BJJ - 1 Hour

Back at Kings MMA after 2 weeks of travel! Finally! Conditioning was off, but everything else felt fine. My hip was giving my a ton of problems last week because I was spending 10-12 hours a day sitting in a class, but once I got home & got some rest, it was 100% fine today. The entire class today was specific training on open guard. Start with feet on hips & sleeve grip. Top person is trying to pass, bottom person is trying to maintain control, not sweep or submit. 5 minutes on bottom, 5 min on top, for the entire class. Good stuff. I got to spend some time working on positions I rarely use, like Reverse DLR & X-Guard.

THROWING

Stones - 16#
5x Standing Throws
5x Spins
3x Glide

LWFD - 28#
~10x Full throws

Light Hammer - 16#
6x Throws - no blades...

Got out for some throwing today, everything felt decent. The spin technique for stones was messy, so I tried a basic glide & it felt a lot better. I'm thinking I may switch to glide if I can get a bump with that over standing. LWFD was ok, couple of throws in the mid-50's, which isn't terrible. Hammer was terrible, as usual, I need to go buy some boots, since my blades pulled through the bottom.

Was going to do Press after bench but all the squat racks were full. So I was going to do DB Rows, but all the flat benches were in use (including the one I just vacated). So I thought I'd do some curls, but there were people everywhere doing curls & crowded around the curl BB rack. It pretty much sucked & made me wish I still had a home gym. Anyway I left & decided I'm taking the fam out for some excellent sushi tonight.

BJJ - 1 Hour

Solid work today. Conditioning isn't up to par for grappling, so today was really good LOL. Worked specific training on open guard, 5 min bottom, 5 min top, 2x each. I worked with another purple belt who's close to 400 pounds. It was tough but a great opportunity for me to work on guard recovery and not getting smashed. Then I had 4x 5 min sparring sessions, two of those were with the same big purple belt :D Good times, learned some stuff.

BJJ - 1.5 Hours

Worked open guard specific training this morning, just like last time. Then straight to sparring. Rolled 6 rounds, 5 or 6 minutes each with 60 seconds rest. I was pretty tired, but got in some good, tough training today.

So I jumped into the gripper thing too quickly & gave myself a nice big blister on the inside of one of my fingers. I think I need to tape the handle of the CoC 1.5 if I'm going to be doing 100 reps with it.

Also, ended up working until about 7:00 yesterday & then had to pack for a short trip to Santa Barbara, so didn't make it to the gym yesterday. Will hopefully be able to get in on Friday when I get back.

Got a new tattoo in Santa Barbara, so not much going on while this thing heals. Was planning on a deload next week before the Queen Mary Highland Games anyway.

THROWING

Got out to OC Highlander's practice today, threw O-Stone & B-stone, light & heavy hammer, light & heavy WFD & a little WOB. Everything felt decent, elbow didn't bother me.

Got some larger washers & fixed my blades, we'll see how long they last. I need to get to Lowe's & buy a new glove before next weekend (wish they sold separates lol).

Work has been super busy the last couple of days. Lot of driving, lots of early mornings & late nights. When I got back home tonight, I did about 30 minutes of shotput (or stone) drills. Working on the glide - I think this is going to be better for me than the spin that I've been trying to do for the last few years.

THROWING

Light Hammer - 16#
10x throws, best around 87'

Stones - 12.5#
5x Standing throws, best around 39'
5x Glides, best around 42'

LWFD - 28#
4x Full Throws, best around 53'

Really good session today! I think I fixed a MAJOR issue with my hammer! I finally figured out how to get my hips engaged by closely watching one of the good hammer throwers at practice on Sunday. Instead of breaking it down & over-thinking, I just tried to mimic his hip motion & timing. And all of a sudden it "clicked". & I was throwing 80' easily. Last time out I was struggling to throw in the mid-70's.

With stones, the glide videos & drills I did yesterday helped. My gliding throws were a few feet farther than the standing ones, so that's great.

WFD wasn't great & timing seemed off. Oh well, 2 out of 3 ain't bad.

Looking forward to throwing at the Queen Mary on Sunday.

Queen Mary Highland Games

Good time throwing today, lots of ups & downs. But it's the first meet of the year, so that's pretty much what you expect. This was also my 1st time throwing with the 40+ Masters Division. Good Guys, they made it a really good day! Heavy Hammer was first, but the time I was warm, the event was over :) Light hammer was better, I expect to PR in this event this year for sure - the changes I've made are paying off. Braemar Stone wasn't bad, Open Stone was a mess - not sure why. HWFD was ok, but I took a 5-hour energy & LWFD was a complete shit-show. I'm blaming it on the 5-Hour. And Not surprisingly, WOB, Sheaf & Caber (which I never practice) sucked. Imagine that. I really need to get some equipment so I can practice these events. The Caber was a big one, 110 pounds & 14.5 feet. Only 1 guy turned it.

