Ancient Greek Pentathlon        Highland Pentathlon

Long Jump                         =    Standing Long Jump
Javelin                               =     Caber or Hammer
Discus                                =    Light Weight for Distance
Stadion Race (190m)         =    190m race
Wrestling                           =    Maide Liesg

Awards would be Thistle and T-shirts for participants.  Thinking about this as an event in my area.  Thoughts?

Was asked to come up with an event for our area that is more than just a 5K.  Thought I could mix in a bit of Scottish style gaming and ride the good turn out we had at the Gaylord Highland Games.

It needs to be simple and easy to grasp with a low thresh hold for people hurting themselves.  The 'lazy stick' seemed like an appropriate sub for wrestling.  I have some smaller cabers to sub for the javelin.

Nothing is set in stone (Ha!  see what I did there?).

I respectfully disagree about running.

In Scotland, a "Highland Games" not only includes the "heavy athletics", which is what we do, but also "light athletics".  If you look at games results from there, you will see some running events--in looking at 2012 results, they offer distances up to 3200 m--and jumping events (high jump, long jump, triple jump, even pole vault).  Sometimes there are cycling events and tug of war as well, along with piping and dancing.  We tend to use "Highland Games" interchangeably for "heavy athletics", but it's not the case everywhere.

Of course, the heavy athletics athletes don't do the light athletics, and vice versa, from what I see in a cursory overview of some 2012 results posted (http://www.shga.co.uk/).  But to make a friendly and reasonably safe competition for relative novices and up, I suggest long jump, 200 m (instead of 190 m), light hammer, light weight for distance (or could do heavy on this one).  Using Maide Liesg instead of wresting for the last event is a tough one since I've never seen women perform it (and I only saw pictures of men doing it online when I looked it up last night--no resources to view video).  If not Maide Liesg for women (to have an inclusive offering), I'm stumped on a suitable 5th event.  Maybe tug of war, perhaps one-on-one same gender, or mixed double team.
