Thursday 30th
Shot drills. Feeling pretty good getting the sweep round pretty well feet are feeling quick. De used to start bringing in front press and front squat primarily as I am weak as piss in the shoulders at the moment and enjoy doing front squats. Front press 5x5@80kg definitely needing to do loads more of this I should be doing 120-140kg. Front squat 5@80kg 5@90kg 5@110kg 2x5@120kg first three sets were straight forward last two sets were comfortable but tough. I will need to do 120kgfrom the off. I hold the bar as if I have just cleaned it but I need to get a more flexibility back. Finished off with usual lat pulldowns, tricep pulls, bicep curls, straight arm dumbbell flies. I have been trying to do 50 crunches 50 side to sides and 50 chinees along with general flexibility stretches at home. Been on the ball so far. Saturday I have pyramids and if weather holds get some throws in too. |

Saturday 1st
Shot drills. Felt a little bit off on this today was struggling to get things going but it got better towards the end mainly 360 balance and full drills trying to hold the chest up and sweep in quick. Snatch pyramid 6@60kg 5@67.5kg 4@72.5kg 3@77.5kg and 2@82.5 kg with straps. Sets up to 77.5 were reasonably good and I got the 82.5 first time but the quality wasn't there. More work required. Straight leg deadlift pyramid from deficit 6@100kg 5@110kg 4@130kg 4@140kg 3@150kg. Was really trying to figure out how comfortable I am at certain weights. The reps don't include a normal deadlift from deficit before starting the straight leg works. They felt good but as I write this my hamstrings are noticeably tight. I think I will be starting from 140kg on this next week. Squats Warm up 60/100/140kg 6@180kg, 5@190kg, 4@200kg. Cut this short was low on time and my legs were feeling done at this point as I was goin to watch the rangers. Quality on what I done was good. Monday I hope to get somewhere where I can get a full putting session in for timing purposes. It may have to be the indoor arena or something. |

Havent posted in a couple of weeks.
Been moving back to 5x5s
Been steady at 180 and 70 in the squat and snatch on the Tuesday session upped that to 185 and 72.5 this past thursday and was feeling good though tough as I am coming off a cold.
Been getting better at front press though its still a bit wishy washy and front squats have been steady at 120 though will need to up them a little.
The last few pyramid sessions have been very good got an 87.5 snatch yesterday and upped the striahgt leg deficit deadlift with 190 although squat is feeling tough knees are a bit tender just now.
Managed to get a couple of putting sessions only stands as work has been busy and the weather has been rubbish. I need to get shit loads more in.
Been drilling every session and it is starting to feel good in the putt and the wfh drills.
Need to throw throw throw.
Weight around 280lb at the moment.

Haven't posted in ages due to one thing or another.
Season has been a bit hit and miss with everything a little down on my best. However my caber has been the best it has been for about four years. I have managed to turn a couple of cabers I have been trying to turn for a good ten years or so. I have had a couple of weeks off and had first session back tonight. Nothing strenuous. Body weight of 284lbs or 20st 4lb Started with 15mins on bike and hitting 7.5k in distance in the time. Then done 4x10 30kg a side dumbbell bench 3x10 7.5kg straight arm raise followed by 3x10 @2.5kg bottom to top straight arm raise mimicking hammer orbit. 3x10 12.5kg dumbbell curl 3x10 bar twist immediately followed by 10 incline sit-ups 6 15m length walks with 15kg plate swinging side to side. Tomorrow I plan to do my barbell complex. Plan is to do a couple of weeks general fitness then start strength endurance phase. My only issue is that I have kid no2 due in November so the intended training plan may be scuppered this year. |

Just seen that it has been well over a year, nearly two since I posted. Two kids and working on one if the big projects in the UK electricity system has taken its toll on my games activities. I have had to move gym to spend more time with family and time to train/throw has been quite limited. 2015 season was very short as I felt I was just turning up for a throw and not as competitive as I would like.
Winter training has been okay. I can't go mental in the work gym with heavy Olympic lifts and squats. Static lifts have been okay with a 240 dead lift, 160 bench with a pause but only 200 in the squat. Had the Kuala Lumpur games last weekend before last and in high heat and humidity I threw pretty well. Hammer and putt needs to improve. This season will be around 10 or 12 games with some track and field meets thrown in. This weeks training was a shot session on Monday. Felt good need to keep the feet moving and get the ball working at the front. Thursday training was 10 mins on the bike followed by. 35kg dumbbell snatch 3x6 each hand. 25kg seated dumbbell alternate press 3x8. 12.5kg straight arm dumbbell flies, 40kg lunges 2 sets of front, diagonal and side lunges. Finished with 2 sets if 20kg bar twists, side lunges with bar. Straight arm lift with the bar and hammer winds using 10kg plate. Yesterday. 3x6 62.5kg snatch followed by 30kg dumbbell snatch . 100kg bench 3x6 followed by 20kg seated alternate dumbbell press all followed by the same abs circuit I done on Thursday. Bathgate games are next weekend and I hope to get some throws in tomorrow followed by throwing Monday, superset lifts on Tuesday and the session I done on Thursday this coming Thursday or some throws. |

