Guelph Highland Games
5 guys: Owen Willems, Joe Hall, Berle Conrad, Josh Kenny, John Pilling.
Nice heading back to Canada for the Weekend.  Only a little over an hour from my parents place in London, Ont.  2nd year for the Pro comp at these games. (reason for the FRs) Dean Curtis puts on a nice games.  Had a great time.

H Hammer: 104'2  FR okay no finish
L Hammer: 128' 8.5''  PR FR felt really good.  felt loose and quick.
Open Stone 16.4: 54'6'' FR  nice stone.  technique off... opening too soon.  Wasn't really worried about or into the stone on the day.
HWFD: 40' 9.5:  FR Slinging it.  super flat. Turn 1 good Turn 2 a little too closed off. nice lead weight
LWFD: 81' 11.5'' PR FR Took a super easy 77+ to open then went after it from there.Nice bruise under my thumbnail from the second attempt. Still throwing it like a discus. nice lead weight.
Rain progressively heavier until the end of the day everything wet.
Caber: 22' 90lbs: 1:00 x 2 light and a little whippy.  Not a great showing.  Kept popping off my shoulder.
WOB:  16' clean.  Tied FR Went for 16' 6'' no good.  back on track  blasted the bar 2x @ 15 before clearing it. (trying to move under the bar a little more) Felt good.
Sheaf:  23'  lol So much rain. It felt heavier than the 25 in Alma.  Bag was soaked, torn up and beginning to fall apart.  Sheaf kept hanging up on the fork and I did poorly.  Got taken to school by Berle Conrad. He cleared 25 and took home the sheaf title.
Side note:  2nd time throwing in Canada, 2nd time throwing a wet sheaf. lol
Overall 1st

ISAS Open Championship Itasca, IL(Chicago)
9 Guys:  Matt Vincent, Andy Vincent, Braidy Miller, Jeff Kaste, Nick Kahanic, Nathan Burchett, Isaac Burchett, Jeremy Gillingham, John Pilling.

Thanks to Jeff Armstrong for imviting me to Chicago.  Great festival and crowd.  Top notch bunch of guys to hang out and throw with.

Open Stone: 54’10’’   2nd. Good stone.  Consistent at the 54’ range.  Was not getting my right leg under me.  This is right where I have been all year.  On par

HWFD: 40’ something 4th? Need some work here.  My best throw was released from beside my knee.  It was probably really ugly.  It felt like it.

LWFD 80’ +  2nd. Can you say discus? (Even worse than 2 weeks ago.)  Got a good pointer form Matt V. that should help this.

HH” 102’ 1.5’’  4th. Throw one slipped out of my hands. Old gloves way too much dried spray adhesive. Put on some new hammer gloves. Throw two was the 102 and throw 3 my weight belt Velcro came undone on the first wind.  For some reason I was more worried about it falling off than throwing far.

Caber 20’1’’ 120? Who knows. 1st. 12:30 Picks were clean and easy.  Got away with a couple of slightly late pulls.  Fail on 3rd attempt.

WOB: 15’  Tie 3rd or 4th? Cleared 15’ on the 2nd attempt.  2 foot Jumps: 13', 15', 17'  My best attempt at 17' was in the 16' clearance range.

Sheaf: 30’  2nd.  New fork working well. Starting to get a good feel.  2 attempts at 31’ 6  off the cross bar.

No PRs on the day but most throws were close.  A good consistent day.

