5/8 - took most of this week off except for hockey on Thursday.

Shot put meet (Burlington International) - 38' 2"

Not too impressed, though I felt much more in control and balanced, just no
"push" at the front. The circle had like 1/2" of standing water in it, so
maybe I was tentative a little bit, anyhow, I actually felt pretty good, the shot
just wasnt flying.

OK - now 2 weeks to the highlander - got to get my open stone and caber
back up to par.

5/10

Jump 1/4 Squats - (try to catch just a little air with each rep) 135x10,
185x5x3, 205x5x2

I tried to do a version of a standing incline press that Doc Bill told me
about - Neider press. Where you incline press then pull the bar back to
the rack position. This was way more difficult than I thought - Got 45 x
10, and 135x2x5

60lb dumbbell swings x10x5 (only with my left arm though - tried it with
my right, and my shoulder barked at me)

Atlas stone loads onto 50" platform - 205x2x3, 260x1 (I missed 260 last
time I did these, so I am very pleased, it came up off the ground pretty
easy this time.)

Go Habs Go!

caber throws - did you know that taking 2 years off of the games means
you have to start from zero? took 10 throws with "little crooked" 19ft and
about 85lb, with a big crook in the middle. No turns, but at least my pick
is pretty solid. This Saturday is going to suck.

28lb wfd 1 spinx10 (45ft)
28lb wfd 2 spin x10 (55ft)

WFD was a bit more solid than it has been, making some progress here I
think.

248lb - so should be no problem making middleweight class - having a
bowl of ice cream and Oreos...

5/22 Highlander at Killington, VT

Open Stone... Had all sorts of trouble here - 2 fouls, so I braemared the
last one. then AD allowed 4 attempts, so fouled the 4th one also. Yuck -
35'

Keg toss - this was actually a lot of fun and timing was way better than
with my LWFD which this is very similar to. Ended up with about 43' I
think. Hopefully this means my LWFD will start coming around.

Log press - I knew I was going to suck at this, made 140lb starter, 170lb
no problem, but missed on 200lb. Looked like too big of a jump, oh well.

Caber -Only had a smaller caber, which ended up breaking in the 2nd
round. Felt nice to get some good pulls on a caber I could manhandle.
Then Mike brings out this massive beast, 20' long and 150+. I think I got
like 40 degrees on it, but honestly I was happy to have a good pick and a
solid pull.

WOB - Made 12' for the first time in over 2 years. Very satisfied with this.
I hit the bar with the handle at 13' so I think I am good for 12' 6.

Husafell - made the mistake of trying to carry the HW stone - was able to
lap it but not get it up to my chest to walk, switched over to the lighter
MW stone, but was gassed pretty good I think, and only managed about
67' before I felt like I was going to pass out from lack of oxygen. Will
have to keep working on these stone carries and Atlas stone picks.

Very satisfied for my first real competition, but definitely some
weaknesses I need to work on were apparent as well.

Don't let him full you, Hapy looked strong and smooth.  As long as he's patient he's gonna be back in force.  I think throwing the 42 in a while will help.

took some time off with wife out of town, I have to do all the chores - hard
to find time to get workout in (just an excuse)

Anyhow, decided to try a morning workout instead of my usual post-work
workout to see if I could fit into the schedule better.

Hang cleans 135lb x10
High Pulls 225lb x2x5
Bent over rows 315x3x3
Deadlift 365lbx2x2, 415lb x1

OK my first "real" games back yesterday.

Things held together fairly well, with some serious rust to shake off, but I
am fairly happy with my performances - definitely something I can build
on.

Braemar - 31'
Openstone - 36' broke out the full spin here, and felt pretty good -
couldn't figure out the stone though, and was unable to get much on it.
(others had just as much trouble as me, so...)
HWFD - pretty good pacing, but had some problems with release points -
27' - think I will be good for 30+ if I can keep the ball down.
LWFD - This is the event now giving me the most trouble with my
shoulder - had a couple fouls, still need to figure this one out - 53'
Heavy Hammer - Need more practice here - 68'
Light Hammer - see above - 87'
Caber - caber was a bit small for our class - I had a 12:15 on the first
attempt, and kind of lost interest after that. Still need some work on
consistency and speed.
Sheaf - 21'6, not so bad for me, but wasn't getting a strong flick - had
the height for 23'6 but couldn't dial in the accuracy.
WOB - 11'6 - just missed 12'6 twice - would have rolled over I think with
a fixed bar

Not too sore today, which is awesome.

