friggin hot. I know us New Englanders shouldn't complain about the heat - believe me, I would much rather be here than in Texas, but we're just not acclimitized. 12lb Hammer x10 (around 100ft) 22lb hammer x20 (best around 75ft) that's about all my shoulder could stand. Now I will go soak in the mountain stream before I get brain damaged from heat stroke. |

7/17 - Glasgowlands games
OS - 38' badly cutting myself off here with my left foot - have to be more aggressive about sweeping this or I am going to have to go back to the South African. LWFD - lots of troubles here. Fouled my first two throws and put a safety out there 51' Hammers - these are now starting to really hurt my shoulder, I hit the stretch in the back when you are just about to pull it down and my shoulder cracks and I instinctively pull in, so all my throws were basically just a pull from the bottom and release. 66' HH, 81' LH I am thinking about reversing my direction (releasing over the right shoulder) and see how that goes. Anyone know anyone who has successfully done this? Caber - turned it WOB - best event of the day for me. Cleared 12' easily and hit the bar at 13' on all 3 tosses. Definitely the best tossing I have done with my offhand ever. I think those jump squats are paying off a little bit here. This week is prep week for the strongman on Saturday... going to work on 15" deadlift and sled drags for some technique. |

Nice job on the wob Hapy.
I am by no means an expert and I am not saying it won't work for you, but I have tried to release it as a lefty. I found it to be much more difficult to due my lack of ROM b/c of my shoulder injury/surgery. just curious, but what is the injury to the shoulder and what kind of ROM do you have? |

I had a labral repair where only about 10% of the tissue was able to be
saved. Also had to have the biceps tendon reattached (since it was attached to the part of the labrum which had to be debrided.) I also have a subluxion of the SC joint which causes my clavicle to shift where it is attached to the sternum. It is undetermined if the two issues are related or not. My ROM is actually fairly normal, in fact most of the PT and trainers I have worked with have told me that ROM is better than normal, possibly too much. The biggest pain I get is when I am decelerating a weight from overhead. (like when you are catching a push press) Pulling the hammer from its high point back down to low causes the same pain. |

7/19 - strongman training with Amy and Carlton...
Stones - bunch of lifts and even some presses with various atlas and field stones. Up to 300lb+... did a series of 5 stones 170 200 220 240 250 Missed the 240 atlas stone in that series - just too damn slippery. 16" deadlift - worked my way up to 485 for a fail, backed down to 465 and it came up pretty good. Had to switch to reverse grip, too many stone lifts I think. Sled drag... not really an exercise, but I wanted to test it out a bit to see how its going to feel Saturday. |

I think it worth pointing out that that 240 would only be slippery without tacky (as stones should be lifted).

Yeah for sure Wayne. Carlton keeps his outside, and this one is fairly big diameter, and super slick.
Here is video of the series: Stone training |

I should add that Carlton went on to not only pick up all the same stones as
I did, but pressed them all as well (except the 240 Atlas) |

7/21
Safety Squats with 2 second pause at bottom - 135x10, 225x5, 225x5, 275x3 Power clean and press - 135x10, 185x0, 185x0, 185x1 Finished up with more cleans 205x5, 225x0, 225x0, 225x1 Atlas Stone loads - 205x5 Waiter Hold 60lb dumbbell 30 seconds x5 on each side Realized today how pathetic and weak my overhead is getting. Even though it hurts, I absolutely need to find a way to keep working it without damaging my shoulder. Going to try adding these waiter holds over the next few weeks to see if I can improve stabilization. Funny to get mad enough at missing 185 on the OHP 2 times that I could get it on the third, only to do the same with the Power Cleans with 225. OK hockey tomorrow night, and then I am as ready as I ever will be for Harpoon on Saturday. |

7/24 - Harpoon Strongman
1st event was yolk and frame carry medly - 500lb yolk carry about 40 ft, and then turn around and carry it back, then pick up 500lb frame carry (like farmer's walk, except a little easier maybe). I got the yolk the full distance, but only got 40ft on the frame carry. 2nd event clean and press for reps with 225lb. Got the clean rather easy, but shoulder did not allow me to get any presses in. 3rd event - 15" deadlift - 440lb, 500lb, and tried 530lb and failed on 3rd attempt. 4th event - medley again... 305lb duckwalk 40ft down and back, then sled drag - I think sled was 300lb also, not sure. This event sucked but I finished them both, and was the closest I have ever been to puking after doing something, but didn't. 5th event was atlas stones, and I was totally gassed. Got the first stone 255lb but could not get the 275lb off the ground. Overall, some of the toughest stuff I have ever done, but am actually fairly happy with my results. kind of disappointed I couldnt finish off the frame carry, and if I was a little fresher I think I could have gotten the 275lb stone up. Now back to highland games training - still have goals this year of 40' stone, 30' HWFD, 60' LWFD and 13' WOB. |