Overall 1st

Gaylord Highland Games Gaylord. MI
Demo. Was there to hang out, take some throws and watch my wife, Lindsey throw in her 1st Highland Games. This is an awesome Games put on by Jason Cherry and Dale Gehman.  9 events, lots of food and drink, great people and really cool walking/hiking sticks as awards this year.  This games was my season opener last year.  If you are looking to add a games to your schedule this is a great one to consider.
88* sunny not much shade
HH: 103'+  Bamboo handles. (I love that they open the As and Bs with Hammer at these games)
LH: They had me skip this one since I threw 2 throws off of the power wires last year.
Braemar: 25lb and not the easiest to get a hold of.  Fun stone for the games though.  36' or 37'
Open Stone: 16lb: 50'+ unable to keep it tucked so all arm.
Sheaf: Took a few throws to fill in. Everyone was out at 25' so that was the end for me.
WOB: 14' to fill in between throws  and then went for 16'6" and failed.
HWFD: 37'+ lol so terrible.  Probably should not have thrown this far.  Too much sun at this point.
LWFD: 72' same as above.  Might have thrown further on last two but decided to just keep on going through the front.
Caber: Skipped.
Looking forward to next year.

Sounds like a blast dude! Sometimes ugly braemars are fun.

Unless you need numbers, then they can suck it.

It was a good braemar.  The only time i have real issues with the braemar is when it is really rough/jagged.  I try to tuck it hard and it tears up my neck.  Not fun.

Enumclaw: North American Championships
Matt Vincent, Andy Vincent, Nick Kahanic, Dan Williams, Jake Sullivan, Spencer Tyler,  Jeremy Gillingham, John Pilling Nathan Burchett, Ryan Stewart, Rob Young, Josh Goldthorp.

I had a great weekend.  This was my first time competing in the Pacific NW.  Great weather and a great festival.  I got to meet a lot of awesome people as well.
I didn't write down all of the exact distances.  I was not sure about the winged trigs and throwing off of the turf but i actually really liked the feel and consistency of the surface.
Day 1
Open Stone 17lb: 52'+  Stone was hard to tuck, which always makes it hard for me to glide properly.  Okay with the 52+.
HH: 99'+ Felt good. I was able to get a good finish.  I wore my jav. shoes with small spikes and they kep me feet in place.
WOB: 16' 0" Clean through 15' and got 16' on my second attempt.
Caber 21/120: 80 deg.  Attempt 1 and 2 i tried speed but the caber just skipped off the ground 40 deg. on both.  Attempt 3 i slowed down for a longer pull and did better but still failed.
HWFD: 40' 4.75" Same as always
Sheaf: 28' 0"  Just wasn't flying.  I need to smooth things out.
Day 2
My right thumbnail was pretty beat up and only partially attached so i had to be very careful with any hook grip all day.  I tore it a month ago and it has grown in unattached.  At least it stayed on for the weekend.
LWFD: 79'+ on par
LH: 118'+ Felt solid
Braemar 23lb: 37'+ Could not tuck it properly and never got a hold of one.
Championship Caber:  50 Deg Fail - Picks were easy. Turning it not the same.
Championship Sheaf: 28' 0" See sheaf from Saturday.  With less energy.
Championship WOB: 15' 0" took all 16 foot attempts left handed.  Thumbnail said no after 2 attempts. Hit the bar at 16 on one of them.

Overall 4th (tied for 3rd on points. Lost the tiebreaker of most events won.  No events won, only 2nd)

Week one of five in a row complete.  Detroit up next.

Jeff, Looking forward to the Games.  Should be a great weekend.  Less than two weeks now.

Tuesday 7/29/2014
Hotel weight room in Las Vegas.  Flight delays changed up my travel home.  I ended up back at home at 2:30AM Wednesday.  It made for a long weekend.

DB Front Squat: 50x12 / 70x10 / 90x10
DB winds: 3x15 w/25 (8 each direction)
DB RDL: 3x10 @100
Mobility. Focus on core and hips.

Wednesday 7/30/2014
Close grip snatch:  WU / 165x3 / 185x2 / 215x2 / 235x2
Box Squat: WU / 5x3 @ 305
Bench: WU / 5x3 @235

Detroit Highland Games. Livonia, MI
10 Guys: Dan McKim, Matt Vincent, Mike Zolkiewicz, Jake Sullivan, John Pilling, Andy Vincent, Sean Betz, Craig Smith, Nathan Burchett, Jeremy Gillingham.

I love this Games. I threw here as an Am.my first two years. Great to throw with the Pros this time around.