Putt and 28lb last night. Weather for Glasgow is very good at the moment. Standing putts. Worked on staying torqued as much as I could be fore unwinding into the putt. Felt pretty good, distance not massive but it is a good base to start from. Definitely the best I have felt thus far this season. Just need to remember to keep the elbow up and try and initiate the throw from the legs.
Full throws were a bit hit and miss. the first few I was blocking quite a lot (thats how it looked from the gravel marks) Not done enough full throws to keep the feet placement consistent. I need to keep oon trying to ge the feet down quick at the front and work the ball like I am in the standing putts. best distance so far but I feel another 3 feet is easily achievable. 28lb only done around 6 throws. Hand is not quite fully healed from KL. Throwing from 9ft circle over the next few weeks so tried to keep myself within the nine foot. First turn is feelign tight but second turn I need to not let the left foot drift long as I will fould the throw. I have ben working on trying to keep the weight long by casting out and keeping on pushing out as much as I can. Need to do a few throws with the stop board to see how it feels. Hopefully lift tonight but it might be a throwing session instead.

Yesterday managed a small lifting session.
10 minutes on exercise bike with increasing difficulty. Lifting was supersetting 3x6@60kg snatch followed by 30kg dumbell snatch x3 each arm. 3x6@100kg bench followed by 20kg seated dumbell press alternate arm 6 reps a side. Minute and a half rest after each set with a bit longer between snatch and becnh. Finished with core work with 2 sets of the following. 20kg bar twists 10 a side 20kg side to sides with the bar 20kg bar striahgt arm raise x8 10kg hammer twists 10 swings a side. Bathgate games this weekend. Stone putt, shot putt, 28 wfd, 56wfh and caber. Looking to throw well in the weight over the bar, if I can get 13ft with the weight which is a thick handle and quite dour then I will be going some I have done a lot of snatch and dumbell snatch so the lifts shoudl transfer into the throw. Was hoping to get a throwing session in after Monday but work and family commitments put paid to that.

Had my first home competition on Saturday at Bathgate Games. Finished 5th overall in a tough field that was won by Kyle Randalls who is starting to become a force to be reckoned with in Scotland.
25lb Standing Stone Putt: 9.64m (31ft 7.5i) 4th. Didnt feel too bad though I struggled to get a decent drive or torque befor ethe release. Also felt I was pulling away too early before the reverse. 16lb Shot: 12.89m (42ft 6i) 4th. This was a bit frustrating. I tend to turn quite gingerly at the moment to make sure I dont slip before the drive but this comes at the expense of generating speed at the start ofthe throw. All throws were in sector and I stayed in. Last throw felt the best but i popped it high a bit too much. 28lb wfd: 18m37 (60ft 3i) 6th. This was quite frustrating as I had been feeling good in this. I didnt feel quick or sharp at all. All throws doiwn the middle and no issues with staying oin on the circles. Need to work this a good bit more. I know I can get it up to 21.5-22 metres. WFH 13ft: 5th equal. I had been looking forward to this most of the day as the trainign I have been doing has lent itself to this. 11, 12 and 13ft were all easily cleared. I got to 13ft 6i and three times I grazed the bar and it came off. The stands at this games are quite forgiving and a few of the guys gave the bar a good clatter and it stayed on. I need to work on trying to get more acceleration and power into the weight. Caber 80deg 5th. I had hoped of gettign this particluar caber over but I came just short again. I am not getting enough of a pull on the caber and I think I am hittign it a smidge late along with taking a bit too long to stop before the pull. Need to work on quicker execution. Overall I would give myself 6 out of 10 for the competition. I probably shouldnt have done anything on Friday but felt I had to get a little bit of throwing in. SChoolboy error and one I usually dont make. Next week is Shotts where I won my first ever games. It hasnt been that kind to me where I have had all sorts of issues with the caber there. We have the return of the hammer which I plan to work on a little this week. Went and watched Carmunnock Games on the SUnday and Lukasz and Scott Rider are going to be hard to beat this season.

