Finally had a nice day to get some throws in. The plan was to do both hammers and both weights for distance.

Started with Heavy Hammer and it was a disaster. I was completely off balance and out of sync for about 5 throws. I got discouraged and decided to switch to Light Hammer. Quit City.

Light Hammer was no different to start off. Something was just off, and I couldn't figure it out. Finally, on about my 10th toss it started clicking. I added a forth wind and rolled with it. My next 6-7 throws were in the 105-108 range. My comp PR is 105'2"

Feeling good about this new groove with the 16, I decide to go back to the 22 for some more tosses. They went 81',82,85,86,86,88,and 89'. My Comp PR is 82" so I was very happy with these especially given that I was tired at that point.

I totaled around 35-40 tosses which is way more than I usually do. I called it a day, and will try to get some 28 an 56 in tomorrow.

Winter is Coming...

Nice PR's. I'm sure you could have hit 300+ if you skipped 295.

Sean- I was thinking the same thing.

practice with 56 and 28. Went at 60-70 effort. Just trying to hit the positions. No measurements today. 3 days 'til game day in Ohio and weather looks great. Hopefully PR's will follow.

4-6-13 Reynoldsburg tartan days

Excellent comp put on by GLSAA.

Good news was four PR's, Bad news was that I forgot my gold bond at home.

Sean was there, and we always seem to have some big throws when we're together. No exception here. I had four PR's, and Sean had three.

Heavy Weight- 32'

Started with this today as the masters and women had the traditional order. Bad finish on all three throws. I think I am pulling to soon and need to wait just a bit longer. Sean had a 37+ in extras. He will be at 40+ before the year is through.

Light Weight- 70'11" PR

Again not solid with the finish, but it my first time in the 70's, so I am thrilled to break through that barrier.

Braemar- 37'3" PR

Big, goofy stone that is hard to tuck, but for some reason I could get some good distance out of it.

Open Stone- 46'9" PR

Nice stone. My glide could be quicker and my finish could be lead with my chest more.

Caber- 12,12,12

shootout stick as the black widow was broken in round 1.

Heavy Hammer- 78'9"

Meh...no blades as we through off a baseball gravel infield.

Light Hammer- 102'6"

This was a "no blades PR" for me. I really need to work on my hammers over the next couple months to keep up my ranking with the big dogs.

Sheaf- 37' PR

I was horrible a couple weeks ago in Illinois at the sheaf(26'). Luckily I had a friend with me who took video. I was able to see right away what I was doing wrong. I took that to this comp, and saw myself PR by 3 feet. This is proof that I need to take more video of my throws. Video=improvement. I topped off the glsaa standards. Video will follow later when I have a chance.

WOB 14'

I was still cautious do to my lower back. I wore a belt all day which is new to me. I made 14' on my first or second attempt(can't recall). Went to 14'6" and had 1 good pull. I want to be a 15' thrower every meet, so I have work to do.

I have about 7 weeks until my next comp, so its back to the weight room for a strength phase, and lots of practice.

A.M. Throws

Finally no snow, no rain, no little league practice, or anything else to prevent some throwing.

light hammer x10

Heavy hammer x10

Experimenting with some things.  Number of winds, when to speed up, ect.  Light weight went very well.  All throws were over 102', with my best couple in the 110-113 range.  Heavy was ok, most throws were in the 84-87' range.

I am going to throw hammers 2-3/week for the next month leading up to Alma.  I am hoping reps will lead to better form, consistency, and distances.  Will post hammers video later.

HWD

I wanted to simulate a comp, so I warmed up and took three throws.  After the initial three, I took four more.  I got the first three on video.  I can see lots to work on technique wise, but I am very happy with the distances.  Big throws for me.  I am excited to see where this event can go after I get some serious practice reps in and clean up the form.

I'm right there with you on hammers. Gonna make it my focus as well.

On your hwfd, try waiting on your cast a bit longer, your turning pretty early. This is something that has worked well for me.

On your second throw, if you watch closely, your feet land after the first turn and the weight is completely behind you. I have noticed improvements if I try to keep the weight in line with my hip for the hwfd.

Sean, I do need to be a bit more patient. I am also not lowering my hips at all throughout the entire throw. Not using my legs at all.

Last night's lifts:

Was going to try deadlift for the first time in several weeks. Back is feeling great now. I decided to be patient, and give myself one more week of pain free time before easing back into deads.

Instead I decided to kill my lats.

So, it's been a rough week. I had a vasectomy last Friday which had me in bed until Tuesday, and then Thursday night I lost 11 pounds on the flu diet. It took until this morning to feel somewhat normal again. As of now I have nearly returned to my normal weight of 242 lbs. Since I was feeling better, and have been itching to workout...

Front squats

135x10
225x5
225x5
315x5 x 5

I labored through these. Very sluggish.

Jump squats

135x5
185x5 x4
225x5 x2

I love these. I get deep in the hole and get about 4-6 inches off the ground. Going to make this a staple on leg day.

RDLs

135x10 x2
185x10 x2

Leg press, curl, and extension

Deficit box jumps.

Very difficult due to lack of energy, but fought through it. Next weeks numbers should be a lot better.

