Update: Nuthin' but throwin' and I don't see that changing anytime soon. I haven't been measuring, but I'm guesstimating that most of them have been 10-15% farther than whatever the current WR is...
Trying to increase the protein and the zzzzzs. Loon this weekend, Celtic (!) the weekend after. SOMEBODY has to make last place look cool...

9/8 Throws. Melting. Ouch. 28# single and full throws. Didn't measure, but I'm guessing they were in the 95 to 100 foot range. 42# WOB, focus on reaching back. Starting to like this weight... 9/10 Well, no sooner does the weather break then comes the rain. Probably good since I'm feeling kinda beat up from throwing. Anybody got ideas on how to practice stone without aggravating a wrist injury?Back squats up to 305#, 3x3 Snatch pulls - 205#, 5x5 |

I melted yesterday. It was awful. Had to get groceries after and I think people thought I was a serial killer.

Hey there Satch, great to hear from you! I’m focused on keeping the stone back as long as possible, but maybe it keeps me too slow out of the back. Geez, 20+ years and I’m still trying to figure all this stuff out.
9/4 Back Squats: 225# 2x5, 315# 5x3 28# weight throwing: 1 spin up to 67’ full throws up to 73’. Humidity was playing hell with my grip, grrr |

Dave great to see you posting again, just don’t call it a comeback! As for the braemar, are you thinking of lifting the stone then rotating into the throw or rotating then lifting? It is the long/short v the short/long glide technique. I see most guys trying to rotate into the throw before they lift. IMHO you should lift, extending the lower body as far as possible, keeping the stone back as long as possible....then smacking the snot out of it. Or just go for a big smack from the get go. Satch

Throws 17# Braemar Non-Reverse x5, best of 39' Fulls x8, best of 43' I've fiddled with my positions, left arm block, wider stance, opening up the hips sooner etc. over the years. But I think this is just one of those strong-or-not type events you can't finesse, you just have to go to the bad place and smack the snot out of it. LWFD 1-turns x 5, mostly around 66-67'. Fulls x 8, best of 73'. Tried to work on staying closed and using the left arm. I'm only picking up 11% or so with the 2nd spin, blech. 17# Braemar Stone Non-reverse: best of 39' Full: Best of 42.

"Re-learning" implies that actual learning took place at some point.
8/23 Power Cleans: 2 high pulls + 1 catch, up to 245# Singles w/catch up to 285#. I'm guessing this is pretty much my 1RM these days. That's about 83% of my all-time best, which is oddly enough about where my throws have been. Maybe there's something to this "strength" stuff after all?

Precisely. 8/22 245# SLDLs, 3x8. Lower back wasn't having it, so went to the park and did... 14# OS - tried the full spin again just for giggles, hit a couple near 55' or so. Huh.

Nothing much to report. Been throwing when I can, but it's been either too cold or too muddy to get a lot of quality reps in. Today I got in and did some 17/20 Hammer pulls and speed deads, trying to remember what what being fast feels like (I've given up on ever feeling strong). Working on my outfit for Arnold, I'm thinking genie pants are a given. Anybody know if they still make those inflatable Incredible Hulk muscles?

I had to share a dream I had with you and Zolk in it last night!!!
I ran into you guys in a bar and both of you had long flowing mullets that extended down to mid shoulder length!!! Yours was red and a little bushy but had a nice flow. Zolks was tight and curly. Aka Billy Ray Cyrus. You were both wearing leather vests and working on a career as a tag team in the WWE!! Awesome dream......

Recap of the last two weeks: intermittant lifting of wimpy weights, large doses of overeating. Also tried Jack Daniel's Tennessee Honey - better than I thought it would be, but think I'll stick to 101 and Old Overfelt.
On Saturday I competed in the Staples High School Barron Brothers Throwdown Classic, a semi-recurring-maybe-if-we-feel-like-it grudge match between all of the best (or worst) throwers visiting their parents' house who happen to not be too drunk at the time. Bragging rights are hyooge, and I'm happy to say that I edged out the win in three out of five events. The Red Barron got me in the braemar and open stone, I got him back in the 1-spin 28#, 2-spin 28# and 28# hammer. I also managed to thoroughly outdrink him that night - poor little guy can't hold his Overfelt!

Well I guess I can be a drunk AND an athlete at the same time, just like I was in college (and that 18 year stretch just after college). Just hope that my liver holds together. You hear me liver, hold together!
Tuesday: Hammer snatch complex, 5x6. Strict press, 5x5. Thursday: One block sprintervals, all the way to the gym and back, plus some pec deck. Sunday: Throwing! Stone, 1-spin 28#, 28# hammer. Nothing major, but it felt great to be back outside.

LOL, black pot kettle-caller. Too busy/lazy/drunk to work out this week. Thinking I might shut it down until Thanksgiving and focus on my primary objective for the Holidays.
