' HH - 70' Sheef - 20' Caber - don't look foolish trying to turn it and don't "die" trying not to look foolish.
As for the gym I am a recent convert to the true manner of lifting so the only lift I am even in your ball park is bench sorry I will continue to bust it.
Bench - (current 370) goal - (?) trying not to focus on my chest. Squat - 400+ (not my strong point I do reps better than max) dead - 455+ (Deads and squats have been my focus to this point) militarypress - 225x6-8reps 3x Cleans, snatch, front squat and all that I will continue to do a low weight for fast reps through the season and to get used to those lifts and form. (because I am a wuss )

update: got soooo close to a 1300 total last weekend.. I made a 452 squat and ALMOST got the 467 squat. hit a pretty easy 313 bench, but missed a 331 press.. looks like i need to work some floor presses and band/chain work in very soon.. i nailed a 518 dead.. came off the floor pretty fast, almost like i forgot it was supposed to be over 500lbs.. haha.. i think i coulda got 525-530 on this lift, but i'm happy with that one..
i know I've got a 335 bench in me.. i've done it in the gym multiple times with touch-n-go.. i just need to work the stability and consistancy.. as far as squat, i think i can put another 25lbs on that in the next 3-4 months and i'll also have a 550 DL in that same amount of time..

I simply want to earn my A numbers this year, I say simply but it isn't and I will be MUCH HAPPY after I get them this year.
I have the HH and the WOB consistent and good, but those WFDs are a real bear, but I think I have them figured out..
Regardless, here are my goals this year:
Stone: 30+ Brammar
HWFD: 25'1"
LWFD: 50'1"
WOB: 12'
SHEAF: 26' IN COMP
HH: 70'
LH: 80'
Have a great time and compete as much as I can afford and drive.
Lifting: DEADLIFT 500
Good thread Alaska! There are some Hosses here! Good luck to all!

What's with this 70/80 stuff on the hammers? If you can get 70 with the HH, you should be getting 90+ (I'd say 93) with the LH.

That is one of my issues. I have always only thrown the LH a few feet, 10' tops, farther than my HH. I have realized I was doing two things: 1. I slow down on my last turn prior to release and 2. my release is preceeded by a hitch or pause at the low point where I would try to muscle it. Muscling the hammer=shorter distance (at least for me). I am working on gradual speed to a smooth transition to the release.
I have been working form and speed and videotaping myself and have discovered these two issues which I am working on a lot. My last season PR stats were 65+ HH and 77+ LH. Once I get a newer camcorder I will post some video.

OH!
Those are A numbers? Uhmmm. Ok...can we keep that under wraps for a bit...please...
Actually...ok...tangent here...I look at my numbers from Warrensburg and they don't even make the bottom of the list of the A's.
BS - Nope OS - Not even close HWFD - Over 5' short LtWFD - Over 9' short HH - Second to last LH - Second to last Sheaf - Tied for last
I really do like to be competitive...and I does bother me if some people think I am sandbagging...but seriously...every time I look at the numbers...I am not close to that group.
Thoughts?

In the South, under Southeastern Scottish Athletics Association ( http://www.thessaaa.org - www.thessaaa.org ) rules, if a B wins a Game and hits three of the below four marks, he is then an A. If a B wins a Games but doesn't hit the marks, he can remain a B till he gets the marks. The marks are as follows:
HWFD: 25'
LWFD: 50'
HH: 60'
WOB: 11'.
Last year I had the honor to win my first Games as a B but only hit two of the marks. I tried to move up to the As but was pathetic and the whole time I was throwing knew I didn't belong with those guys yet--I hadn't earned it. So I moved back to the As to earn my spot in the As by hitting the numbers and not just winning a small Game. I really hope to hit the marks this year, whether I win or not, will be awesome!

