I feel kind of foolish posting to this board, as it seems all you guys may not want to be bothered by someone like me, but I need help.

I have always wanted to compete in a Scottish Heavy Athletic event, and I am now using that desire as a goal to get myself back in shape.

I have never done anything like this before, and I need help with the training.  I literally have no clue what I'm doing.  I can get into condition myself, but I need some direction on training for the events.

I am in Sarasota, FL and the reason why I am posting here is because I do have some connection to the Midwest, and every single person I have tried to contact locally has not panned out.

If anyone can give me any direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

There are plenty of people here who have gone from nothing to something via HG, so don't feel foolish at all.  By far the best way to get started is by being shown how by someone with some experience.  Someone down your way should pipe in here and get you started.

Where in the midwest?  We have a group that rotates practice between Milwaukee, Madison, & Rockford during the off season.

There's no finer folk than heavies.  They'll help you however they can as long as you show interest in learning.

Hey New Guy-

Find yourself some good stones, ... then get busy learning how to throw'em. I have a set of 15lb, 16, 18, 22 and 30 pound stones waiting for me at the trig in my yard. I'll throw them all tonight.

I think the stone throw is a good place to start your journey, cause if you feel confident competing in at least one of the events then you'll continue. Weights, hammers, sheafs and caber require more technique and unique skills. These will take some time, ... years. Be patient.

Buy an inexpensive kilt and go to the next HG in Central Florida and talk to the throwers. There will be many high quality throwers there. Buy a few beers for the guys and then they'll be glad to talk to you about their training secrets.

Good luck in your training,

If you're up in the Minneapolis area, I'd be happy to throw with you. Like the other guys have said, the best way to get started is to sign up for a games and learn on the fly. Everyone there will be happy to give you advice on how to throw. Stillwaterkilts.com and Sportkilt.com are both good places to get a cheap starter kilt.

I'd recommend reading just about everything at danjohn.org, and then watching the videos at Highlandgames.net to see how the throws are supposed to look. You can make plate loaded versions of all of the equipment yourself with a little ingenuity. Then get out there and do it.

I doubt you will ever find a more helpful and welcoming group of people.  If there's a games near you try to talk to one of the people there and let them know you are seriously interested. I'm sure they would be willing to help.   This was my first year and everyone has been terrific.

Well thank you gentlemen.  I never know when a subculture is going to be an "us four and no more" type.

My connections with the Midwest is in Southwest MO.  My wife's family lives there, and we could possibly be moving there within the next 6-12 months.

Thanks for all of the advice so far.

drhambrick,

I live in Lebanon MO and am going to be at the Buffalo games this weekend.

Where in SW Mo are you talking about?

Bro, you are living in the land of retirement.  My mother and father in law live there and no they don't throw.  Get some good foot work in the local shuffleboard tournament.  Power out some horse shoes, drive to the post man.  I can see your point to look here rather than the local athletes.

I know this is an old post, but...

Check the SSAAA message board (www.thessaaa.org, and click on the message board link at left) and post an inquiry there, and you might find some local throwers in Florida.

The other thing you should do is find a game in your area, show up, and throw. Other athletes are always willing to help out less experienced throwers.
