Sntach-Grip High Pulls (to clavicles, in lbs.) - 135x5x2, 165x5, 185x3, 205x3x10 (very explosive)

As stated before, I really like this exercise!

Biggest discus comp of the year in a week and a half. Only second one and possibly the last one, although ideally not.

Overhead Shot Toss with 4.5k (in m) - Best 5 of 16 hard tosses were 18.94, 18.67, 18.60, 18.55, 18.51 - rest were 18.00+

This was basically a warm-up, as I felt I really needed a good warm-up before throwing the discus.

Discus (2k) - 5 warm-up throws and about 20 full thows - did not go so well today, with throws ranging from 36m to perhaps 41m with a foot fault, and the average roughly 38m. Just not there today.

We do not stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing.

Friday, July 4

Late afternoon, after an early start to the day. Starting to wind down physically.

Was planning to throw discus, but I needed a good warm-up and the circle needed to dry out a bit from a bit of rain.

Overhead Shot Toss with 4.5k/10lbs. (in m) - a decent number of warm-up tosses, then 10 measured throws. Best 5 were 19.82/65'0", 19.76, 19.48, 19.44, 19.40, with an average of 19.58.

At this point I realized I did not have time to start throwing discus! Tomorrow!

Quick session shortly after dinner. No time to go throw discus, which is what I should be doing, so...

Overhead Shot Toss with 4.5k (in m) - several warm-up tosses, then 8 measured throws, in order: 18.81, 19.05, 18.85,  18.91, 18.64 (high), 18.70, 18.70, 19.80/64'11.5" (almost ideal throw)

Left it at that, as I had to go.

Once again, not enough time to actually go throw discus unfortunately.

Overhead Shot Toss with 16# - decent number of warm-up tosses then 8 measured throws, as follows (in m): 15.36, 15.59, 15.66/51'4.5", 15.51, 15.42, 15.55, 15.35

Overhead Shot Toss with 4.5k/10#(in m) - no warmup tosses - 18.97, 19.20, 19.80, 19.17, 19.54, 19.29, 19.62, 19.97/65'6" (so close to 20.00m!!!)

Not a great week for proper training! Timing issues. Something is better than nothing. Far from ideal.

Right after a good lunch that included a hard cider...

Overhead Shot Toss with 4.5k - a decent number of warm-up tosses, then about a dozen hard tosses. Best was 19.57m/64'2.5". Average of top 5 throws was just 19.40m. All throws were over 19m.

Thursday, July 10

See above for lame disclaimer.

16# Overhead Shot Toss - several warm-up tosses then 8 hard tosses - best of 15.96m/52'4" (71 pts.), average of top 5 was 15.86m (70 pts.)

4.5k Overhead Shot Toss - just a few tosses - best of 20.09m/65'11", which is Season's Best, at least.

Shawn, this is the Quadrathlon score for that event. It is a way to measure your performance in this against a universal, objective standard, fwiw.

A few years ago we did some "Triathlon" Testing with a couple dozen guys, which was interesting, but it sort of fizzled. I can find the thread easy enough if you are curious.

I have pretty much given up on the possibility of actually throwing the discus this week, despite the fact that that is ALL I should really be doing this week. Anyway...

16# Overhead Shot Toss (in m) - warm-ups +15.62, 15.55, 15.52, 15.68, 15.53

4.5k OHS (in m) - 19.08, 19.42, 19.10, 19.36, 19.52 (felt good), 19.35, 19.42

Sunday, July 13

Threw discus at the Canadian Masters T&F Championships. Started throwing FIVE hours late!!! Best throw was just 38.95m. Very close series for me with a couple of hard fouls. Was very "close" to throwing much further but just not there! Obviously more practice and ideally some coaching would be VERY helpful! Very disappointed with this result, and curious what might have happened without such a lengthy delay.

Later that afternoon. Felt like tossing, but energy was down.

12# Overhead Shot Toss (in m) - warm-ups + 17.42, 17.61, 17.26, 17.30, 17.12, 17.22, 17.44, 17.10

Not great. "Should be" 18.00m+, but obviously not an ideal time.