Sorry, I meant I moved back to the Bs.
I think it is a good system that allows an amatur a great moment of glory by winning and earning his "A card" so to speak and also allows up and coming amateurs a chance to win as there are not a lot of guys who should be As hanging around and winning all the B comps. I would love to earn the opportunity to suck and be last place in the As and have to move up in the rankings by getting better...hopefully this year.

Thanks mountain man for the advice on the hammer tech. I am one who put 70 HH and 80 LH but I was just going off of the last time I threw a HH I only threw it 59' something, I have not prcticed with a HH since. I did not really know what was a good distance for my HH based on how I threw my LH. I will work on getting one to train with but for now I have only a light hammer to try and learn form and technique with and I will accept any addvice. I have not yet tried the spikes in the boots thing yet I am still fairly new to the whole thing. I do need to up grade my LH goal because I hit 82' yesterday so my new goal for this year is:
LH- 90 (no spikes) HH- Get one throw it and get back to you.

As for numbers....
I want to clear 13 in the WOB again this year, and I would SURE like to see 14
I WILL (DAMMIT) shove an open stone over 30 feet.
LWFD 44 feet.
light hammer 86 feet
I gotta say that I am getting really sick of going to competitions and not turning cabers, so I want to turn a caber two or three times in competition this year. I'm afraid that means more squats and box jumps.
.....and make it through the season without screwing up my knee or back something bluidy awful.

I had this training injury a few years back just as I was getting ready to start with HG. Right after the injury, it hurt to even shake someone's hand. The doc at that time had me take 4 (200mg) of ibuprofen every 4-6 hours for a week and to stop training. This allowed the inflamation to go down and then started backing off dosage and increasing time between doses. Started back up with the training and tried to avoid the movements that aggravate the injury. Initially I wore a band on the upper forearm and that helped also. For the most part, this doesn't bother me too much today.

training.. pretty good today.. front squatted 295 for 4.. thought this was decent for not ever training front squat..
throwing practice was meh... only have a 12lb stone to work with and i was only throwin that in the 40-45 range with a standing throw and only gaining a couple feet with a glide.. i think my legs were shot, though, and didn't have as much pop as i'd have liked

After not competing for a year due to knee injury and a long recovery (still not completely up to par) just getting back and throwing without further injury is my only concern. However, I would like to get back to heavy lifting 3-4x week, to include oly and power lifting. Let's say for throwing: open stone, 30 HWFD, 20 LWFD, 40 HH, 55 LW, 70 WOB, 10

Stone/Shot - As close to 50 as I can get LWFD - 70+ HWFD - 35 if I do a comp with it in it. LH - 110+ HH - 90+ WOB - 14 Caber - Start getting them over regularly

My only HG throws were in a Strongman-HG hybrid and the weight events
were a 42# for the crowds sake. So the only true mark I have is:
Braemar 35' 7"
So my goal is
Braemar 40'
Maybe earn the right to throw with the A's, too... We'll see I guess.

Hmm, this is an interesting topic. It is always good to evaluate where you are and where you would like to be, so here is what I would like to throw and lift in 2009.
BS - 37'
OS - 45'
HWFD - 35'
LWFD - 70'
HH - 105'
LH - 130'
Caber - Actually turn one of those stupid things.
16 lb. Sheaf - 34'
56 lb. WOB - 14
Snatch - 225
Clean - 300
Bench - 405
Dead Lift - 500
Squat - 600
If I could acomplish all of that, then this would be my best year ever and I would be really happy.

Update to my goals from earlier:
Stone: 30+ Brammar (got 32+ at Tally)
HWFD: 25'1" (got 28'3" at Tally)
LWFD: 50'1" (got 54'2" at Tally)
WOB: 12' (not yet but "have the height" )
SHEAF: 26' IN COMP (not yet, got 25' at Tally)
HH: 70' (got 67+ in Tally, getting closer)
LH: 80' (threw 82+ on Sunday!!)
Tally was a great game for me and now I have proudly moved into the A Division, knowing now that I earned my spot...my "A Card" so to speak. I will now proceed to get my butt kicked, learn a lot and hopefully get the rest of those numbers by season's end.

