Thanks Threau Fay! I try to be like you

Throws...WITH TROB!

Stone
Braemar x4 best of 45'
Glide x5 best of 47' Ugh, legs felt like junk after my lift yesterday, no pop.

HWFD x8 best of 37', nothing at the finish, I'll be fine though

LWFD (legit 28#) x5 best of 75' Solid.

Heavy Hammer (TROB just found one in his garage...score!) x5 best of 96' Awesome!

Light Hammer x3 best of 116' My middle finger on my right hand has a lot of dull pain when I throw hammers and I have no idea what it is. Doesn't hurt to flex my fingers just a dull pain. Hoping it holds off for Saturday. Feeling positive about this weekend!

Springfield Protectworth Games

Braemar (24.5#)- 36'4 UGLY stone. Waddell had fun laughing at us all trying to throw it. Looked like a melted rubix cube and there was literally no good spot on it. Pretty happy here considering the weight and shape

OStone (16.5#)- 47'8 another odd stone, shaped like a tooth. Just didn't have the best push on it either but ok with this nonetheless.

HWFD- 36'4, 38'2 in extras. Used the polanik and I never had a good release in my first 3. Took one extra and was happy with my 38's. Needed to save some for the rest of the day

LWFD- 70'8, 75'2 in extras. Really pleased with this. My first throw was 63' and I was like "the f**k..." so I manned up. Finally hit a good one on my 2nd extra throw. Very happy to be over 75' again.

Heavy Hammer- 95'2 really happy. All 3 throws over 90' finally in a groove with this event. No extras allowed because it was the New England Hammer Championships

Light Hammer- 109'10. No rhythm at all. Kept missing all my low points, high points, blah. Ever since my HH rhythm has improved it's been difficult to transition. I need to drill that better.

Caber 1:00 with a BIG stick. I think it was 19' ,125+ pounds, little taper. I took 5 caber throws in total because the qualifying caber became the comp caber so my first turn didn't count. Then that caber broke (FML) and my 12:00 with that caber on my second turn didn't count. SO THEN we moved to what was to be the comp caber and I turned it first try, only one to turn it. I feel like this event is coming along for me.

Sheaf (16#)..... Bombed out. Oddly enough before the games started I acquired a sheaf in an act of random sheaf kindness so I think this will be my focus for the second half of my season. This just really pissed me off but it happens once and a while I guess

WOB- 15' Went to 16'2 for a PR and had the height but alas it eluded me. My goal for the end of this year is 16'6 with pulls at 17' on more than one occasion. I am making the right steps.

Overall a pretty good games. Evidently more practice is needed and I need to start stepping it up. I have a 10 day vacation coming up where I am going to Iowa with my gf's family. Not sure how I am going to train while there but I am going to try and make it work. Just have to keep spirits high!

Nice games, Jeff -- your overall game is coming along very nicely, and at a quick pace.

Whereabouts in Iowa are you headed?  You might holler at Nathan Burchett, as he lives there now.  He's a great thrower and an even better man.

We are headed all over! Haha my girlfriends parents are doing a bicycle ride across Iowa so we are starting in Sioux City and ending at the Mississippi around Clinton. My plan is to bring some things with me to train with. I might see if I can contact the Burchett's any way and see if getting a throw in with them is possible. Thanks Dan!

Push Day

Warm Up

Back Squat

135x8, 185x8, 225x8, 275x8, 315x8 holy winded fat boy, Batman

DB Bench

70sx8, 80sx8, 90sx8, 100sx8 this was easy but didn't want to push the elbow. Feels good

Split Squat

65x5, 85x5, 95x5

Strict Press

95x5, 135x5, 155x5

Wow, haven't lifted this much volume since off season. I have about a month until my next games and a 10 day vacation where lifting is out of the question and possibly throwing as well. The plan was to do some decent volume today and tomorrow and then maybe it will hold me over until I get back. I guess we will see. Either way, it was nice to see I still had that kind of endurance, 315x8 was like super awesome for me back in November so I am hoping this translates into big lifts this off season.

Pull day tomorrow is gonna be rough.

Throws

After last weeks odd sheaf happenings (Getting a free sheaf bag and then bombing out at sheaf) I decided I needed to actually practice sheaf

I know...shocker

Went to TROB's for some front yard Sheaf-hem

x10-20 pulls at a branch that in the middle was 25'. Short end 22' and tall end nearing 30'. I got over twice, once in the middle once on the short end. But I made some strides in my rhythm and I feel like I can make a lot of progress here.

