Which has more carry over to the throws, power cleans or power snatches?  Once the weight gets heavy enough I switch to the split style for both.  Does anybody do just one and not the other?  I don't do both in the same workout, usually a couple of days apart.

The empirical data confirms Matt's observation. I did a statistical study of it some years back and the power snatch (or snatch high pull) had the highest correlation by a strong margin.

I like power cleans or more often hang cleans with a very high catch, and hang or hip snatches with various grips to either a high catch or a split. I have never even tried a split clean, and I personally do not find cleans "too messy" as long as they are caught high and solid.  However, I refuse to split my feet or go into a half squat to catch cleans or snatches anymore.  While I don't think there is anything wrong with either clean pulls or snatch pulls if you do them properly, I personally prefer to finish the lifts, as I perform them better that way.  Both lifts have their place, but if I had to choose only one for some reason, it would definitely be the hang snatch.
