9/21 - 9/23

New Hampshire Highland Games, Lincoln, NH

Heavy Hammer- 104'6
Light Hammer- 126'6
16# Ostone- 47'11
HWFD- 43'5
Caber- DFL
WOB- 15'
26# Braemar- 34'9
LWFD- 81'11

Overall: 7th

My favorite weekend of the whole year. Had a great time and threw some good events, and threw some bad events. Classic Jeff. This comp was over the course of 3 days, with hammers on Friday. Long weekend but totally worth it.

Hammers were fine but I was disappointed. The whole time it was misting so the comp last a good 20 minutes longer than it should have just due to people drying off the hammer handle each time and making sure it was secure. No one lost a single hammer but that definitely killed momentum. I really wanted a PR in Heavy hammer and just didnt get it done. 4 Winds worked well, though! Light hammer was a disappointment as I just didnt hit the positions and follow the cues I usually do. Oh well.

Day 2 started with stone which is a great stone and I pooped the bed with it. 3 throws all at 47' something. Garbage. Should have been 50' all day. HWFD was much better. Went 42'+. 43'+. and then 45'2 but it was a slight foul. Very sad, would have gained me 1 spot and jumped into 2nd. But that's how it goes! Caber was garbage and I took last. I keep saying it and keeping doing nothing, but I need to practice. I WILL cut a tree this off season and brandish a caber. I will. WOB was fine, had some solid pulls at 16' but none came close to going over. Just gotta limp through this season with this event.

Day 2 was a little better. I hate that big ass braemar. My last throw was 34'+ and it rolled off my hand so that would have been my best one. Way she goes. LWFD was nice, went foul, 79+, 81'11 which bumped me 3 places into 3rd. Was a big throw for me. Very happy.

Overall feelings about the weekend are 50/50. Weights are moving, hammers are holding steady, stones could be better, and caber/wob are whatever. I do have to thank Holly and Bill Crawford for their fantastic hospitality and great games as always. Especially due to them having to deal with the hurricane first, super incredible!

Gotta show up this next weekend with every once of focus possible and just go for broke. No safety throws. Gonna be a blood bath, and I cannot wait.

9/28/18 - 9/30/18

Celtic Classic Highland Games, Bethlehem, PA

PROS: Spencer Tyler, Chuck Kasson, Nathan Burchett, Zach Riley, Damien Fisher, Jeff Kaste, Kevin Becker, Wes Kiser, Dave Barron

22# Hammer- 104'4
24.5# Braemar- 38'4
HWFD- 43'4
Sheaf- 27'
Caber- 55
16# Hammer- 124'9
17# Ostone- 51'8
LWFD- 84'1
WOB-15'

Overall: 3rd

What an unbelievable weekend. There is really nothing like the Celtic Classic. With the close exception of Loon, it's the only games where you feel like a real professional athlete and people want to talk to you and know you're name. It's a really cool experience. Jayne Ann Recker always does a fantastic job and I really appreciate her hard, arduous work.

I threw, what could arguably be, my most consistent and complete games ever. With the exception of Caber, and a little exception of sheaf, I did everything I needed to do to keep pace with the competition, and set myself up for the circumstances.

Hammers went tremendously. I believe that had we thrown on flat ground, that my Heavy Hammer throw would have been a PR since I was less than a foot off of it throwing up onto a mound. Light was consistent and while not spectacular, enough to hold off the comp.

Weights were the stars of the show for me. Again I didn't do anything wild, I just did what I knew I could do and it paid off nicely. The ground was really slick from the rain the day before during HWFD but for some reason it didnt effect me. Maybe I do it wrong, who knows. I wanted another 45' throw but I was only good for 2 43's and a foul. LWFD was awesome because I knew it was going to be one of the deepest comps of the weekend. I opened with 78'+, and then 80'11. By the time I was up again for round 3, I was sitting in 5th. My final throw I slapped out the 84'1 which tied a very injured Spencer who limped through that throw, but he passed his 3rd throw and his first was less than my next best so I garnered 2nd place points there. It was things like that which really propelled me through the weekend.

Stones went well, braemar still sucks. I should have been over 40' all day with that stone but all I could manage was 38' again. Ostone I was on. Every throw I stayed back, stayed long, and flicked it well. All 3 over 50' and 2 over 51'. Super clutch.

Sheaf was meh. All my pulls at 30' were high enough but trajectory was way off. Just need more time under a bar here. WOB was alright as well, had 1 solid attempt at 16' but otherwise, I was just too done for to give it more.

Caber was garbage. I looked like a noob. This cost me so many points. Not that doing better would have given me a shot at 2nd or anything, that was pretty well wrapped up by Chuckie, but I would at least like to look like I know wtf I am doing.

Overall, I couldnt be happier with 3rd. It was so unexpected because I honestly thought I'd only be good for 5th or so. I know that next year will be a whole new ballgame with a crop of great Ams turning pro, so I will need to be on top of my shit from the get go. Offseason starts next week!

I'm sure Beau did just that. Naturally I am biased since he is my brother and I am not as experienced travelling to games around the country as many others but to me he is the best highland games announcer I have heard. I imagine his background as a history teacher and as an athlete helps a lot with that.

Beau was a phenomenal announcer. When he finally hangs up his cleats, he should be on every big games short list for a top notch announcer!

10/8/18

After a well deserved week off, I am back at it in the weight room. Had all kinds of ideas of what I was going to do in the first half of my off season, even considered running Smolov. In the end, that was madness and I am going squat 2-3x per week, but I will be smart about it. Then, come Jan/Feb I am switching to a ME/DE split for upper and lower to see where that takes me. Started today with easing into squats and of course shit went down.

Warm up (50x30# DB Goblet squats, 50 reps of Banded good mornings)

Squat

135x5, 225x5, (going into this next set, I felt something twinge in my left adductor...awesome) 225x5 felt ok just weird in the hole. 255x8 (ok now it was defintely noticeable so instead of stopping I switched to 20" Box squats and soldiered on) 255x8, 255x5, 275x5, 285x2, 285x2, 305x1. Weight was easy, but I will be doing the same routine 2 more times this week (depending on the adductor).

Straight Leg Dead Lift w/ Snatch Grip

*all sets against blue bands 135x8, 135x8, 135x8 (no pain, good)

TKEs against thick green band

3x15 each leg

Ab Wheel

3x10

Not a ton of volume but I will be making up for it later this week!

BB Bent Over Rows / Banded Lat Pull Downs

135x8, 135x8, 185x8, 185x8, 185x8 / 4x15 @ blue band