Its been a while since updating.  Been rehabbing a back injury.  I had a few comps along the way, and feel like I am about 85-90% back to where I was before the injury.  Gaylord Highland Games this weekend.  Ohio Scottish Festival last weekend.  PR'd in HWD there, and hit 15' in WOB.  Just missed 15'6". Hoping for big throws this weekend.  I had a really good practice yesterday.  Here's hoping.

Gaylord Highland Festival

Started with Heavy hammer.  PR'd but was hitting 90' in practice three days prior.  86'1.5" PR

Light Hammer.  Was shit.  102+

Braemar.  Big ugly rock 25lbs with no good spot to tuck. 34+

Open Stone.  I have been tossing from a standing position due to being uncomfortable with my back.  Did 1 from the stand 44+, and glided the other two.  It needs work.

Sheaf 20lb.  Came in early at 20' to get some reps in.  Made 28'  tried 30' but no go.  I was playing with different spot to stick it.  Found the best spot on my last pull.  Wide right...

WOB.  Crushed 14' and sucked after that.  video revealed I was pulling before the weight reached the low point.  Fixable.

Caber.  1:00  I need to make this event a strength instead of a weakness.  Going to make a caber ugly style.

HWD.  PR'd on first attempt.  I got a little sloppy afterwards but was still in the 35' range.  36'11" PR

LWD  Pulled out the win in the event on my last toss.  73'8" PR

Its hard to complain with three PR's, but I got a lot of work in the hammers, stones, and caber to do.

Took 3rd place behind John Pilling and Sean Urquart.  You haven't heard of John yet, but you will.  Future national/world champ if wants it.  Beast.

This is all I did today.  My forearms were already trashed from putting a swing set together for the prior three days.  I'm glad that's over.

I am signed up for Saline 7/13 and Dublin 8/3.  The only other game I have on my radar at this point is the north American am championships if I get invited.  Should find out soon on that one.

Saline highland games
If you are a top guy within driving distance, you need to be here next year.

3rd place overall.  Sean Urquart, Greg and John Pilling, Brandon Crawford, Justin Kaye, Jeff Armstrong.  I am really enjoying my weekends with these guys.  Only was missing Jason Thomas.

Awesome festival with tough competition.  Hot as hell.  It was a three t-shirt kinda day(I sweat a lot).

B stone  I don't recall my mark  think it was 35'ish.  23lb stone.  No real problems, just not explosive right now.

O stone 46'7"  This was very close to a PR.  I am pleased since my "glide" was more like a
"float".  Once I get some speed work in and get that left down, I expect to put a couple feet on my PR.

HWD 35'ish  felt slow, no pop.  still am glad to be over 35' three comps in a row now.

LWD  had a huge toss in warm ups(I know).  foul, 71'4", 71+.  I wanted a PR, but I'll settle for getting over 70ft again after hitting 69ft three comps in a row.  John Pilling went 77' and 80+ in extras, I took 2nd, Sean was an inch behind me at 71'3, Greg was at 69'+ for forth...8th or 9th place was over 60 feet.  9th or 10th was 59 feet.  Like I said, it was a toughy.

Caber  probably my best caber day ever.  I had clean picks, patience, and was launching the caber.  12:15, 12:15, 12:00

H Hammer  awful sauce.  I had several guys giving tips which got me thinking too much.  I don't recall the distance but I know it was low 80's.  I will be better the next time I throw this.

L Hammer  foul, 110'8, 109'.  was thinking too much on the first one as I was with HH.  I cleared my mind on the next two and had my lifetime best tosses.  PR!!!  Sean hit 110'8 as well for a PR.  I did get a good tip from Jeff that helped.

Sheaf  I hit 32' missed 34' all three attempts.  I kept hitting under the bar on the way up which is new for me.  I kept stepping further out, and still kept railing the bar.  Pissed off, I took a 4th attempt, and cleared it by a foot easily.  Too bad those don't count.

WOB  14' again.  had the height at 15' blahblahblah.  Not hitting 15' every time is frustrating.  Especially when I leave it out in front.

Overall, I was pleased with how I'm throwing right now.  Getting some things back that I lost with my back injury.  Also this week I am in the final week of a strength phase 5x1@105%, 5x3@95% last week.  Deload coming up, and speed work for the next 5 weeks.  I am hoping shit starts flying the way I want it to during this.

Next comp is Dublin Irish Fest.  It will be another toughy with Sean, Jason, Justin, Brandon all being there.

this is one of two issues:

1) pulling too early
2) not finishing the throw

the fixes:

1) wait for the wob to get to your laces before pulling. The wob is only going to 180 degrees from where you begin pulling. If you go to early it'll be out front every time.

2) pull all the way back and don't let go early. look at the bar above you as you're releasing. Throw your shoulders behind you.

without seeing video it's tough to see the exact problem, but based on those two diagnostics you should be able to figure it out for yourself. cheers.

Jake-  I was pulling too early.  I've never been told to look back at the bar though.  I'll give that try.  I planned on recording my throws, however I left my memory card in the car.  Plus Sean was hogging all the good camera real estate.  Excellent hammer vid btw.
