I recently took Hapy's advice and started doing practice with lighter stones and weights.  I was practicing open stone with a 12lbs stone using my usual Drunken Hippo Shuffle (term stolen from Bob Marvin) and just for kicks figured I'd spin like in the videos and...damn that went a lot further....kept working out the kinks and still further...compared it to glide/shuffle with the little stone...nope spin way further.  So naturally I tried a 16, and back to square 1.  Do I keep working on the spin thing or is it just a question of not being strong enough to spin with a real stone...does this post make any sense?

OK now I figured out a better way of explaining/asking it...  With the lighter stone my spin is much better than my glide.  There is little to no difference with a heavier stone. Does this mean it is a question of just continuing to work on that technique, with the potential of the difference coming at the heavier stone as well? Or does that just show I don't have the horsepower to spin and should do more power stuff first?...There, that's better.....

I would assume that you are having some kind of form break when you use
the heavier stone - probably due to you thinking you have to muscle it more
which is causing you to lead with your upper body. With the lighter stone
you are probably more relaxed and not fighting it, which is allowing you to
keep your lower body "in front" of your upper body.

This is just a guess though, without some video to back it up.

Take a drive over this way some free weekend and we'll work on it.

Andy I think you went a little too light - I come from the 10% school, 10 % less, 10% more.  There is more debate about hvy shot light shot training and than you could imagine. The E. Germans and there usual propganda reported that their sub jr.s trained with the jr weight ( not really sure what the kilo's were). Their theroy was the body would make the mechanically changes to accomocdate the heavier weight. Between my Soph and Junior years in College I trained several weeks/months with an 18 lb shot. The results were very good. Hapy's point about relaxing because you have a very light weight is I think the issue. Another ex. hate to use this but my son started throwing the 8 lb shot last summer age 10, he should be using a 6 according to USA T/F the 8 clearly too heavier. About a month ago I bought a 6 lb for him and the technically gains are pretty amazing.  He has at age 11 the basics of the full glide down.

So maybe go a little heavier, ( 17/18)  learn the Scottish spin progression and commit to it.  Break out the hippo shuffle as needed.

Usually it's 14-lb for speed, 16-lb for competition, 18-lb for overtraining.

I just read an article that, for highland games, underweight training is worthless.  The article was by Dan John...
