Thanks, all was going well until I tweaked on a set of 5.  Haven't done much since.  If i can get it healthy I look to put up bigger numbers soon.  If not, I'll shoot cortisone in it and put up bigger numbers soon.

Some cortisone shots contain a local anesthetic.  With it, the shot's no big deal.  Without it, it's agonizing.  I have no idea why they'd use the one without, but my wife's had something like a dozen of them, and has only had the one with the anesthetic on one occasion.

Of course!  You have to realize that is still pretty disappointing for me being 100lbs away from where i once was.  But I'm taking this offseason slow and steady and I think it will pay off.

Also, I had some issues the week prior and realized that I wasn't racking the bar properly.  Fixed that and amazingly the weights felt much better

Craig,

What hand postion are you using for front sqaut?  I have had some issues trying to get back to them after an 8 year break and finally have my strength back to try some more. When I did them in the early 2000's I put my lifting staps on the bar, but that always felt like I was missing some of the benefit from the lift.

I use straps, always have.  It's the only way I can get my elbows high enough to rack it properly.  Once it's racked though, I could pretty much let go, cause it's in there to the point of cutting off my air with too many reps

You can see in all my FS vids how i set up the straps.

I'm not sure it's possible to eat more pizza and ice cream than I do Gene, lol.  I'm the guy that tracked down Chocodiles (chocolate covered twinkies) that were 3000 miles away and made someone obtain them and ship them to me.

Trained with the PL crew again, those guys train funny.  I still think a lot of what they do would be better served doing other things, but i digress.  I'm giving overheads a rest, so i thought why not.  Anyway, did some full range and some two board.  Nothing crazy, as I still try to protect the shoulder.  Heaviest sets were with 320 +160lbs of chains.

Nice pulling Monday.

Boards and the reverse bands are fun.

Nothing like taking an exercise where you are already laying down and then shorten the range of motion. I kid, I kid.

What do you mean? I train with a bunch of powerlifters so I was just wondering what you meant. And by train, I mean I lift with them on squat night only because of all the weird shit they'll do the rest of the time. They seem to do everything for 3 specific lifts, whether it helps you get bull strong or not, if it'll help say a sumo DL lockout, they'll do it. For instance, they can bench a ton but would have issues overhead pressing.

Posted By: C. Smith
Date Posted: 1/28/10 at 8:18am
That's exactly my point, and this obv applies more to geared lifting.  Why would they not overhead press?  Do they honestly think there is no benefit there (not your crew specifically, but PLers in general).  And btw, before my wife set one of her bench WRs she did no flat benching and only overhead pressing for an entire training cycle.

I think a lot of the band work is unnecessary, I think a lot of the board work is unnecessary, etc...

What it has become is not what it intended to be.  It was a basic strength sport with three specific lifts, but you had to be STRONG all over to do well.  Gear has taken that away, unfortunately.

I will say though, that to be successful you have to spend A LOT of time in the gear, cause it's just as much about being able to sew and manipulate fabric as it is about the movements.

Powerlifting is just not athletic, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, but it is what it is.

-------------

Posted By: =Travis=
Date Posted: 1/28/10 at 8:38am

Yeah, I figured your answer would be like that. You seem to have the same opinions as I do about it. As far as powerlifting goes, I'm a much bigger fan of raw powerlifting than the gear. But then that even sparks debate on whether raw includes wraps and monolifts...

Not only has the gear gotten out of hand, but kids nowadays rush to the gear to get a quick fix for their need to hit a big lift. They just want that new PR, but is it really a PR when they can't do it without the gear? I just think it gets out of hand. That's why lifting stones and throwing trees seems more fun to me.

Posted By: thegnome
Date Posted: 1/28/10 at 12:00pm
Speaking of powerlifting and gear I bumped into Jamie Harris a few weeks ago when I was back home.  He looked great, lost a ton of weight and appears really healthy.  He said he's lifting again just for maintaininga nd the fun of it.  I told him he should give throwing a go.