To update my update, I had only a few marks left to get for my 2009 goals. Here is my update:
SHEAF: 26' IN COMP (Got 26' in Blairsville, hit the bar at 28')
LH: 80' (Got 86'7" at Blairsville)
The only ones left on my tick-list are:
WOB: 12' (not yet but "have the height" )--same at Blairsville, crap, and I refuse to try and learn to spin just to get 12', lol.
HH: 70' (got 67+ in Tally, getting closer)

HWFD 31 current (23')
LWFD 59 Current (46')

Okay, so it seems like it takes the Games' organizers an eternity to post the distances and scores up here, so I'll do my best to go off of memory...
LWFD- 56ish feet HWFD- verrry bad.. maybe 30 feet.. ripped two calluses off on my second throw, which also happened to be the second event of the day.. Braemar stone(20#)- 34'7" Open Stone(20#)- 36'0" WOB- 11'0"; Had great height, but no arc.. definitely need work Light Hammer- 97'; Heavy Hammer- 75'6"; need more speed and i'm too much on my left side Caber- Turned qualifying caber on my second try.. 0 turns on the competition caber.. 17'9" 105lbs.. i could pick it, but ripping my calluses off earlier in the day made hangin on to it a bit, and i never could quite get it balanced..
It was definitely a fun experience, though.. I got to see Larry Brock flip the challenge caber(dont remember the dimensions, but it was a beast) and we all got to take a throw with the challenge stone that was 116lbs

i'm keeping the hammer on my left side instead of my right side.. i'm a rookie, so it's hard for me to explain.. lol.. basically, the orbit should rotate around the right side of the head instead of staying primarily on the right side and i'm doin the opposite ofthat

ok.. got my results!
20#Open Stone=36'0" 2nd Place 20#Braemar=34'6" 2nd Place 56 WFD=a HORRIBLE 22'4" 6th Place 28 WFD=54'10" 2nd Place 22#Hammer=75'8.5" 4th Place 16#Hammer=96'7" 4th Place 56 WOB=11'0" 6th Place Caber= SUCKED Couldn't turn a 17'9 106lb Caber
I have some pictures at home of me obliterating 11' with the weight for height, but no arc.. I'm thinkin I've got a 12.5' in me like RIGHT now..
On the 56 wfd, I dont even know what to say.. On my second throw, I tore the shit outta my hand in two places. I just COULD not get the spin down. I need more practice fo sho!
I feel that I can add at least a foot on my Braemar and prolly get a couple of feet on my Open within a few weeks of workin on form.
SOOO, let's try these for goals:
20#Open Stone= >38' Braemar= >35.5' 56 WFD= >29' 28 WFD= >58' 22#Hammer= >80' 16#Hammer= >105' 56 WOB= 12.5'

Thanks bud. I know it wasn't small, but there's no reason I couldn't have turned it. I was just "late" on each attempt.
I hope to get a lot more practice on the hammer before next season and have my HH in the 90s and LH in the 110s

Open Stone: 43'10''+
Braemar: 35'2''+
Hammers: Stop sucking
WOB: 12' w/ the 56 and 14' with the 42
HW: 25' with the 56 and 35' with the 42
LW: 56'+
Sheaf: 24' (I hate sheaf)

Most of my goals have been achieved in practice. It is just a matter of gettin' after it in a games.
Ultimate goal: Get bigger, haha.

Update:
Achieved my goal in both stones and the LW. Went 44' in the open at QC for a new lightweight world record as well as 14'6" in the WOB with the 42 (easily had the height at 15'6" but left it out in front 3 times) and 35' in the braemar and 56' in the LW at La Crosse. Hammers suck less. 86' and 63' at QC from a one wind. I also have turned some cabers. So far so good.
