Hello All!

I'm a Crossfit/Strength athlete who has recently taken in interest in the Scottish Games. I'd really like to compete.  I do have a few questions:

Where are the good novice events?  I'm looking at Savannah in 2013, are there other ones?

I'm not nor have I ever been a throwing athlete: How does one learn to throw? I'll definitely be picking up a a Sorinex Ballista and "stone" slam ball.  But where do most people find space to practice? Are ther groups in Atlanta, I could meet up with?

Thanks,

Paul

Start with the VP productions videos above. Look for "The Heavies" on Youtube. The try some shot put and discus videos on You tube. Search for Randy Barnes, Werner Gunthor, John Godina, so many you can find. Mechanics are all the same. Remember the Oly events shot and wire hammer came from highland games.

Then you've got to score some weights. You can make your own, or pick a whole set up for $300 I think.

KiltBill,

Looks right up my alley, what division would I fall into too? I assume A division or B division, but not sure which.

I have absolutely no experience, but a reasonable level of strength.

It goes by experience, you would be a novice if they had that division or a B. Most games have a B division. Once you can hit 25' in the Heavy Weight for distance, 50' in the light weigth for distance, 60' in the heavy hammer and 11' in weight over bar then you can throw A's.

Where in Atlanta are you? I am in south Ga close to Tallahassee. I come up to Atlanta on business regularly. I usually carry implements with me.

Hey Guys,

I am looking for a group to train with around the Atlanta area. I live in South Buckhead. I am a former collegiate thrower, so I know can help with technique and a lot of the movements. I just need some people to throw heavy things and train with. I have a rather impressive gym in my garage we could lift at but no place to throw. Let me know if you are looking for a training partner.

I would definitely be interested.  I have not seen that many atlantan's post on here about throwing. I live in Dunwoody and we could do certain events in my backyard, mainly WOB and possibly sheaf.  The problem would be the distance events.  I was going to check out Murphy Candler Park over the weekend to see if that's a possibility.

I'm not a great thrower and would love to work with someone who's got an idea of what they're doing.

Yea that would be great, let me know about Candler park or where ever and we will go from there and start training! Do you have any throwing or weight lifting experience?

Had to postpone checking out the park, but I think I'll have time this weekend. Is there anywhere else you can think of?

I have 5 years of weightlifting experience and prob. 12 hours of throwing experience. I am currently working through Matt Vincent's program- almost done with week 1, block 1!

Paul,

I live in south Atlanta and have a full training center including towers.  I have around five years of experience and train often. I have been out for three month due to a surgery but I have been back to 100% training for a few weeks now.  If you want to get together for practice let me know.

Hi everybody.

I'm also in the Atlanta area (Dunwoody) and I am very interested in training w/ a group. I have about 15 years of weights but no experience throwing (so would need instruction). I have a pretty good general fitness level (I do the adventure racing stuff) and while I don't lift as heavy as I once did I still have good core strength.

I'm interested in possibly competing in the 40+ group but would love to train w/ just anybody to get the techniques down.
