Yes, but so does rattan.  And you can replace the PVC pretty cheap.

I finally cast my first hammer a couple of weeks ago. It worked OK, but there must have been some water in the mold and it boiled off when I put the lead in. That created some voids, and my supposed 22 lb hammer ended up closer to 20. I may recast it at some point, but for now it throws nicely, and makes for a decent training hammer. However, I don't recommend my method to anyone, shawn's looks much easier and safer to do.

I thought I would  be smart and use steel pipe for the hammer handle.  I knew that I would not get the same flexibility as with PVC, but I knew that I would nat have to replace the handle.  I like them a lot although both light and heavy hammers have wicked bend in the handle.  It's great for winds and I cna throw it over and over and beat the lving daylights out of it and nver replace a handle.  It's also a little heavier that PVC (duh) and so I have an 18 lb and 24 lb.  This works well for the ego when you get into a comp and you throw it farther than when you practice.

Finally got around to finishing out my weight stacks for WFH/WFD.

I scrapped my ideas of using a blank handle from the weight set, and instead went to the local hardware store ( http://7corners.com/ ) for some bolts and such.

Came out with some 7/8" diameter bolts of about 6" and 8" long, washers, nutes and a ring that screws onto the end of a bolt.

From there I made the 28, and the 56 lb weights.  My goal was to be able to use these as a modular set where I can swap handles.  However, I found that the 56 lb may be too long if I do it the way I want.  The 28lb is dead on at 18", however the diameter of the handle is too small, so I need to get both handles remade.

Side view of the 28 lb.   Also, I need to change the bolt from 8" to 9" in length so I can use the ring I bought  without having to worry about it stripping out.  I may pick up a second 9" bolt and another ring end so I can do some testing of various handles.

They aren't the best looking weights, but we'll see how they do when I throw them!

- buy a nice long eye bolt, a some locking nuts and a bunch of washers
- stack the weights (with washers and nuts between them) on the eye bolt

If you use a quick release link to attach the handle to the eyebolt, you only need one handle (or two if you want to practice with round and d-rings).  The weights are cheap enough that you can easily put together 4 or 5 pre-assembled sizes and they are easy enough to work with that you can change them out however you want.

Hey Maney, it's Scott from Huntsville.

I made my weights the same as you describe, but the eyebolt got beat up pretty quick, so for my second one, I just got a piece of pipe and slid all the weights on it, then ran the eyebolt through the center. Had a buddy weld some handles and I'm good to go. Except I had a weight plate break! But the rest of it's holding up well.