Threw Monday 30th. Only done the shot and it did not feel good. Don't know why but I have never thrown well on the Monday after a competition. Probably thinking too much about where I can improve and work on or still fatigued. The feeling was almost there on the stands but no snap or drive. Full throws tried to keep the chest up and drive. Some attempts were better than others but wasn't getting feet into the right position. Something to be worked on for sure.
Lifted today. Thought I might have got some throws in but had too much work to do. Done super sets of snatch 60kgfollowed by dumbbell snatch. 3 sets of 6 with a minute and a half rest. Worked on trying to get a bit more rip with the arm after getting the full extension. Benched 105kg for 3x6 followed by sitting dumbbell press with 20kg a side. Bench felt okay but dumbbell press was a bit laboured. I'll drop this to 17.5 on next session. Done 2 sets of lunges with 40kg with 7 reps a leg. Finished with 2 sets of the core circuit I have been doing recently. Will try and get some putting in tomorrow followed by some hammer swings. That is if the youngest will go to sleep bey 8pm. |

Threw on Thursday shot, 28 and some hammer winds. Shot was much better compared to Mondays. Need to keep the feet hitting the right position and start work the legs more. 28 felt okay and just need to keep it long and keep it moving. Hammer winds weren't too bad just trying to keep the orbit correct.
Saturday I had Shotts Games. Finished 5th overall and a bit of a mixed bag. 16lb hammer. 31.30m. Swings felt okay here ans although distance wasn't great it was better than I was expecting. I need to work release and try and quicken the winds especially the last. 16lb shot. 12.75m first time I have had a throwing shoe on the right foot at a games in years. My spikes were just digging in with no give with two shoes on. Throws we're just too slow. 28wfd. 18.90m. Had a good first throw but went out of sector. Second throw one of the judges decided I had to wait before I throw she needed to run through the sector and that put me off. Final throw was best but didn't have fluency of the first. Wfh. 12ft 3i Bit disappointed I had hit the bar at 13ft 3i but it didn't feel as good as last week. Don't think I was getting enough out the legs. Still not getting enough of the body into the throw before I pull with the arm. Need to get a video on this. Caber. 3 mins to. This has been a nemesis here as I have failed this one the last couple of years. Get the first attempt over at 10 mins to. Second I slightly mistimed and only got it on end. Last attempt was one of the best timed hits I have had in a while. Overall a 6 out of 10 for me the distance throws I need to work on more this coming week which will be difficult as I have a busy week at work coming up. Next event is Ardrossan next Sunday. No hammer but a standing putt instead. |

Tuesday 6th trained at the gym. Wasn't expecting to get to train as I am working on a big fault at work and Tuesday was the test day to make sure the new cable is good. The testing went quicker than expected so off to the gym I popped.
10 mins on exercise bike 100rpm going about 110-110bpm. 100kg squat jumps on smith machine 3x6 followed by double tap jumps. The squat felt good the double tap jump not so good. 3x8 standing dumbbell press 20kg a side of speed. 3x6 a side35kg one handed dumbbell snatch. Felt okay need more drive in the legs. Finished off with core set with 15kg plate side to side followed by side dips and hammer twists with 10kg and straight arm raises from the side with 7.5kg dumbbells. |

Thursday 9/6/16.
Done a lot of walking about at work today. Weather has been in the 20's Celsius and has been for the last couple of weeks. I felt a bit stiff. Anyway done some putting this evening. Standing puts were a bit iffy. Not getting enough torque in before release. Reverse throws were next and I am still reversing a bit early and not getting enough in the throw. Moved onto full throws and tried to get the feet placement right and also focus on a better sweep before the drive to the front. Was starting to get there but I need a lot more work. I must keep the feet turning before release. I don't think I am too far away, I need to quicken up and get the timing better. Might try and get a throw in tomorrow if possible. Ardrossan games are on Sunday and it is braemar, shot putt, 28wfd, 56wfh and caber. |