LWFD - Nice and easy about 15 tosses maybe out to about 57-58' on the best of them. Hammer swings with Carlton's "Frankenhammer" which consists of a metal pipe with two old brake rotors. worked on the reverse swing (release over right shoulder) The winds seemed "ok" but had a lot of trouble getting anything on the pull. On the good side, no shoulder pain with this method so far... will keep working on it. |

Waiter holds for 30 sec - 25lb dumbbell x2, 60lb dumbbell x2 per side 25lb "blob" lifts (just grabbing 25lb hex bell by the end) x20 stiff legged deadlift off 3" platform - 185x5x5 did these very explosively 1/4 squats - 245x10x3 - almost a jump squat inclined bench - 60lb dumbbells x5x5 Atlas Stone loads - 205lb x5 bunch of shoulder work with tubes and bands |

well, using the word great might be a bit much. it was a good effort for
sure though. I was so exhausted on Saturday night and Sunday. Had some bumps, bruises and scrapes, but overall I recovered a lot better than I expected to. Being able to get a couple of "low effort" workouts this week, plus some softball and hockey must mean I can't feel too badly. Have some nice bruises on my legs from where I banged the T-bar of the duckwalk. A nice contusion on my back/lower neck area where I scraped the crap out of it carrying the yoke, and a blister or two on my hands is all the damage I did to myself. Definitely had a lot of fun and will continue to work on these events. I appreciate the training a lot more though. I got creamed by some inexperience with some of the events and a general lack of pulling power. Getting beat in the deadlift by 250lb was a humbling experience. |

For the first time you did do great. Like anything experience helps a lot. Hopefully we'll go at it during Harpoon's Octoberfest. |

Are you doing all the stone work for something in particular like a contest or just for fun. (by fun, I mean because it's more fun to get a good workout from stone than iron, IMO)

Mostly just for fun... Carlton and I looked at each other and decided that
lifting stones would be more fun than going down in the basement and doing ironwork. Lifting atlas stones is a great workout and provides whole body, functional, strength I think. Lots more muscle stabilizers and recruitment. That's not to say that I am just going to lift stones for all my workouts, but that I don't mind substituting them in for a deadlift or squat day. For the next 6 weeks until Loon Mtn games, I am trying to lay off the real heavy lifting, and throw more often, and when I can't throw, will be doing more speed type of stuff than heavy deads or squats. Also working on hand and grip strength again. |

8/8 - throws practice with Amy and Carlton Shedrick, Mike Berby and Bill
Waddell. 23.4lb Braemar - about 10 throws - best at around 32' 16lb stone - about 20 throws total - best at around 40' HWFD - about 10 throws - best at around 28' LWFD - about 6 throws - best at around 57' Caber - one toss of "big crooked" before it gave up the ghost... time to cut some more cabers, as we broke "little crooked" also. Bill W turned it though before it broke, that big bastard. Sheaf - about 6 tosses - no standards, but I would guess at around 25' to 27' or so with the 16lb. |

8/14 - practice with Shedricks and the Berby's
23.4lb braemar - 10 throws - best at 32' 16lb stone - 10 throws - best just over 40' Looks like I am shelving the full rotation for the rest of this season. South African is just more reliable I think... Carlton thinks I should glide.... ugh HWFD - 10 throws - over 30'! first time post surgery over 30' very happy, this is coming along nicely. LWFD - 6 throws - ugly Hammer - I just threw the 12lber which did not seem to bother my shoulder that much. Worked on throwing left about 5 throws, and then right about 5 throws... best left handed was about 60', best right handed was 99' then back to my place for some lifting. reverse grip barbell overhead press 135lb 5x5 Snatch 135lb x5, then switched to snatch high pulls 135lb 4x5 3" fat bar deadlift - double over hand 185lb x5, 225x1, 245x1 switched to alternating grip - 225x4 245x4, 315x1, 365x1, 415x0, 415x0 |

Here's some random video of the throwing today...
Sorry about the aspect ratio... forgot that I need to hold the phone sideways... we aren't actually all that chunky... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrFS0LHKO2k And, Hell no, Wayne - who the heck would use straps on a 3" bar lol? I think Carlton has some video of me doing the 245lb double overhand... I will post a link up when I get it. |
