New Brunswick Highland Games Day 1 Braemar 22#: 40'2.5 SB 1st HWFD: 42' SB 2nd Heavy Hammer: 96'9 3rd WOB: 15' tied 3rd Keg for Distance: 56'+ 2nd woo beer! Day 2 OStone 20#: 42' 2nd LWFD: 81'2.5 2nd Light Hammer: 125'11 2nd Caber 20', 110#: 1:30, 1:30, 11:45 4th (I think) Overall 2nd This was easily one of the most fun times I've had at a games in a long time. We all say that a lot but I truly do mean it. I drove to Rob Meulenberg's house Friday and then we carpooled up to Canada, my first time there. We got there and dominated life. That poor hotel toilet never saw it coming. All the stereotypes about how awesome Canada and Canadians are, are true. Everyone was top notch and incredibly accommodating and the field and implements were awesome. Competitors in the open class were me, Rob, Matt Doherty, Danny Frame, Dirk Bishop, and Joe Hall. Stones were pretty good for me. Hit over 40' for the first time in 2 years in braemar. This needs to become more common for me. I ended up edging out Doherty here by .5 inches. It was the last time that happened for me. I'll take it! The 20# open stone was the heaviest open stone I've ever thrown and I really didn't hit a good glide with it. The Canadians get more points for heavier stones on their rankings so Rob and I were subjected to it. Doherty went 50'11 which is absolutely ridiculous. Weights were great. The lead weights they use were so dense and the triangle handles were awesome. I felt smooth and long on all the throws. All HWFD throws were over 41' and 42' ties my PR so I was stoked. LWFD was good, I held onto the first one a bit but then fell into a groove and had another day over 80' so that's very encouraging. Hammers were pretty good. Heavy hammer I was having issues with again on the first 2 throws. Tacky wasn't setting, I was pulling in, all dumb excuses. Sucked it up on my last one and managed a 96'9 which in my brain is terrible but in reality is only 4-5 feet off my PR. I will triumph over HH! Light was good, felt so long and fast but distances were a bit off. Must have been slower than I thought! But I think a hair off 126' aint too shabby. Caber was great for me. The comp caber wasn't too bad but my accuracy screwed me. Not like I would have won the overall or anything if I hit a 12, but I wanted one dammit! Murderberg took the win here with 2 beastly 12's. Man is a monster! Also we took pulls at the challenge Dirk Bishop caber. 21', 150# and it was absolutely ridiculous. Dirk, Danny, Matty, Rob and I all agreed that there is a good chance it was unturnable. So if you think you can, call up Mr. Bishop! Maybe he'll bring it to Loon...hahaha. Danny Frame "won" with a 45 degree pull. WOB was poor. I keep changing my pull whenever I get to 16' and I end up being a goon. I will keep practicing maintaining my form and length. 16' will fall and hopefully 16'6. Murderberg went 16'10 for the win and a PR. So much power. I had so much fun throwing with the Canadians and they all treated us so well. Rob and I may have been the dirty American's but we were treated very well. Thank you to Joe Hall for having us both out and making me want to come back to New Brunswick ASAP! QUICK STORY: We all went out to eat at a chain restaurant, bout 15 of us or so, and at the end of the meal the wait staff comes over to our table with a birthday dessert for someone. They start singing and walk over to Rob and wish him a Happy Birthday. He is STONE COLD the whole time. No smile. No frown. No nothing. He just watches the dessert come down in front of him as the wait staff finishes singing and walks away. Danny Frame says from across the table "Rob! I didn't know it was your birthday!?" Dirk starts laughing so hard and then the whole table erupts with laughter. Rob's birthday is in December. Danny got him good. Those damn Canadians.

Got the itch to go tossing. So I did. OStone 16# Stands x8 best of 47' Glides x8 best of 51'+ all throws with no reverse. Really wanted to work pushing up and over that left leg and blocking haaaaaard. Seemed to work. LWFD x6 best of 80'+ everything 78'+. Just no extra "pizzaz". I will be getting this back. Was about to throw heavy hammer but after 1 throw I felt the head shift on my delivery and upon further investigation, it was indeed on it's way off of the hammer shaft. So I called it. I'll get it next time. Hoping to lift once this week, something heavy to get my legs tired and then another heavy lift one day next week with sprinkled speed work (sprints too) and throwing of course. 3 weeks(ish) until Maine games, which will be uber loaded.