Ardrossan games were yesterday and it was a mixed bag.
Standing putt was off it was an awkward stone for me and I never managed to keep on it enough threw about 9.80. Shot was next and the ground had a bit more give than Shotts. Felt I was getting the sweep better but I am not finishing it off as I would like at the front. I don't think I was far away from a good throw. Finished with 12.57. 28wfd next. Felt a bit quicker this week than last week but it seemed to die on me. Last attempt felt the best but didn't manage to finish it off. Need to get the acceleration better into the second turn and really work on finishing it off. 18.22 Wfh. This weight is a bit longer than last weeks. 11' and 12' were easy enough. 13' I failed the first two attempts and got it on the third. This killed me on count back. 14' first attempt was close but second was nowhere near and third hit the bar but didn't have the height. I reckon 13'6" was on. Caber we done one attempt at the qualifier and twin the big one. Only a couple of guys got it over some just. I however got it up on end then it fell back so game over. Need a bit more speed in travel. Overall another 6/10 assessment. Need to try and work speed and get more throwing in. This week should be much better as the fault I have been is fixed and I can concentrate on my normal job which should mean more time to train. Next Saturday lesmahagow then a break from competing till mid July. |

Tuesday 14th June
Just lifting today, almost never made it due to some of the works i have been involved in but I got to the gym and here is hoping. Snatch 3x6@60kg followed by 30kg dumbell snatch x3 each hand. 1 min 30 rest between sets. This wasnt feeling too bad but I need to start upping the weight in the snatch itself I feel. Bench 3x6@105kg followed by alternate standing dumbell press with 20kg for 6 each hand. This felt fairly slow and I need to try and up the pace. I might need to drop the dumbell weight to 17.5kg to keep the speed element up. Jump Squat 3x6@100kg followed by 5 jumps. This was on the smith machine and I was working more on gettign full triple extension as best I could along with the jumps. I could probably go 110 or 120kg as the speed was pretty good on the smith machine. Followed with 2 sets of core work. bar twists, side to sides with the bar over my shoulder, straight arm lifts of the bar and hammer twists. 10 reps each side on each exercise. Overall this session felt not too bad as I was still feeling a bit stiff from Sundays throwing. Looking to get some throwing/drills in Ednesday and the same on Thursday followed by some sprints. Rest on Friday then throw on Saturday.

Left knee started playing up on Wednesday night whilst in a restaurant so took things easy until today.
Lesmahagow games were today. Weather was great, ground reasonably good but a bit of moisture present. Shot. 12.77m for third. The placements felt good. Could have rotated and drove better. Definitely need to get release better. No issues staying in. 28 wfd. 19.14m for third. Feet placement felt good. Felt quicker too. My best throw felt like a bail out. I seemed to stay on my left leg longer and it felt longer although the release if it was better would have went 20m. Hammer. 28.80m for fifth. This is my real weak point at the moment and it kills me in points comps. Swings although I seemed to hit the right orbit didn't have the fluidity and it was the same for release. Need to get the hammer swings going more and really work on a smooth and sharp release, Wfd. 12ft. 2nd equal First time clearance. 13ft hit bar three times. It is the same weight as bathgate and I struggle with it. Caber. 45deg. 3rd or 4th. 18ft long and weighed about 80kg. Only Neil got over. Overall 5 out if 10. Hammer dragged things down |

Lifting tonight. Given I have about four weeks till the next competition I would try and get some strength training in rather than super setting. I will do this for a couple of weeks then return to fitness/super setting. Squat 1x8@110kg, 1x6@125kg, 1x4@140kg, 1x3@155kg. Minute or so rest in between. This was done on the smith machine so I focused on depth as much as I could. These felt good though the core strength isn't quite where I want it too be. I need to do more squatting as my knee seems to play funny buggers when I don't squat for awhile. Bench 1x8@100kg, 1x6@110kg, 1x4@120kg, 1x3@130kg. Minute or so rest I between. The heavier weights felt fairly slow and although I got the sets out okay I need this to be at least 20kg more for the reps I am doing. Finished with two sets of ab work with hammer twists, straight arm bar raises, oblique crunches with the bar and side to side twists with a 10kg plate. This was done in about 35 minutes. |

