2/9/11 took last ever Air Force physical fitness test throwing with Brezina (nice day, sunny and in 70's both of us had a pretty good day) 16lb light hammer x 10 pretty much all at or just over 100ft (best 102+) 56lb WOB x about 15= cleared 15ft on first attempt (first time I've done that) then about 7-8 tantalizingly close misses at 15'6"- had one sit on bar and get rejected - 28lb LWFD x about 6 (footing poor today) all low 60's 22lb Braemar x about 8- 33/34 ft will hit caber, open stone and heavy hammer tommorrow

2/10/11 more throwing with "el flaco" heavy hammer x 10 all high 70's a few at 80 ft 15lb open stone using MSA x 8 38-41'6" (need to get this back up) 28lb WFD x 8 62-66 ft (these are becoming consistently about 3-4ft farther than my training numbers from last year, so actually pleased with this- hopefully will translate into some more forays over 70ft at games this season) cabers- 4 easy turns with medium then onto BRONTOSAURUS (20ftx160lbsxno taper at all) 5 good picks, runs and pulls (best about 65 degrees) my relatively short off season is starting to come to close with Phoenix games in about 2 weeks (overall pretty happy as strength levels are pretty decent right now, making some slow but steady progress with technique)- was hoping to get some coaching in early in off season but couldn't make it work- fortunately will be spending about a week in March with one of the pros and anticipate some good gains after that |

2/16/11 back in Phoenix- out throwing with Brezina Light Hammer x 10 97-101ft (not where I want this to be but still better than a few months ago) 56lb WOB x about 20- cleared 15ft then about 12 close misses at 15'6"- then did about 6 throws with 42lb WOB and got new PR 18'6" (very happy considering the volume of 56lb throws directly preceding this)- had a couple off close misses at 19ft (think if I'm fresh this might go down) 56lb WFD x about 8- consistently 32-33 ft (despite flat release and poor transition into second turn) 42lb WFD x 5 (45ft)- this is a training PR 28lb WFD x 5 (66'6") again right at training PR 15lb open stone x 5 MSA 40-41ft (maybe running out of gas but not where I was 6-8 weeks ago when I was 44-45ft) throw again tommorrow, heavy hammer, LWFD, stone and Caber re-fiberglassed baby caber with HOT PINK casting material (definitely will make the rookies feel bad when they can't turn it and provide a great deal of humor for the rest of us) |

I played around with pinky on sunday.. thanks to brezina, i finally learned how to pull a caber correctly.. before, i let the caber get out in front of me and it was moreso of a front raise, lol.. now i know i need to pull the bottom into my hips then fire forward as soon as it leaves my shoulder... much better performance.. after 6-8 tosses with pinky i went over to your 13' log and did a couple easy turns with that, felt much better than when i had done them in the past.. no energy for the bronto though, lol..

2/23/11 (last ever workout at "DIE HARD GYM" in Phoenix)- great little gym- have gotten about 10-12 people out trying out the Highland Games over last few months and owner of gym now competes- so the place is very receptive to throwers (definitely gonna miss the place) last little bit of light training with skinny boy Brezina 10lb med ball push press releases up to about a 20-22ft ceiling x about 15-20 (these were a lot of fun, wish I would have included theses earlier) clean grip hang snatches 95lbs 5 triples 30 inch easy box jumps 5 x doubles rest up and hopefully have a good performance this weekend
Jake- if you look up the caber tutorial by Francis Brebner on YouTube he addresses not letting the caber get out in front of you among other things (if you can decipher his Scottish Brogue)- good luck Saturday- I want to see a 70ft+ LWFD from you |

2/26-27/11 Phoenix weekend (2 days of throwing A's on Sat and Masters on Sun) Sat-great competitive class with some top level A throwers ended up 5th place (was not displeased with throwing but not ecstatic either) stones 31+, 40+ (Braemar was a difficult to hold 24lb stone-so reasonably happy with this) Hammers 83, 101 (actually not bad for me lately but again I know I'm good for more) Weights 33, 61 (very disappointed with LWFD as I just couldn't throw it -had one decent one-maybe about upper 60's but fouled ) Caber- took 2nd place as only 1 of 3 guys to turn caber (was proud to see my training partner -"skinny boy" Brezina win this event- see I told you working with Bronto caber would pay off) WOB- cleared 15ft (for games PR) and had some reasonably good pulls at 16ft (enough to where I think 16ft is realistic for me)
Sunday- great Master's class with my favorite Nemesis (Brent Abbott)- 1st place Threw hammers first and noted an immediate decrease in marks over day before (also cold and wet so this may have factored in as well) 76/94 stones 31/38 (actually had some good warm-up open stone throws which I think were realistically 44ft-but once I got behind the trig I lost the relaxation of the warm-ups) weights 46+,63+ (heay weight not bad considering 2nd day and the slippery field conditions) Caber- 12 o'clock (first place) WOB 18ft (tried 18'6"- missed out in front and did not have the oomph that I had yesterday) will take next 2 days off in order to move back to Albuquerque and will start back lifting on Wednesday-following week will head out to spend the week with Dave Brown- who will miraculously fix all my thowing problems |