Then for fun, WOB x10ish pulls. Cleared TROB's 14'6 branch a bunch and my legs are now toasted.

Well it's been about 2 weeks since my last post. Went on a trip to Iowa with my girlfriend and her family. To make a long story short, the parents were riding their bikes across Iowa (RAGBRAI to those Iowan's who know what this madness is) in 7 days. I was in charge of setting up camp and driving the RV. So essentially, training came to a halt.

I was able to get about 3 days of training in but minimal at best. I found a rock to throw, my guess is it was about 14 pounds maybe more. I threw that two different days, best of around 52' each session took about 30 throws. I also did 30 meter sprints, push ups, core, and stretching. That was about it. Today I was able to get back into the gym.

7/30/12

Warm Up

Hang Clean

135x5, 185x3, 225x3, 245x1, 265x1, 275x1 Heavy feeling but I was happy with the numbers!

Squat

135x8, 185x5, 225x5, 275x3, 315x2, 365x1, 365x1, 365x1 Well 365 was super heavy feeling so I did it for 3 sets of 1. More speed work in the coming weeks just wanted to test my legs out

Bench

135x8, 135x8, 225x5, 275x5, 295x3, 315x3, 335x1

DB Bent over Rows

3x8 @ 100s, 115s, 125s

Paloff Press

3x10

I am going to be sore. Throws tomorrow I hope!

Throws

Been away for work the past three days at Sugarloaf for training. Got a workout in just machines to get the blood flow. Was excited to get out and throw today.

Ostone
Stands x5 best of 46'
Glide x7 best of 49' surprised by how good this felt. My legs were all over the place but I felt good pushes on the stone

HWFD x10 UGLY best of 37'-38' It has been maybe 3 weeks since I practiced this. It showed! Got it back by the end but my thumb was trashed.

Sheaf x10 took a lot of good pulls and I think I found a good rhythm/position and kept getting the bag higher and higher. I have no idea of the height but it looked solid.

Perhaps throws tomorrow with TROB (I am hoping hammers)

Throws

LWFD (26.5#, 16")
Stands x3
1 spins x3
Fulls x8 best of 79' this was sloppy and choppy at first but put it together for a good series

Heavy Hammer
1 wind x1
2 winds x1
3 winds x8 best of 95'-96' Everything felt good but I was just missing that OOMPHF! at the end. I really think 100' is in the cards

Sheaf x12-15 once again just taking pulls in the field but I really feel more and more comfortable with this every time I practice it. They looked really high and directly behind me so that is good! Lifts tomorrow and a pre games throw Thursday.

Recovery: Sam Adams Coastal Wheat and Discus Qualifying rounds...boosh

Cape Cod Games

Stupid Stone (65ish#)- 16'+ 2nd
LWFD- 70'1, 74'2 (extras) 1st
HH- 91'+ 1st
LH- 117'+, 119'+ (extras) 1st and two PRs
Caber- 12, 11:55, 12 2nd
Sheaf (16#)- 30' 2nd PR!!
WOB- 15' 1st

Overall 1st.

Was not expecting to have a terrific games as I have been working a lot, away a lot, and just not 100%. However I was very happy with today! No regular stones today (bummed) so LWFD felt like it happened right away. With no HWFD I felt like I could go 100 MPH and get away with it and I got out of position a bunch. Still had good pulls but was leaning away from my throws...need to work on this.

Heavy Hammer had a thick PVC and I whined about it so it got in my head a little but still managed over 91+ so that's good. Didn't take any extras because I wanted a good LH day...and it worked! First throw was 117'+ and the rest of the throws were no lower than 112' so I am pleased. 119' was huge and I had my fingers crossed for 120' but no dice. Soooooon

Caber was an easy stick, bit of a 12:00 shoot out. Sheaf was interesting too. After bombing out my last games I acquired a fork and sheaf through the kindness of Al Dargie, TROB, and Denise Houseman and practiced a lot. I made all of my heights on my 3rd attempt (which was stupid) but It was great to finally crack into the 30's. Hit the bar at 33' which is promising and I just need more practice and consistency.

And WOB is WOB. Went for 16'3, hit the top of the bar, no give. Another day! Overall pumped and excited for Maine Games this up coming weekend!!

