The Texas Team Championship will be a two-team event hosted at the Destination Dallas Show of Strength on June 14th, 2014. In addition to Highland Games, Show of Strength will host an APF powerlifting event and an NAS strongman contest. The Texas Celtic Athletic Association is honored to be a part of this growing Texas tradition, and we will put on a show that is sure to wow the crowd!

The team sizes will be determined by applicant volume and logistics. Each team will be represented equally across three classes: Men, Women and Masters 40+. Each team will have 3 captains, one from each class. These athletes are to represent the best that Texas has to offer. Both teams will compete in the following events:

Braemar Stone
Open Stone
Heavy Weight for Distance
Light Weight for Distance
Heavy Hammer
Caber
Sheaf Toss
Weight for Height

Scores will be aggregate, and each class and thrower will play an important role for their team.

There will also be a challenge caber on hand for participants who turn the caber in their respective classes.

Application Process

Please use the registration fields at the TCAA website to apply for a chance to throw in the Inaugural Texas Team Championship:

Once you have supplied your information and application fee, you will be in the applicant pool.

The application deadline is May 15th.

Applicants will be placed on teams according to their NASGA database ranking and overall throws performance for the 2014 season within their selected class. A mathematical process will be used to select balanced teams. Our goal is to be fair and transparent in our process. The best throwers, statistically speaking, get in – plain and simple. If you would like to be considered for a class that is outside the one in which you most commonly compete, please contact Mike Beech at beechmike@gmail.com to inform him as soon as possible.

If you don't make the cut, your application fee will be refunded.

Teams will be announced by May 20th.

Eligibility

To be considered, applicants must
  • Currently reside in Texas
  • Have been born in Texas, or
  • Have lived in Texas for a total of 10 years
  • Amateurs or Pro athletes may apply and be placed on teams. Pro athletes will not have their numbers entered in the NASGA database, as this is not a true Pro event for 2014.

Captains

There will be 6 captain slots available. Each team will have 3 captains, one from each class (Men, Women and Masters (40+). The 6 statistically best applicants across these classes will be offered captain slots. If they refuse the role, the offer will be extended to the next highest-ranked athlete in that class.

Competing for Charity

Before the Championship begins, the team Captains will decide on a charitable cause that their team will be competing on behalf of. A charitable fund provided by TCAA and select sponsors will be split among the charities after the games are completed – 70% to the winners’ cause and 30 to the losers’ cause.

Highland Games - The drama is so high, because the stakes are so low.