SHort on time due to the Refernedum vote and the missus going out. However I felt I needed to get a lttle fitness works in. Done a little circuit training outdoors. Warmed up with some light jogging, stretching and some swings of the sledgehammer and overheads with my shot. y legs have been a stiff for the last few days so took a while to limber up. I done two sets of the following. 10 hammer swings a side, 30m jog, 10 burpees, 30m jog, 10 O/H shot throws, 15 press ups, 30m jog, 10 alternate leg squat thrusts a side. Tried to keep the rest as little as I can and it was feeling okay. My only thing is that my burpees and swuat thrusts are with my hand placement on something higher than ground level to prevent pressure on the knees. |

Done a little bit of training at work today. Again mainly fitness work as I dont have my implements as the car is in getting fixed. STretched and limbered up then done some light jogs 40mx3, 3x high knees for about 20m then light jog, 3x heel flicks with a light jog afterwards. Then done a small circuit with 20m jog, 10 burpees, 20m jog, 20 chinees, 20m jog then 10 alternate leg squat thrusts. Tomorrow I hope to get to do some throwing down in Dumbarton with probably some snatch thrown in for good measure. Was maybe dgoing to do a games tomorrow but I think some proper training is requried.

Trained down at Dumbarton for the first time in a couple of months. Weather was good and I decided to do shot out the circle. Done a fair bit of limbering up and done some overhead and underarm shot along with some hammer type releases. A couple of the lads from the gym are doing the locals in a few weeks and joined in with me. My throwing went not too bad. Standing throws didn't feel to bad but didn't quite have the snap I would like. Full throws felt okay but my feet placement needed to be better. Release was a bit meh so I need to work on getting more torque and try and get the snap back. Finished off with 6x30m runs along the javelin run up. Did a bit of work with guys as we'll with the putt and the 28. Trying to not fry their head with lots of things to work on is hard. With the put I just tried to get them to work on a solid left hand side and stay on the throw and the 28 was feet placement especially the first turn. All in all a not bad session. |

Had just a little time to get some lifting in today at the gym. Still working on getting a little bit of base strength back up. Back Squat on smith machine. 6@100kg, 4@120kg, 3@140kg, 3@160kg, 2@180kg, 2@200kg. Abouty a minute or so between sets. Worked on depth on this lift and it felt pretty good. Would have been good to do it from a rack but it seems to have disappeared. Bench press. 6@100kg, 4@110kg, 3@120kg, 2@130kg, 1@140kg with about a minute or so rest in between. These felt better than I was expecting but it is still some way off where I would like to be in terms of weight but it is getting there. Core work was bar twists x10 a side, side to sides with the bar, striahgt arm raise with the bar to over head x10 and hammer swings with 10kg plate x10 a side for two sets. Getting a bit frustrated with the lack of time I am getting to train at the moment. I woudl like to get some things done when the kids are in bed but with the youngest deciding she is not going down till half eleven at night I cant do anything. Hopefully today I will get some circuit training done.

Just had time to do a shot putt session. Standing throws are starting to get there. Trying to get the hip through as much as I can before release. The last few fixed throws felt good. Reverse throws I tried to hold the throw as long as I can before reversing. Was starting to get there. Full throws were a mixed bag. Wasn't driving as well as I would like. I also had a problem with feet positioning as I was blocking g way too much. I started to try and focus on feet position and keep the feet turning. Was starting to get there but I need more throwing. Paced over 13m but still a long way to go. |

Just back from a weeks holiday with the wife and kids. Managed to get some training in but the facilities aren't the best for high intensity work. However, over the week I was in the pool a few times mainly keeping an eye on the kids and a couple of sessions in the gym where done the following.
15 mins on the exercise bike. 6x10 of squat followed by behind neck press with 40kg and a minutes rest in between and two sets of crunches, chinees and side to sides. Had a couple of nights out with retirements and a wedding reception. Now I am needing to sort things out a little with my diet and training regime. I plan initially to go to October without any more alcohol and really try and focus on eating a healthier breakfast rather than rolls and sausage which I have been doing recently. I also plan to try and cut the coffe intake also. |

