Here in sunny New Hampshire where we only have a foot and a half of snow on the ground in this unusually warm winter, I still have to devise training to fit the realities of jolly old New England. My wife (the genius) bought me a 30 lb medicine ball with an extra thick covering from Plyoball and an 18 lb indoor shot. I have a basketball net that I tied off and placed the med ball into and then made a duct tape handle...wfd drills and throws galore on dry asphalt and other core training throwing drills. I put duct tape and athletic tape on the outdoor shot and my driveway is a good pitch to toss the implement. Hammer swings with a 1/2 inch pipe with a phlange on the bottom and plate load to appropriate weights. If the weather is too bad to even throw on pavement I have a large piece of carpet I suspend in my carport or basement from the rafters and release the implements into the carpet. WOB can still be practiced and lifting in the basement is still relatively warm (clean and jerks/snatches/squats, etc.). Plyos...I had a stroke of genius...I take my two year old twins to a open gymnastic session and I do jumping drills on the padded floor. Just to make a point that progress can be made even when your locale or weather do not always permit optimal conditions.

Good suggestions! It's been sub-zero, with only a couple inches of snow on the ground here in MN.
How tall is your basement though?? I can't do any standing overhead stuff in mine, requiring me to lug the loaded bar and additional weights upstairs into our living room. |

Your living room? Man, you are hardcore. What about outdoors? Lifting outdoors is not as nutty as it sounds. I guess you could do overhead work seated in the basement, and you can still do pulls and squats. You could do the twisting core strengthening drills while sitting and throwing a medicine ball against the wall...get creative. Again, getting a system to do drills and throw on dry pavement is also key. An old tire works well and is cheap. Press on oh cold weather breathern! |

Unfortunately, my head is only an inch or so below the support
joists. We have a shortened height in the basement (6'4" or
so). I can do the majority of my workouts in the basement, but
anytime that there's overhead or jumping involved I need to do it in
the upstairs living room.
As to dry pavement... No go. Our driveway might as well be considered dirt, therefore I tend to let the snow pack down on it before I get out the snowblower or shovel it. Don't tell my wife, but I do WFH and WFD simulations in the living room as well. |

Maybe you can hook up with a local University, and throw with thier
indoor track team. Worked for me. They get a kick out of me throwing the weights with one hand. I tell them a great quote i got from Wayne Hill. "You need one hand free to hold your beer!!!!" Ive been throwing at University of New Hampshire once a week doing shot, 35 and 25lb weights, and doing them scottish weight style and scottish hammer style. They can show you drills and pick apart your technique really well. |

Bill, I have to work around thier schedule, but they gave me an open invite
to throw. They throw from 2-4 during the week. Im going 1 or 2 days this week if you want to make the trip down to durham? Tell me if you can make it and ill email the coach and make sure we can throw. Just once a week is making a huge difference this off season. TROB |

Where is the snow on the ground? Cold is not the problem. Snow on top of frozen ground is the problem. Looks like fun though, keep up the throwing in the bad weather.

I've found that if you let the weights sit outside all night and then grab them with slightly moist hands when you go to throw them it works just as well as tacky...maybe better.
Just make sure you retrieve your skin along with the weight. Edited by Tim Pinkerton |

Wayne, What fun is throwing a hammer without something to aim for? The smashing sounds of fences breaking make the hammer that much more fun! |

Unusual weather out West...100-year rain brought
on snow down too 2,500 feet elevation... flooding and mud slides...! Our major complaint the last couple of days are "finding" sunblock and this years "hot" new sunglass styles as it hit 86-degree's yesterday....(boo-hoo) Anyone have a deal on the new Oakleys (with the built in MP-3 player)...? I like to listen to music while I sweat...
Have a GREAT Day! mac~ |

I don't think the truck is far enough if Dan loads up. But I agree with Roy.