3/8/11 was supposed to spend week with Dave Brown, but unfortunately he had some unforseen personal stuff come up and we had to cancel Found some other dude named Ryan Vierra who claims to know something about highland games to throw with instead Started out at Ryan's ranch where he and another Pro- Rusty Price- were out throwing hammers as I drove up I started out with some Braemar stone (where I have some serious technique issues)- first one I throw lands in a big pile of cow crap and splatters all over Rusty- not a good way to start the day- anyway did about a dozen or so throws with Braemar stone and then on to open stone throws to include working some drills to keep me on my right leg as well as to open my hips- definitely have a long way to go here next did some throws with a 14lb WFD did not measure but according to Ryan/Rusty was getting about 120ft then worked a bunch of figure 8 casts/cast and drops drill with 28 to get my entry on track- threw about 5 or 6 full throws best at about 75ft (again not measured but according to Ryan and Rusty) - if its accurate that would be about a 4 ft PR then ate some grub with Ryan at his famous burrito restuarant finished afternoon tired/sore and covered in cow poop- but thoroughly satisfied- gonna do it again in the AM (can't wait!!) |

3/9/11 Day 2 of Ryan Vierra trainathon (Rusty Price an I got in 5 solid hours of straight throwing without a break with Ryan coaching the whole time) Started out with 56lb WOB (threw over Ryan's forklift forks- it only went up to about 14'6") bothy Rusty and I had no problems clearing it standing style- did about 10 attempts next did some cabers with 7 throw with moderate 17ft 100lb caber was able to turn it without too much trouble- we then go onto try Ryan's giant caber 20ft/168lbs- Ryan says only he and Mike Smith have ever turned it and he's had it for a long time- Rusty and I get 2 decent attempts maybe 70 degrees-ish I get my 3rd attempt in and caber breaks as it hits the ground, I feel awful but Ryan (just as nice as can be) is just kind of like oh well lets move on to next event start out doing 14lb WFD standing throws x abunch end up getting about 80 ft (Ryan says his best is around 115ft- just ridiculous) then we do 28lb WFD standing throws- I get out to around 52ft (Ryan says his best is 74ft then on to 1 turns with 28 my best goes right at 70ft (according to Ryan who has been throwing from this same trig for a long long time)- this is a huge improvement for me (going to buy a tape measure tonight and bring it tomorrow cause I'm having a hard time believing my throws are going that far) next standing throws with 56 WFD get to about 24ft (Ryan says Dave Brown has done 34ft- amazing) Next some single turns with 56- get out to about 33ft then went and worked on light hammer- have a huge amount of room to impove here- worked a lot of winds and a few throws- getting better at turning shoulders to catch the weight, getting much more relaxed and longer- (Ryan said I was holding breath and actually turning red during all the winds originally- so key is just to relax a whole bunch finished up with some more stand throws with light stone- trying to keep hips open, lead with hips and get reverse C position Rusty and I had great day pushing each other all day long to throw farther and farther went to eat some grub again at Lila's famous house of giant Burritos then went and watched some of Ryan's track throwers workout a bit Rusty and I will be back tomorrow for another big day tomorrow |

3/10/11 day 3 of Ryan Vierra "hell week", actually having a great tme and making very good progress with both understanding and execution of throws, body however is a little bit beat 4 more hours of non stop throwing again with Rusty Price and I pushing each other while Ryan does a little coaching- brought tape measure and marking flags today to verify numbers (Ryan was only about 1 ft off at the 100ft mark from yesterday so previous marks were pretty close to legit) warmed up with a little overhead stone throwing off the grass (Rusty and I had a little contest with the 16lb stone-and the old guy wins by about 6"-threw just over 50ft -unfortunately it was the only thing I could get Rusty at today next did some more 14lb standing WFD throws- got to about 82 ft then did some single turns with 14lb WFD- got just over 102ft then did some more single spins with 28, got a bunch out around 65-66ft (Rusty was out around 72ft and Ryan actually chucked some out around 75ft) then worked 16lb hammer worked winds, learning to rotate body to catch hammer then to counter it with lower body and work the hammer as long as possible (I am beginning to develop a ok right side but have not yet got a decent left side or release -but at least I now understand what I am supposed to do) did 1 wind releases was getting 100ft did 2 and 3 winds got some near 110ft (definitely have more potential here) finished off with another contest with Rusty in stones (he threw 23lb stone and I threw 16lb stone first Braemar style then spinning) got him by a couple of inches in Bramaer at just over 40ft, he got me by about 1.5 feet in spinning contest with me again only getting about 40ft- so Rusty won over all combined title one more day of throwing to go tomorrow (I see some Motrin in my near future) |

Last day at Ryan's el rancho de throw Got another 3.5 hours of solid throwing with Rusty Started with some more 16lb overhead stone throws to warm up - got just over 50ft Then did some more standing throws with 14 & 28 wfd (80 & 51ft) Single turns with 28 out to 69 ft Then went to 2 turns but could not hit positions and actually was a little worse Went to 22 and 16 lb hammer wind for sets of 20 wind (theory being relax and work with hammer or die) Finished with another contest medley with Rusty Which he wins by about 2 inches in the aggregate Overall assessment was that this was an outstanding learning experience, Ryan is a really great person and it is clear why he reached the pinnacle of this sport I've got a lot of work to do |