Was working in the office on my return from holiday and decided to head to the nearest track about 10 minutes drive away to do a shot putt session off concrete. This is the first time I have thrown at a proper track for a long time. Started with some overhead shot and although distance wasn't great the feeling wasn't too bad. Standing putts x6 with no reverse felt okay but I wasn't getting the hip in enough nor was I getting the shoulders square to the back of the circle before starting the throw. General flexibility is the issue here. Reverse throws x6 felt better than usual probably due to the fact I am able to utilise the stop board rather than jumping out after it there isn't one there. These felt better the more I threw. The full throws x12 felt way better than I was expecting. The first six or so the legs felt like they were working and I was getting some fluidity in the throw. I was throwing down the middle and I had no issues with blocking the throw or staying in which seemed very unusual. The last six throws were competition feeling and I got 4 out the six as good throws. with fouls being the first and third throws. I had to work myself into the competition and I tried to get the cadence quicker at the front of the circle and really try and work the throw at the front. In the main it went well. Things to improve on is the flexibility over the next while and try and work on fast feet. I plan to do another session at the track on Friday when I hope to be at the office again. There is a number of games on Saturday but I am thinking of doing my first athletics competition in a couple of years. If I can get a 13.50 throw out there on Sunday then I will enter the Scottish Athletics Champs and try and get 14m. I hope to get some circuits or sprints in tonight after I get the kids to bed. Tomorrow will be lifting and ill go back to 3x6 with a superset. |

Didn't manage to get to the gym due to work commitments so ended up doing a small quick fitness session after getting the kids down. Did a 2x circuit of 10x O/H Shot doing throw run throw 10x Hammer release with the shot doing throw run throw. 6x a side 28 swings side to side quickly followed by 12lb sledgehammer winds 10x a side. 30m run 10x burpees 30m run back two sets. Hopefully today ill ge tto the gym or do another small fitness session. Eating has been a bit better the last few days as my weight was 21st 1lb after the holiday. |

Late getting back again so just some throwing and circuits. Throwing was 28lb. Didn't have the best shoes on for the surface. Just worked in the beginning to try and keep balanced on both turns and try and have a good long release. Was feeling pretty good and it forced me not to go too fast through the throw and potentially mess things up at the front. Circuits was 30m run then burpees x10, 30m run then 10x pres ups, 30m run then squat thrusts then 30m run with 10 squat jumps. Done two sets of these due to time and midgies then a lap of the field to finish things off. 15/7/16 Weather was chucking it down today and decided to get some concrete throwing done. Circle was underwater so found a towel that wasn't mine and then get the water out of it. I wasn't expecting too much given I done a session the night before. Standing throws were okay and the fixed foot I was starting to get the timing a bit better. Reverse throws are not too far away but still letting myself turn before the legs start although in the main the reverse stands were reasonable enough. Full throws didn't feel as sharp as Mondays although I felt I was getting some reasonable foot movement. I need to get the feet in a bit quicker and really work the torque at the front. I also need to try and stay on the shot longer at the front. Distance not as good as Monday but I had a fair amount of rest inbetween. Not doing a games this Saturday bit I plan on doing the athletics match on Sunday. Next day or so will be resting, stretching and getting a good warm up before the competition. |

Didn't do any games this weekend due to planning to do a track and field meet on the Sunday. I wasn't going to do the SGHA world champs at Balloch even though it was the closest to me. The rest of the games on were at least a 3 hour drive away. I decided to do a Scottish League match for the first time in two years and the first time I have thrown on concrete since then. Only planned on doing the shot and I had a personal target of 13.50 to decide whether I would enter the Scottish Championships. Warmed up well only had six warm ups two fixed stands one reverse and three full throw warm ups. First round was 12.70 where I came off the throw but at least got the pints earner in for the club. Second round throw was 13.53 or so. This felt better but there was still more to come. Third round throw I took the lead with 13.67. Fourth round I then found myself down to third and my fourth round throw had nothing behind and it dropped at 13m so it was a walk out. Fifth round I hit my big throw of the day. I held the throw well and felt I was getting a good hit and felt a bit of a flick at the end and I came away with 13.84. Final round I was aiming for 14m which would have been my first time over 14 in three years in regulation competition. It felt good but it just dropped short of the 14m line. Overall I was pleased with the intensity of my throwing I didn't get carried away and felt I was working through the throw much better than I have been doing thus far. I plan to continue to work out the circle for the next three to four weeks for the Scottish Track and Field Champs in mid august. I would hope to be able to get mid 14m if I get a good run of training and train smart. The frustrating but pleasing thing is that I am throwing as good as I was in my very early twenties with less than a sixth of the amount of training. What I am taking form this is that I think I am concentrating a lot more on the throws to get quality out of it rather than throw for the sake of throwing. I feel I know when to stop when the throw breaks down during training. Going to do another athletics match this Saturday. SO tonight I will be in the gym, Tuesday hopefully throw and Thursday throw and sprints. |