Hahaha I wish I looked like that...even the green

8/15/12

Throws with TROB

OStone
Stand x6 best of 45'-46' with my stone
Step in TROB's rock Glides x6 best of 45'-46' ugh could not throw this thing.

HWFD x6 best of 39' felt good but slow

LWFD (26.5 #, 16") x6 best of 75' booooo

Heavy Hammer x6 best of 100' Big time throw for me at practice. Yanked my back a little so I called it.

Overall a good day. I forgot my cleats so I felt off just throwing in cross trainers but it worked. Stone needs to get pumped up for this weekend. I have 2 hard days of work the next 2 days which I am not thrilled about so lots of food, water, and recovery for Maine this weekend.

Maine Highland Games

Ostone (16#)- 49'4 2nd
HWFD- 39'4 1st
LWFD- 69'10, 75'3 (extras) 1st
HH- 95'6 1st
LH- 114'2 1st
Caber (19', 100#) 10:00 5th ICK
Sheaf (16#) 31' PR 2nd
WOB- 15' 1st

Overall 1st in a really tough and dense group. I had a solid day all day and I am not unhappy with any performance with the slight exception of caber. It was a totally turn-able stick but I took it for granted and blew my chance at a 12. Pumped about another sheaf PR in recent weeks and I feel like with the right pull 33' is possible this year. Everything else was sweet and on a highlight I had the best HWFD throw of all 56# throwers including Pros. Makes a man feel good.

Had a blast throwing against everyone and props to TROB on a big third place finish behind Bill Waddell and myself. Bill made a massive come back during caber and sheaf and had a great day all around. Shout out to Mike Wilder for a beastly stone almost breaking 50' and taking the win there. I love throwing at Maine and I want to continue to do so!

Long ass work week this week then Quechee games Saturday. I hope to just survive those games haha

No real training this week. I worked 41 hours in 3 days and today, the one day I have off, my shoulder was hurting.

I hurt it throwing a monster caber Saturday as a challenge and it pulled a little. Hurts under my collarbone and in my trap area. I am massaging the hell out of it but still hurts and I don't wanna injure it more with Quechee Games this weekend. Any of you guys out there had this pain? It is weird dull achey pain not sharp or anything.

Quechee Highland Games

Braemar (23#)- 38'8
OStone (16#)- 49'4, 49'8 extras
HWFD- 36'6
LWFD- 71'6
Caber 11:55
Sheaf (16#)- 27'10
WOB- 15'

Overall first and a great day considering. MY shoulder/collarbone/trap area is in a lot of dull pain and I don't know why. Stones didn't hurt and I felt like I was gonna PR but no dice. HWFD hurt a little but I was more all over the place and didn't want extras. LWFD angered me. I opened with 71'6 and then followed with a 75'9 foul, barely. Then I got in my own head. In extras I again went big at 76'4 to tie a PR but NOOO I fouled it too. Need to fix this.

My shoulder held up until WOB and then it hurt really bad. I have 4 weeks until Loon so I plan on taking it easy to heal up and doing what I can to prepare for it. I hate all these little injuries they suck so bad!!

Big thanks to Ken Gustavsen and his crew for putting on a great games and thanks to all the guys I threw with especially Bill Waddell who continues to push me and himself further. Props to Doc Rob M for competing under loads of pain and a torn to sh*t callus.

Wow, it has been a while since I have gotten any training done but I managed to get into the gym today which was great.

8/30/12

Warm Up

Squat for speed

135x5, 185x5, 225x3, 225x3, 225x3, 275x3, 275x3

OH Press

2x5 @ 95

Lat Pull Downs

3x8

Box Jumps from sitting position

4x5 @ 24" box

Assorted Upper body movements

So my legs felt slow but it was nice to get under some weight again. My shoulder/collarbone/trap pain was not happy with the upper body things I was doing though. I still have no idea what the issue is and I cant get an appointment with an orthopedic doctor. I am afraid it is my SC (sternoclavicular) joint and that it is sprained. This would take a while to heal and would drastically limit my training.

Either way I have about 3 or so weeks until Loon and if I can get a few training days in here and there I will be happy. But, my number one priority is being pain free.

I hate stupid pain. The kind that is enough to make you think you can keep playing but continues to remind you that your hurt for a long time. Grumble grumble grumble

Get healthy...dammit.
