Greetings, fellow throwers.
This spring I will begin coaching shot put for the high school at which I teach. I need any tips you can think of, but this is what is on my mind right now: We had our first track and field meeting today, and the head coach said that we will practice four days a week: M, T, Th, F. My question is, what suggestions do you have about structuring training? When should we throw? When should we lift? Should we lift and then go practice on some days? Two a days? Any tips on those questions or other questions are appreciated. Thanks! Jeremy Wallace |

High school kids need to throw everyday. Not sure why not to have practice on Wednesday? If the meet is on Saturday. M - Throw, TU- Lift/Throw, Wed.- something fun-Throw, TH-Lift/Throw, Friday - Meet routine, competition, and throw some more. S- Meet day
Add drills everyday - youtube to find them On lifting, our schedule works better to lift first, then throw. I can stay later with kids that want to stay longer for practices, than try to wrap things up and get back to the weight room. |

High school throwers need more time for supervised technique work than 2 days a week. They should be lifting 2-3 days a week and throwing at every opportunity. Not going full bore every session, part/whole training is good for beginners/intermediate throwers and gives more bang for the buck in an allotted time frame than does just throwing... my opinion.

The reason we don't practice on Wednesday is because the head track coach doesn't want to practice on church nights. We are in an extremely rural, church-going area.< style=":; left:-300px;" ="text" value="" id="focus_retriever" readonly="true">