I was in powerlifting when gear started coming into the sport.  It just kept going until you wore a car to lift.  The whole athletic spin is the reason I matriculated to highland games.  It was making powerlifting weird.  And that was why I left bodybuilding.  You look at the canvass bench shirt and wonder how many boy scouts did they rob of tents to make that?  When the dude can't get the bar down to his chest until they put 405 on the bar, and he could not even bench that without a shirt.  You have weird.  C is on target bigtime here.

Here is a link to one good article.  There are lots more available online.  It is a "good pain", but if you are tight and have a lot of adhesions etc it can be quite a lot of good pain.  I have seen this bring tears to people's eyes when working their TFL and IT band.  On the other hand, if you are very loose and supple you might not feel much at all.  As I said, though, you can expect rapid improvements.

Yea, we did several rounds of bloodwork, ekg, etc...  It's not overly common to have the response that I had, which is why the docs were basically guessing, as was I.

I do think that training/overtraining is probably responsible, and there are other criteria that can cause that, that I probably meet as well.  I'm usually really good about knowing my body and when to back down and rest, but I just can't seem to pin down exactly what I do/have done when it happens.

Powerlifting is just not athletic, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, but it is what it is.

you couldnt be more right craig. damn dude you and i think alike, ive posted on powerlifting watch about what a circus the sport is.

I saw above the discussion about the loss of muscle control and/or the total body lock up.  I was curious, is there any possible way that you might have hit your head.  I have seen several instances where a few days after an athlete gets a concussion or some sort of head trama they can have a total body lock.  They have difficulty gripping and moving.  It sounded similar but If you have not had any type of head injury I am way off.  Just curious.

Nope, no head injury Wes.  My blood work indicated really high CPK levels.

That is crazy then.  Does it happen during lifts or is it after you get done.

When I get done it seems.  I've only had the full body lock once, and basically woke up in the middle of the night and couldnt move.  Sucked.

There's a couple of funny rejoinders there, but I'm going to leave it alone.

I'm sorry to stick my nose in here but did they have you see a neurologist?  I think I'm getting that although there was only one big "incident" there are lesser symptoms that happen more frequently.  Am I right?  I know there is some thing with elevated CPK levels and muscle aches, but I'm not an MD.  A neuro person might be your best bet if this is a continuing concern. OK, I'll mind my own business now.

Yea, I had a ton of tests done.  I thinking (read: hoping) that my symptoms are a result of some nutritional/vitamin/mineral/water imbalance.

I upped my water intake today , which has recently been poor by any standards, and noted an improvement (and also have been using 2-3g of vitC per day).  Not giving the credit there yet, but fingers are crossed.

Did they check for Lupus? Lupus has those types of symptoms.

I hope its nothing serious.

It was last June, and like i said be did multiple rounds of blood work, testing, etc...

My understanding for Lupus diagnosis, with a quick google search, is that you have to meet certain criteria, a checklist if you will:

Which I don't at all.

Some of the best athletes in the world in many sports have trouble with cramping.  This problem has not gotten worse in almost a year and has only shown up a couple of times.  I think Gene is on target, but Craig's body does not absorb or keep the balance needed at times.  Knowing this capability of this athlete, and the way this has not progressed, I just don't see this as a serious body function, just might be a way his body handles minerals.  More beer?

I have always pulled sumo, mostly because my back could never take pulling conventional.  Recently my back has been feeling pretty damn good compared to how it used to be, so I decided to try to pull conventional.  Also, I feel like my sumo was stuck and maybe I wasn't getting the most out of the lift.

The lifts felt great and 605 was soooooooooooo easy, despite being after work sets.  I basically just wanted to add a plate and see how it would feel.

Hopefully my back will still like me tomorrow, and I'll probably alternate pulling sessions between conventional and sumo.  I hope to hit a decent # in my new conventional stance here pretty soon, after I get used to it.