O Stone 18lb3rd  52'-7" Was way open in the middle and just arming the stone.  Even though it is 18 lbs the stone is really nice and easy to tuck and throw.
LWFD:  6th  81'-5"  I felt pretty good on the day.  I did not get both feet down on 1 and two but pulled it together n 3.  75', 78' 81'.  Three guys over 85'
HH:  6th 104'-0"  Was the first thrower and opened with the 104'.  Tried to throw farther and finished with two 101"s.  I have changed to throwing without gloves and find it much more consistent on the release.
Caber  5th 19x130: 88 Just didn't get it done.  Attempt 2 was probably my latest pull of the year and i still got 80 deg.  I need to dial this in.
WOB:  Tie 5th with 4 others.16'-0" Clean.  9 guys in at 17'.  Usually 16 clean finishes a little better.

Bonus Farmer's Walk: 1st. 200 each arm:  280' something. Not great for anyone who actually trains for it or is good at it, but i am fine with the distance.   I would have preferred more weight and less distance.

Fergus Scotosh Fest and Highland Games

I got an inveite to the games two weeks ago.  I couldn't pass up a great games in the Homeland. I had an awesome weekend.  It was great weather, the competition was top notch and there was a big crowd all day.  They really took care of us in Fergus.

11 Guys:  Mike Zolkiewicz, Matthew Doherty, John Pilling, Sean Betz, Rob Young, Dave Barron, Owen Willems, Will Barron, Greg Hadley, Joel Thiessen, Neil Lowry,

Open Stone 25.2#:  40’9”  Stone was heavy and Big.  It had a slight wedge shape so I could tuck it.  Heavy Stones really mess with my glide, so I had to force the start a little.  I didn’t feel really great about the throw but was not disappointed.

HH: 103’0” Was having trouble getting it moving the way I wanted.  This is pretty much the same as every other distance all year.  There should be more there.

LH: 128’ 0’’ Felt pretty good, but was having a hitch on my right side acceleration.  My last throw was feeling good but I hit the ground hard on 2.  Was hoping to still pull out something good , but it was a 126.  No reason not to have gone farther on the day.  Great conditions, field and implement.

Sheaf:   30’ 4” SB This was right before lunch.  Most guys competed as it was not part of the overall scoring.  Everyone else was out at 29’ so i asked for 31’ to tie my PR.  The lift only went up to 30’4’’ so I went for it.  Got it on my second attempt.  Too bad it didn’t go up higher.

HWFD:  39’ 4"  Nice weight.  Lead ball with a triangle handle.  Just couldn’t get it together.  It felt like that practice where it takes 5 or so throws to figure out what is going on.  I really needed a good distance here to stay with the leaders.  Didn’t happen.  Pretty disappointed not to hit 40’

LWFD: 82’ 2.5’’ PR Same set up at HWFD. Very nice weight.   Lead ball with triangle handle.  Opened with an easy 78+.  I decided to try and get moving fast.  Throw 2 was the PR.  It felt bad, but since I was quick, it actually went somewhere.  After watching a video of the throw I really need to lift the weight not just sling it across.  My thumbnail came off on throw 2 so I had to do some handy tape work for throw three.  It didn’t help, I ended up just tearing off the top layers of the nail bed, it looked really and felt really nice.   Great part of this comp was watching both Zolkiewicz  and Doherty go 89+.

Caber 121’ 120lbs : 11:00 The caber was freshly cut.  Mike Zolkiewicz was the only one to turn the original caber, with the most of us hitting in the 40-60 deg. range.   He was given the win and the caber was cut. (Small End) 3 of remaining guys turned the cut caber.  Fist time throwing a fresh caber.

Challenge caber 18’ 160lbs. (weighed at field for the crowd)   Just wanted to try it, twice.  Don’t know my score, but it was about  45 deg. both times.  Do I have to write that this caber was heavy?

WOB: 15’0  Took me two attempts, which shouldn't happen.  At 16 I left a good throw in front of the bar on 1, just missed 2 and then blasted the bar on 3.

Overall 3rd