Gosh - 6/24 already - 12 days since my last real workout.

Work has been killer, plus I hurt my leg (bad road rash, nothing
structural, which prevented me from doing some stuff). I did stay busy
physically, but mostly just playing hockey, and a little softball.

Feels like every day I can get in some throwing around here its pouring
rain.

Anyhow back on the saddle:

45 minutes hard stationary recumbent biking tonight since I skipped
hockey had to do some cardio.

Core Twisters 205x12x2
Neider Press with dumbbells 50x5x5
Blob Lift 25lb in each hand Upright rowed 5x5
Atlas Stone loads 205x5

6/25 throwing - Yay sunshine!

16lb standing x3
23lb standing x10
16lb full rotation x10
16lb scottish style x6
16lb full rotation x3
56lb WFD x10
22lb hammer x10

Finally had a bit of a breakthrough with the full rotation on the open
stone. I just REALLY concentrated on sweeping my plant (left leg) so I end
up in a much more open position, and bam - 5ft improvement. Still
having some trouble with the stone coming off my hand with the full
rotation, but I tried putting it a bit deeper in my palm, and even though it
felt weird, that problem mostly went away, and I didn't lose much
distance. Being back over 40' is a sweet feeling - Now I just need to add
back all the other crap in that I am not doing right.

7/4 4th of July "Demo" games in Warren, VT.

We threw 3 stones -
23lb ugly handled Braemar - 30'+
Open Stone 38'9 (I think this is my best throw with full rotation, so far)
109lb VT stone - 9'9 - had a nice one over 10' maybe 11', but couldn't
hold up at the trig.

HWFD - 26' - ugh - very poor here, bad technique and footwork.

Caber - got 60 degrees on "Big crooked" needed a bit more pop, but the
sun and heat was sucking all my energy.

WOB - 11'6 before Carlton broke the strap holding the apparatus, it was
getting late, so I called it instead of setting it back up.

Thanks guys. its good to be back throwing, even if I am resigned to the fact
that my marks are never going to be what they were.

Today I joined Andrew Gillie up at his campsite for some stone lifting. I
didn't keep track of how many or what weight I did, but had a nice lather
going in the 100 degree heat, and had some nice pulls with a couple
300lbers... A nice dip in Lake Champlain cooled me down pretty well also.

Wow just saw the event and competitor lineup for Glasgowlands. I need to
bring my A game - time to actually work on Hammers or I am going to be
left in the dust.

7/10

Neider Press - 135x10 155x5x2

Jump Squats - 235x10x3

Atlas Stone loads - 205x5x2 260x3

I tried to do a "cycle" of stone loads - loading the stone and then bringing
it to the floor and then grabbing the big stone and loading it as fast as I
could like in a strongman competition. This is very hard. I found I hold
my breath too much, and by the time I grab the bigger stone I am about
to faint. Does not bode well for the Harpoon Strongman show I am doing
in a couple weeks. I will be very slow. Anyone have suggestions on
breathing techniques here?

Finished off with some blob holds for time - 25lb dumbbells that I grab
from the top in each hand for 60 seconds - 3 sets.

yep, the one in 2 weeks is during the New England BBQ championships, and
then there is another one in the fall for their Octoberfest celebration. This is
at the brewery in Windsor, VT

Matt, if you want in, let me know I am sure we can fit you in.

Mark Currier is the organizer for both events.

I believe Mark said that for the BBQ event, it will be Overhead lever press for
reps, some kind of medly with a drag and/or duckwalk, 15" deadlift max
weight, and then atlas stones, he had mentioned a 2" 150lb pair of
dumbbells deadlift for max reps also, but rumor has it he cancelled that one.

the Octoberfest one has all kegs in every event. He has brought some
different apparatus and things to try, but usually has a press, a deadlift, a
grip event, and then we load kegs similar to Atlas stones, all ending with a
truly nasty 400+lb keg filled with concrete and rebar chunks.