Seems like a long time since I have squatted! The top sets were harder than expected!

Evening Session

12# Overhead Shot Toss (in m) - warm-ups +12 tosses. Top 5 were 18.02, 17.63, 17.63, 17.58, 17.47 with a top 5 average of 17.67

Monday, July 21 - morning

Paused Back Squats (3 second pause at rock bottom, in pounds) - 45x8, 135x5, 185x5, 225x3, 255x3, 285x3, 315x3x3

Noon session

On my very last toss, I managed to strain my left hand forearm extensor at the instant I started to explode from the bottom position. Very odd. I have NEVER done anything remotely like that before! Zero bruising am minimal swelling so I hope it is no big deal.

Hang Snatch-Grip High Pulls (up to mid-chest, in lbs) - 45x5x2, 95x5, 135x5, 155x5, 175x5, 195x5x6

Left lower arm still bugging me a bit, but not really an issue doing these today, which was a great relief. I believe the issue is an irritated nerve vs. a miuscle strain anyway. Hope/expect it should be fine by next week.

Friday, August 1

Low back/SI joint was feeling tight from sitting in a compromised position a bit too long just before workout, so I decided to go light but with a long pause and extremely slow eccentric. MUCH more tiring this way!!! Back should be a non-issue tomorrow.

Paused Slow-Eccentric Front Squat (5-5-x-1 tempo, in lbs) - 45x5, 135x5, 185x3, 225x3x8

Saturday, August 2 - 9:00am

As expected, back was a non-issue and arm continues to improve significantly.

Mid-Grip Hang Snatches (minimal dip at catch, in lbs) - 45x5x2, 95x5x2, 115x3x2, 135x3x6

Can still feel forearm but no issue at all. Should be close to 100% by next week.

Not sure if I missed logging a session earlier in the week at this point? If so, it was nothing special anyway.

Cottage action for a couple more days, which included lots of jumping rope and band pull-aparts. I am going to start doing a lot more of these kinds of things.

Thursday, August 14

Hang Snatch-Grip High Pulls (from rack, up to mid-chest, in lbs) - 45x8x2, 115x5x2, 155x5, 175x5, 195x3, 205x3x10

Friday, August 15

Was intending to Front Squat, but ended up just doing some loaded carries and a lot of jumping rope. No issues, that is just how things worked out today.

Have not lifted since last update, but have done a few sessions of jumping rope a lot, and few days of sprint accelerations, which need to be treated carefully when just getting back into them, especially at my age. Like many things, I am not quite sure how they dropped out of my training for so long during the good weather months.

Tuesday, August 26 , 6:30 am

Hang Snatch-Grip High Pulls (up to mid-chest, in lbs) - 45x5, 95x5, 115x5, 135x5, 155x5, 175x5, 195x3x12

9:30 am

Modified Strongman circuit done at a relaxed pace but hard effort. Need to do a lot more of this stuff!

Wednesday, August 27

Paused Front Squats (slow eccentric, 3 second pause at rock bottom, in lbs) - 45x5x2, 135x5, 185x3, 225x3, 255x3 - got inturrupted after that, but it might have been enough for first squat session in 20 days (!!!)

Jumping Rope - 10 sets of 100 jumps, performed very quickly, with good recovery between sets. I am getting good at this now and my legs (calves and achilles) are starting to adapt to the stress involved.

Sprint Accelerations - over about 50m, starting fairly slowly and bulding in speed over the distance to a very fast pace for a short distance at the end. First attempt was very easy and relaxed throughout and increased intensity from there. Built up to one that felt very fast at the end with no issues and felt great at the end.

Unfortunately I decided to do one more (although I did feel great with no issues at all and had only done ONE really hard, brief effort). Really went for it and was feeling great until just a few meters before I was going to stop, when my hamstring pulled with ZERO warning. Ugh! Hopefully better in a few days. No discolouration or disfigurement at all, but very sore rest of the day and this morning.

I was literally discussing the need to proceed cautiously immediately before I started the sprints! So easy to get caught up in things when they are going well, although as I said, I was not feeling ANYTHING negative until the second it happened, and the volume completed was very limited.
