Spent the past three days listening to four top T&F (primarily) coaches talk about training, primarily the development of speed, power, and strength while avoiding injuries and over-training. Three of these men have coached Olympic gold medalists along with World Champions, while the fourth coached an Olympic finalist and British record holder. Great experience.

Today:

Power Cleans (onto virtually straight legs at catch, in lbs.) - 135x5x2, 185x5x2, 215x3x2, 235x3x10

Back was a bit tight at the start, but no issues at all.

At Parkour gym with the boys. Worked up to my usual max of jumping up 5 stairs from a 24" single-step approach numerous times, along with jumping up 4 stairs from a static squat position numerous times. 6 steps will be mine soon if I bother to go for it!

These felt good but I could tell any heavier was going to get ugly today, so I just did lots of sets for practice.

Feeling a bit blah today. Nothing more than that. TOO long since my last workout? Definitely not quite enough sleep recently either.

Paused Front Squats (2 second pause at rock bottom, with ZERO "psyching up", in lbs) - 45x6, 95x6, 135x5, 185x5, 225x3, 255x3, 285x2, 315x1, 335x1 (this was hard but perfect), 300x2x5 (90 percent of today's max)

Monday, December 8, evening session

At the Parkour gym with the boys. Legs felt a bit stiff after this afternoon's workout, but I worked up to my usual max of 4 steps from a stand, which was not a problem. I did not bother to attempt 5 steps, which I usually do from a single step approach, in any manner.

Wednesday, December 10

Back Squats (full depth, in lbs) - 45x8, 135x5, 185x5, 225x5, 275x3, 315x3, 345x2, 365x2, 385x1, 395x1, 335x3x3

I assumed the 395 was going to be hard, but it went up very fast. I defiintely got "motivated" for this lift, which was done completely alone and with zero supportive gear (as always). Did not feel like going to 405 today. Legs were a bit stiff and tired and erectors were actually a bit sore from Monday's session. 405 will happen next hard Back Squat session, and 425 soon enough. 335 is 85% of 395 and they all went up smooth and fast with a hard effort.

Late night and tired legs, but when I take my son to the Parkour gym, I jump, so I worked up to my usual max of 4 stairs from a stand, which was very easy, and 5 stairs from a 24" single-step approach, which was also very easy once I worked up to it.

I did not mention it in my previous post because I thought it would be nothing but a cramp, but it seems that during my last jump (because of this) I strained one of my abdominal muscles somehow despite not having any problems at all with the jump (top left, right at the insertion of my ribcage). I must have just been a bit stiff and jerked a bit instead of being smooth and relaxed. As I said, I just felt like a muscle cramp at the time. After I cooled down, I did not feel it at all until I tried to lift a weight from the morning, when it became very obvious I had actually done some damage. I tried to lift a bit very carefully anyway, until it became obvious that I should stop. I should probably not have done anything at all, or at least done a hang variation.

Snatch-Grip High Pulls (up past mid-chest, in lbs) - 135x5x2, 165x5, 185x5, 205x3x3 (wanted to do more but realized I should stop).

The issue with my ab/intercostals, which was never formally diagnosed or treated, seems to be about 95% better, but this has taken TWO WEEKS, an eternity (to me) given the (barely understood and totally unexpected) nature of the injury.

Hang Cleans (minimal dip at catch, in lbs.) - 45x8, 95x6, 115x6, 145x5, 165x5, 185x5x6

These were all very smooth, easy, and pain-free, but I figured this was enough intensity and volume for my first workout in two weeks and given the fact that the injury is only about 95% healed. Still very pleased and relieved to be training again at all!

Monday, December 29 - morning

Hang Cleans (minimal dip at catch, in lbs.) - 45x8, 95x5, 135x5, 155x5, 175x5, 195x5, 215x3x5 (no issues at all), 185x5x5 (very smooth and fast)

No issues at all with any of these, although I will likely be sore.

Afternoon

Finally able to do some easy and cautious jumping at the Parkour gym. Jumped up 3 steps onto straight legs from stand, full squat, and single-step approach with no issues, as well as onto a 30" box landing in a high quarter squat, but I was still scared to forcefully raise my knees, probably for good reason. Much better than nothing and hopefully fully healed soon.

Snatch-Grip High Pulls (to clavicles, in lbs) - 45x8, 115x5, 145x5, 165x5, 185x5x10

Felt good and fast, with no pain in injured spot (although I could sometimes feel it a bit). The volume felt good, but I expect to have sore traps and maybe erectors tomorrow! Hope to start squatting again in a couple of days.

Legs and back are just a touch sore today, which is nice.

Did some cautious jumping at the Parkour gym today. Felt much better, although not still not 100%. I was able to work up to jumping up 4 steps from a stand and very easily from a single step. I did not bother to attempt 5 steps today. Very encouraging. Next week!

No ill-effects at all from yesterday's jumping session, so back to the Parkour gym I go with my son.

I quickly work up to 4 stairs from a stand and a single-step approach, which are easy and comfortable, and then do several jumps up 5 steps for the first time since my injury. No issues. Afterwards I move to a box, and quickly work up to 41.5", which is easy and comfortable. I then jump onto 43", which I make with no problem but after which I feel my injured area just slightly, so I leave it there for the day. Encouraged. Three full weeks from injury to 99% recovered.

We do not stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing.
