The lift was certainly easy, but he sure was thinking about the grip!

I tried later to do just the bar 1-handed, (135lb) but think I was just too
tired. Will try next time to do it fresh and see if I can hold onto it. Not throwing in Maine this year, but I will be there to judge and cheer you all on. Looking forward to it. |

Al,
Most are 2" or even smaller. My bar has awesome aggressive knurling or there would be no way I could hang onto it at all. Though the negative side of that was when I tried 275 when my hand slipped big chunks of skin went with it. |

8/15 - caber cutting...
Headed over to a friend's place who had some deep old woods... found some beautiful Hophornbeam which are going to give people fits. This wood is incredibly dense, and the trees seemed to like to grow pretty straight. 2 nice 18fters and one 20'6, plus a nice 16ft maple for the ladies to work with. Workout was pulling/walking them out to the road. You pros coming to Goshen will have a nice stick to play with... |

8/28 Quechee games
Braemar - 31' Open stone - 39'+ HWFD - 28' LWFD - 56'+ Caber - turned qualifier - could not turn 22ft hickory stick - ended up 2nd place on degrees Sheaf - 21'6 - just missed PR at 24'6 WOB - 11' yuck Ended the day 4th overall, fairly happy with performance, though I did not hit any of my goal #s. Had foul troubles on both the HWFD and LWFD - timing issues (need to practice more, ugh) |

Good throwing workout for my first 2-a-day in a while in honor of Ryan.
Open stone - first over 42 foot in a VERY long time - very excited. LWFD - Had 3 over 59 foot, but couldnt quite get to 60 - but still way better than I have been throwing. Caber - ugh - not sure if I was running out of gas of if my new cabers are just way too hard, but was not good. Will have to get Carlton, Mike or Bill over to try them out to see if its just me. |

9/5 - Capital District games
Open Stone 41'7 (3rd) HWFD - 27' 11 (3rd) LWFD - 56'+ (2nd) Light Hammer - 85'+ (4th) Caber - 2:00 (4th) Sheaf - 27' (PR) (1st) WOB - 11' - (3rd) Overall - 1st by just a point. Got lucky with some of the other competitors bombing out in a few events - consistent throws wins the day. OK - 2 weeks to go to my last event of the year - what's the strategy? My stone and sheaf is going great - the weights for distance are a disaster in form and timing, and caber and WOB are lacking in the explosive/strength area. |

Well in just two weeks I don't think you are going to add much strength to really effect caber and wob. I would really work the line / turn drills, some box jumps and high pulls. Unless you have a platform and bumpers, I think if you can do the pulls outside, pull as high as you can and release. Mix a couple of normal wob pulls just to keep timing.

9/11 - a little throwing tune up for next weekend...
Braemar 23.4lb x6 - about 31ft 16lb Stone standing throw x5 - about 37ft 16lb Open Stone (MSA) x12- hit a nice 42'+ on the first one, then struggled to recapture form - had quite a few at 40ft, but couldn't find the big one... This is starting to feel real nice though... With a little luck I think I can hit a big one on Sunday. HWFD x6 - Still not good best about 28ft. LWFD x12 - also not good - best about 57ft. Both WFD are very slow, I am hitting the front all closed off and the weight is way too far behind me, end up pulling it 'backhand" - not good Caber - testing out the new cabers a bit. The Am Caber is tough, the Am A/Pro caber is even tougher, and the Pro caber is a monster. About 10 picks and about 7 throws total. |

Strategy = "So, what we'll be calling on is good ol' fashion blunt force trauma. Horsepower. Heavy-duty, cast-iron, piledriving punches that will have to hurt so much they'll rattle his ancestors. Every time you hit him with a shot, it's gotta feel like he tried kissing the express train. Yeah! Let's start building some hurtin' bombs!" Get it all out in the trig Tink...don't save anything. |

9/19 NH Highland Games
Braemar - 31'11 Open Stone - 39' 2 HWFD - 27' + LWFD - 57'+ Caber - 80 degrees (5 place) Sheaf - 24'6 had a nice pull at 27'6 hitting the bar pretty good but couldn't get it to roll over WOB - 11' Not a horrible day overall, had a pretty good foul on the HWFD which would have been close to 30'. Had some nice pulls on Caber, but should really have gotten a turn. Quality attempts at sheaf, then a very crappy WOB. Lots of fun for possibly my last game as an amateur. Now on to Strongman training for 2 months, then bread and butter deadlift/squat for rest of offseason. (plus lots and lots of hockey) |

9/21/10
Went over to the Shedrick's after work. I am done with throwing for this year, so am now concentrating on a strongman competition I have coming up in 3 weeks (Harpoon Brewery Octoberfest). Today was Axle Deadlift day. 130x5, 220x5, 310x5, 360x5, 400x5, 450x3, 400x5 Then I nearly died - let's just say that wearing braces and lunch coming back up is not a good combination. I felt better after that so did incline bench 135x5x2 and toyed around with an approximately 120lb keg to prepare for the keg carry portion of the strongman. Lots of skating the rest of this week (Thursday, Friday and Sunday), then back at it next Tuesday. |

I can't - plus the stones you are pressing are too light
My grandmother's 90th birthday party is that day, plus I have a officiating seminar I have to do on Sunday, and if I skate well there I will get a job refereeing high school games in Vermont, so wanted to be on my A game. |

Shedricks came over to play in my dungeon. Deadlift with straps (normal bar) - 135x5, 225x5, 315x5, 425x5, 455x4, 455x0 no straps, 455x1 Double overhand no straps, 365x5 with straps Messed around with Carlton's new 52lb kettlebell. I think I need to get some of these - put it on my Hannukah list I guess. (along with the bumper plates, the 42lb weight, and all the other toys I "need") Cleans and presses, swings, etc. Atlas stone loads 205lb maybe about 8 total? |

Strongman day at Harpoon - 10/9/10
1st event was a medley - 250lb keg carry 50ft, then 180lb keg in each hand farmers walk, 50ft. 2nd event - 225lb press for reps with crazy 10ft long 2" pipe with kegs and weights on it. I was not able to get it cleaned :( 3rd event - 450lb deadlift with the above apparatus - I got 4 with straps, and 1 more without straps. 4th event - overhead 1H dumbbell press - 2" pipe with 2 kegs and some weights I think was 110lb - got 1 rep in - extreme awkward apparatus. 5th event keg load - 200lb, 250lb, 250lb, and 305lb kegs loaded onto 48" box - had to carry the kegs about 15ft each time. got first 3 but missed the 305 - (couldnt carry it to the box) Think I could have loaded it, but my legs were gassed, and werent going to let me walk it in. Ended up last overall, but still a true test. Pretty happy with my performance in the medley and the keg load, deadlift wasnt horrible, but I was hoping to be able to get 8. Pressing just is not my strength. |