Traditionally I never throw well on a Monday after a competition so I decided to go to the gym and do a bit of lifting. Was going to do some quick lifts but a few folk pointed out that the current challenge in the gym is lifting heavy. There is a few challenges, deadlift, bench press, clean and press, med ball throw and as many deadlifts in a minute. I thought I would have a little practice with some of them. Deadlift went 60x3/100x2/150x1/190x1/230kgx1 should have got someone to witness it so it would count but I need to get some more lifting in and go for a 240 possibly. Bench was 60x3/100x3/120x1 this felt okay but decided to not do more at this time. Clean and press was 60x1/80x1/90x1/100x1 This felt better than expected especially at 100kg. The press was a bit tasty though. In know it isn't that much in terms of weight but I haven't done cleans in quite a while. I asked about the medicine ball throw and they haven't figured out which way they will do it. They plan to use a 9kg or a 12kg slam ball. They are quite soft but I reckon I could get a not bad throw out of it. Finished off with some bar twists and hammer winds with 10kg plate. Tomorrow I will do either putting or if I get time do snatch bench and deadlift/squat. |

Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st was mainly just standing throws due to time with some circuits thrown in. Just same of the usual but I am noticing that I need the stop board to allow me to try and get decent extension and not pull away from the throw.
Friday 22nd I decided to do some light circuits and hammer twists. Probably shouldn't have done it as I had a competition the next day but I was always looking at that as a traingin session anyway. Saturday 23rd I dodged the games again to concentrate on getting my shot putt back together. Went to an athletics throws meet and it was good seeing my coach again. The competition was a bit frustrating as we only got two warm up throws and it was a bit later in starting so I had to try and keep loose. Series is as follows 12.60, 13.11, 13.31, 13.41, NT, 13.33. Felt lethargic all the way through and didn't seem to have the same feeling as the week before. All the throws were down the middle and the NT was a walk out. In those terms it was good but I was looking for a better distance than last week. Monday 25th Bunked off to crownpoint for a cheeky lunchtime throwing session. Weather is a bit gash and but managed to get a bit of clear weather to throw. Standing throws were 6x fixed foot, 6x reverse, 6x light full rotation and 4x competition, then the rain truly hit. Standing throws were okay took a while to get the hit on the fixed foot but it was okay in the end. Reverse was frustrating as I was just jumping away from it and not getting enough torque in the early throws. I managed to sort this out after wards. Full rotational at about 70% I tried to focus on getting the feet in and then trying to pop the hip in before release. I am starting to get that feeling back a little but I need to ge the timing between that and the final hit. First couple of competition style were good and easily matched what I did at the weekend. My third throw I tried to get moving faster but I was punching flat and coming out the front. Tried to do that on the fourth but the rain had just started and it just popped out the air. Usually my Monday throws are no good but it seemed to buck the trend. I need to get another session down here this week and possibly at the weekend. Next couple of sessions will be lifting and fitness work. I don't plan to do a games the next couple of weekends. |

Had a tiring day at work and felt pretty lethargic most of the day. Got some gym work in and it was a bit frustrating as there was still some folk faffing around on the bars. Dumbell SNatch 3x6@35kg per arm. These felt not too bad and really tried to get the full extension and pull. Clean and Press Was toying with going for a 110kg as someone in the gym had done a 105kg but only went up to 100kg and it didn't have the snap I had last week. so done 2@60kg, 1@80kg, 1@100kg. Snatch Didn't superset as I had already done dumbbell snatch. 3x6@60kg. They felt reasonably quick and again I was looking to get as much extension as I can. I was feeling tight on my right arm so didn't force back the bar into the locking postion. Finished with bar twists, side raises with the bar and arm raise with the bar for two sets of ten each exercise. Intending to lift on Thursday and then throw the shot on Saturday. |

Since the last post I managed my target of 14m for the shot in the Scottish champs for second place. The games I had done since then were North Berwick, Birnam and Peebles to finish. Weight over the bar was the best of the events and some half decent 28wfd thrown in. Hammers were shocking though. Aim for the winter seems to be the usual with getting weight down and get more throwing in. Since the last games I have been doing mainly fitness work in the gym when I get the chance. 10 mins of bike on cardio setting followed by 4x10 in clean, bench and squat or deadlift with a minutes rest between sets. The weight is no more than 70kg. I will be doing this for a few more weeks then I will test mid October for max lifts to gauge percentages.
