An All Blacks connection to Highland Games.
Ben Franks, one of the 2011 World Cup winning players competed in the Caber and other heavy events at the November 2011 Hororata Highland Games, near Christchurch, New Zealand as part of the charity fundraising for the recent devastating earthquakes in that area. |

Was trolling around the message board while I'm goofing off and ran across this post!! Ben did indeed compete in the Hororata Games, I am the one who has been training him for rugby for the last 2 years and just missed the competition while I was coming to NZ to train him for the start of off season!!! I hooked him up with Pat Hellier while he was in Auckland for World Cup and they went out a couple times and threw. He got interested in the games when I was there working training camp for the Rugby Super 15 team he plays for and I was throwing and talked to him and his brother Owen who I train also. Watch out Ben tells me that when Rugby is over the Highland Games are next on his list!!!! He's a powerful and strong dude that according to Pat caught on pretty quick.

I have been meaning to write into the thread for a week but haven't had a chance. In the last two years, I have become obsessed with watching the Rugby Sevens series. I am mid way through watching the Hong Kong Cup from this past weekend. I am very glad NBC Sport Channel (formerly Versus) is carrying it. Big Ed, if you are training the rugby players, you sir are a bad ass. I consider rugby players to be the ideal athlete. Not only are they really big strong guys but they run as much and as far as soccer players. Wow. So impressive! Good on ya.
If I had this life to do over, I would definitely have done track and field and rugby.

Hey Big Ed, any chance you can work your magic on the USA Sevens team? They are doing better but still have a LONG way to go before Brazil 2016. I finish watching the Scotland 7s tomorrow, saved it all week.

Sweet Todd..thanks for the heads up. I'll be watching. Have 1 on the AB's I train and 3 on Aussie I work with in off season.....
It amazes me Mountain Man...I've been working with the Franks brothers and actually this year began working with a couple Aussie 7's players but even with a Kiwi as CEO of USA Rugby can't get a return call....you'd be amazed or really sickened to learn the "strength training" of USA Rugby!!!

Worse Todd!!! Especially when you consider the explosive and powerful nature of the sport. This is with mainly the 15's don't know much about 7's training but watching them and knowing the atmosphere within USA Rugby can't imagine it's much better.

Big Ed, I just watched the England 7s, you could not have been more right about the USA's fitness and strength problems. Even the commentator remarked how they lost their final simply because of fitness, or lack thereof.
Frustrating to want to buy an All Blacks shirt instead of an Eagles one..... |

You are spot on Robin on the lack of power, strength and fitness on the USA squad and hell that's in 7's....just look at the All Blacks, South Africa, Argentina, or Wallabies for that matter or any of the Island boys..the size of their legs, ass, traps and even arms.....it's a joke what most of the US players look like. I've seen and talked to one of our best players in Todd Clever and seen some of the training he does....I don't care how fast you can move your feet in a pattern or flail your arms holding a rope what are you going to do in that ruck or on that tackle???
I've got my Eagles jersey but have several All Blacks jerseys and others!! Got a nice gift from Ben Franks in an autographed All Blacks jersey from World Cup and a ball.....got a few Wallabies jerseys as a close friend of mine is their strength and conditioning coach.