Overall I had fun & learned a few things that will help me in the future - next meet is in May. Here are my numbers:

Braemar Stone (22#): 29'2" - 3rd
Open Stone (16#): 35'1" - 3rd
Light Weight For Distance (28#): 50'1" - 2nd
Heavy Weight for Distance (42#): 36' - 2nd
Light Scottish Hammer (16#): 87'10" - 3rd
Heavy Scottish Hammer (22#): 65'1" - 4th
Weight Over Bar (42#): 13' - 4th
Sheaf - 20' - 6th
Caber - 75 deg - 3rd

Overall: 3rd Place :)

Got some photo sequences from the Queen Mary Highland Games. This is great, because I can see exactly what I need to work on here.

This is Open Stone, I'm using a Glide technique, not a spin.

**Feel free to comment or critique**

Here's what I think:

In the 1st pic, I have some separation between upper & lower body, but should be more. Also doesn't look like enough of my weight is on my right foot & my feet are probably not 100% pointed toward 3:00 - I could see that in another picture.

In this pic, I am starting to open up with my upper body, but hips are still really closed

In this pic, upper body is clearly in front of my lower body, lower body can't engage at all at this point.

On the release I'm too forward, chest is too vertical.

Definitely have stuff to work on.

BJJ - 1 Hour, gi

Warmed up with grip fighting, switching opponents every 60seconds, then drilled two standing guard passes. After that it was 5x5 minute rounds of sparring, 1 minute rest between rounds. My conditioning was better than I thought it would be, so that's good. I did try to berimbolo a small wiry guy & he took my back instead lol. Oh well, that's how you learn. I tried to work on side control escapes today - and that's just not easy. Need to keep working this.

You clearly haven't seen me throw.  I was about to compliment you on keeping your chest up.

O-stone is tough - at least for me - to keep all the pieces parts working together.

I hear ya! I just switched to glide instead of spin - I decided there were just way too many moving parts spinning for me to get consistent. And maybe you're right - the finish isn't terrible, I think my primary issue is lack of separation. At least I know what to work on.

Here are some more photo's:

42-pound Heavy Weight for Distance:

And here's the 28-pound Light Weight for Distance:

These aren't terrible, but I'm not getting enough separation & I think I'm probably not bending my knees enough.

Got some caber pictures...

I picked up a nice tip on caber, but not until after my 3rd toss, so didn't get to try it on Sunday. Basically, I've been trying to balance the caber & then run with it before throwing it. The tip is to let the caber get heavy on your shoulder and then DRIVE into it to build the momentum. Just a slightly different way of thinking about it but I'm hoping it will pay off.

I got 3rd in caber on Sunday with 75 degrees - didn't turn it. This caber was 14'5" & 110 pounds.

In this photo you can see it's a little in front of me:

BJJ - 2 Hours, gi & nogi

100% sparring today, 5 minute rounds in nogi, then 10-minute rounds in the gi. I was exhausted at the end of class. Some really good guys there today as well - the gi class had 2 whitebelts, 1 blue belt, 4 purple belts & 5 black belts.

Got my ass kicked lots. Good times.

THROWING

Braemar Stone - 12.5# Stone

6x Toes-on-board throws
6x Knee to ground throws
10x Standing Throws

LIFTING
Bench Press

Did some drills with Stone today, trying to make sure I'm using my hips - lots of improvement to be made here. I used the 12.5# stone to make sure I could get the reps in. Screwed something up in my shoulder throwing, not sure whats up with that.

Bench felt heavy. The 235 was probably a 5RM. Felt weak.

BJJ - 1 Hour

Today was just sparring again, and we had a few more black belts drop in to train. I got to roll with 3 of the black belts, a couple of purple belts and two blue belts. Pretty tired but good stuff - had a lot of opportunity to work on my side control defense & escapes.

Was in Hawaii last week, and got to take the family. Super cool. I worked, for a few days, then took a few days to vacation a bit. We did several hikes & some nice snorkeling. Good times!

Tonight I went back to BJJ - did a 1 hour class followed by 30 minutes of sparring. Conditioning isn't where it should be, but I blame the Loco Moco's from last week.

BW: 216.2

BJJ - 1 Hour Gi

Worked on a setup from closed guard to break posture & get in position to triangle or omoplata. Good stuff to review. Then sparred 3x5 minute rounds.

Planning on lifting later today.

THROWING

Stones - 12 lb.
6x toe-boards
6x drop knee throws
6x Standing throws

LWFD
10x Full Throws

Light Hammer
winds
6x Throws

Nice warm day here, 76 degrees, so got some throwing in. I don't think I'm leading with my lower body in stones, really need to focus on this. LWFD were tough, need to continue to work on my footwork & staying balanced here. Don't need distance right now, need quality reps. Hammer was ok, but the blade pulled through my boot again. I think these boots are finally trash.
