Have him do real heavy deadlifts. It will build up his bone density.
Just kidding. I couldn't resist. It's been a hard 2 weeks. ~Jason "I've never done a deadlift in my life" Pauli |

Dave- I recently started a JrHigh weightlifting program at my school and the kids are loving it. Don't be afraid to start your son lifting. It won't take long for you to find what works and what doesn't. If you know anything about lifting, you'll see it for youself. Kids like to do deadlifts,... really they do. They also really like power cleans and push presses. I was really surprised at how the kids could do overhead squats. I'm an old guy with no flexibilty and could hardly show the proper technique for the overhead, but the kids could just jump right in.--- Now, we started with just a PVC hammer handle, but still it was very impressive. I'd suggest that you get some PVC hammer handles and start each workout with 'techinque time' and then let him lift an oly bar for reps. You'll find your way. Good luck in your training, -AncientCoach |

Bad Example- With a 14 second keg stand I thought that you would be better at over head squats. Dave- I was just about to get on here and tell you to ask the Ancient One due to his having undertakin something like this already. I would listen to him. -Jack Daniels |

TP190- I really have to credit my year-round diet, weight training and conditioning program to allow me to be in the proper state of tranquility to achieve a 14 second handstand on top of a keg of beer at a college party. Good luck in your training, -TeamKegStand |

The greatest advice would be to learn proper lifting form with light weight, and smooth repetitions with a one or two second count up and a four to five second count down (negative portion of the lift.) I strongly recommend reading The Matrix Principle, by Ronald S. Laura and Kenneth R. Dutton, 1992, John Magee, Inc. New Zealand. A well designed book and the program is spelled out for you, and it is adaptable. Put yourself and your son on this and you will be amzaed what you can do after three stages. That is Matrix, not to be confused with Metrix food and their system.

Dave- Also, don't underestimate the power of having a workout buddy. The kids I'm working with spend all their time lifting in pairs or groups. Imagine, a recent conversation by two kids in the weight room ... "Hey Greg, I can really see the veins in your forearms when you do that. I hope by next year that mine will show like that." Those little things like that will help with the motivation that you need to add that to what you learn from books or videos. Good luck in your training, -Morpheus