Hit the gym today. My back/glute area has been bothering me all season and I have been able to throw with little to no issues but lifting is no bueno. Did some reading about it and I really need to start using my glutes more in my lifts and strengthening my lateral abdominals (is this a thing?)/obliques. Warm Up DB RDLs 3x10 @ 45's really activating my glutes and hammies. Never tried this before squatting so I wanted to give it a whirl. 1 Min Plank Front Squat 135x5, 185x5, 225x5, 275x3, (added belt for safety) 295x3, 315x1, 335x1 wow. Felt really easy. Haven't squatted heavy in forever and this is 10# off my PR. Da F**K... Also, back did not hurt at all. Jump Fronts for speed 20 sec. rest 3x3 @ 95 Bench 135x10, 185x5, 225x5, 275x3, 275x3, 275x3 done. I felt weak as shit here. Mega ugh. Tried close gripping 225 before I moved to 275 and my shoulder said nay nay. Damn. Light Wide Grip Lat Pull downs 2x20 Planks, side planks, and Glute Bridges w/ 50# DB a lotxImweakasshit. Feeling really good right now. Hopefully throwing hammers tomorrow.

Got out to throw hammers after a crazy downpour Heavy Hammer x15 best of 100'-101' this was just the rebuilding of the feeling I have apparently lost. Re-remembered my rhythm and cues and by the end we were back in business. Most throws in mid 90's. I have 4 games (so far) left on my season and my goal is to see triples digits in heavy hammer for all of them. Light Hammer x10 best of 121' had nothing left. Rhythm was blegh and energy low. I was expecting this after yesterdays heavy squats. BUT my body felt great, back was good, so these are the positives. The Maine games have some of the better heavy hammer thrower pros out there and comparatively this season, I am Schmucky the Clown. Steps up must be made.

Got out to throw a bit tonight HWFD x8 best of 41'+ great sesh here. Quick feet was the focus and it worked really well. LWFD x8 best of 79'-80' lacking the speed to go further today and my left leg was hanging more than I care to admit. That being said, it felt pretty good. Thumb is more sore than usual though. HH x14 best of 104'. Fixed my own 22# hammer with a 1/2 handle after it has a rattan in it and I wasn't sure it was going to hold so I tested it out with no boots and going slow (hence the higher # of throws). But it held like a dream and I booted up and went after about 6 of them. 4 of the 6 over 100' and it felt long and easy. Confidence restoring. Going away Tuesday for 3 days on a retreat for work like I always do. Wont be much to do training wise. They have a crappy gym with machine equipment from the 80's so I might get my pump on but otherwise taking it easy. If the throwing bug hits me I might be able to sneak away to toss...maybe. Lifting tomorrow.

Listen, I understand my place there. I am going to shoot for PRs and hope they are good enough to take a few scalps and break into the top 10. That being said, it's going to be awesome to throw against you for the first time ever. With our baldness combined, the sheer glare will blind our foes into submission and we shall prevail!
Or get sunburnt, whatever haha.

Sore today. In the old upper back and glutes. I like it, but it took a while to get going when I went to throw. OStone 16# Stands x8 best of 47' I was trying so hard and it was going no where Glides no reverse x8 best of 50' see above. Glides w/ Reverse x2 best of 49' I called it because I wasn't making any progress. Heavy Hammer x6 best of 101' form was on the whole time. Light Hammer x3 best of 128' Very surprised. Arms must have been more relaxed, I'll take it. I was expecting low numbers cause of yesterdays exertion of speed/quicky-twitchy-ness so I am pleased. Resting tomorrow, throwing Sunday and maybe Monday with MAYBE a speedy lift in there but no promises. Maine in one week.

Threw both WFD and it was neither great nor terrible. But throws were taken. Pre-games throw tomorrow or Tuesday and a speed lift and then rest until Maine. Whoop!

Threw with TROB and Jonesy OStone 16# Stands x2 best of 47' Glides x5 best of 49-'50' I have a tweak in my left neck/trap and pushing the stone in hurts the shit outta it so I took it easy here. Easily more in the tank. HWFD x6 best of 37'-38' junk. Thumb was sore still and form was poop. That being said none of these felt like they were going to go far at all and I had a good HWFD practice about a week ago so I know it's there. Just gotta put it together. LWFD x3 best of 78', thumb again but form better than HW. Getting feet down is my nemesis. HH x5 best of 102'-103'. Didn't feel like I was hitting delivery hard at all but definitely long and delivering up. Awesome. I feel like when my weights are bad in practice it ruins the whole time cause I left feeling like sh*t. But I'm gonna man up, do a wee bit o' sheaf and wob tomorrow and maybe some plyo type stuffs and then call it for the week. Excited for the weekend.

JUmp ropes hit me in the back of the head often. Keeps me focused. Eyes on the prize.
Rower works too. I use them from time to time. The length between times being too long.

Jump rope is awesome. Seriously, I really dig running. Always have. But Smiff is right on...distance running at your weight Jeff (430) is going to wreck your knees. Got the C2 and it has made a WORLD of difference.
