Is it better to do DB push presses or BB? And I was thinking 1 arm db might be the way to go. Any opinions? |

BB is better for developing strength in the large prime movers (because
the bar is easier to stabilize), but DB is better for developing the
stabilizers.

I like the single arm heavy dbell presses in season, especially done w/ a hip drop and pop(helps balance, explosion and timing- if you can pop a 90lb dbell up and down - you got some good timing and pop) .Off-season back to normal bar or dbell - both arms.

I like the single arm DBell presses too for the reason Wayne said, it helps with the stabilizers.
deaner, it was good to meet you in Whidbey Island. Mike (the big ugly guy in the Buchanan kilt) |

Love to stand with two heavy dumbells locked out overhead. Then leave one locked out and bring the other down and do a rep. When you have that one locked out, leave it up there and bring the other down to do a rep. So you are doing one at a time while holding both but instead of leaving the resting arm at the bottom, you leave it at the top. I call them Lyttle presses, after Dave Lyttle who showed them to me. You know the cat who tosses the stone 57 feet. Super good for cuff and stabalizers. |

Nice meeting you Mike. May see me again next year, and then look out buddy! I want to do at least one down there, maybe Enumclaw. I felt a bit out of my league, do you know where they might post the results from Whidbey?

Well, Julie Riise (the AD) said, when she gets around to it,
she will post them on their website. They haven't been posted as of yet, but
here is the link to keep checking: http://www.wihg.org/

WHY do we go to the wt room...? You are almost
ALWAYS trying to stimulate MORE motor units to fire...standing on a Swiss Ball and doing gymnastic manuvers or trying to DROP under a kettle-bell WILL not improve your ability to impart more FORCE and increase V-E-LO-C-I-T-Y to throw farther...!!! I showed Dave Lyttle the stabilizer press a hundered years ago when I coached him online...this was during a Volumne Phase...GOOD luck in your training !!! |

Coach, David is one of my favorite coaches now, I am never around the guy and I don't learn something. Plus the guy knows how to have a good time. |

As general rule the more three dimensional a lift can be the better, so
by that logic DBs would be superior. DB presses will develop
strength in the prime movers just as well as BBs, as long as the
tension is comparable. At the same time DBs do force the
stabilizers to work harder.
Which one is better is probably and personal matter, try both and see how it goes. Remember that weight training is not sport specific. The goal is to get stronger, that's it. So to say one is better than the other as it applies to Highland Games does not really apply. I think the best overhead press is the BB Side Press as advocated by Pavel Tsatsouline. It is very difficult to perform, builds great pressing strength, great overall body strength and balance and is a health movement for the shoulder joint. It places the shoulder in an externally rotated position, which works all the small muscles of the rotary cuff, and requires heavy involvement from stabilizers, especially the armpit and upper back. |

I 'm guessing you're talking the bent press.
It is intense when the weights get up there and if you're in the gym people tend to stare. |
