I know that Brad Gillingham advocates front squatting heavy with no belt...but how about deadlifting? I have recently upped my belted dead pr by 40 pounds - and did it with no belt. Am I being really risky? It felt easy and I had no pain or soreness the next day.

How much more can someone usually add to their max with a powerlifting belt? What about in full lifting gear?

I used to deadlift heavy and beltless (and stiff-legged) all the time... never had a problem with my back...

I do the Gillingham dead and front squat routine.you should not use belt for the front squats at all in this routine. The pupose of the front squat routine is to condition your body for the dead routine.  as for deads I say just use it for your max lift. Just use it for safty not added power. I notice that if I dont use a belt at all during this program that when I do use my belt when I go for a max at the end, it is realy uncomfortable. hope that helps.

Done deadlifts for over 20 years and haven't used a belt in last 15 or so.

Belts tend to make me cramp more actually.

I love the feel and look of leather.  I was going to order some matching chaps for squat day.

I can't seem to hit a good deadlift position with a leather belt. A Rehband belt is more comfortable though, and provides warmth and some compression without getting in the way.

I Dont train with a belt for anything anymore, But if I remember dosnt the belt loosen up in the back when you squat down.
