So I made a decision to commit to my boots early in the year and actually practice my drills in them.  Is this crazy?

I've had the boots for two years and STILL do not feel comfortable in them.  I get to practice and warm up, get a few throws, then put on the boots.  They screw me up so bad I get frustrated about needing to get some good throws in...so I take them off.  Repeat that for two years.  This leads to my trying then to add them to my competition throws....

...well cause I am brilliant like that.  EmbarrassedConfusedEmbarrassed

Does anyone else do their warm up winds with boots on?  Does anyone else commit to using the boots for every practice?

Thoughts?

You are going to throw in them (unless you go to the Claw) so train in them.  The only way you are going to get comfortable with them is to use them.

Like the hookgrip.  Doesn't feel good at first, and nothing works.  After all that ouch goes away, you're golden.

Slow down with the winds.  Practice one's, then two's, and so on.  It will get better.

Trust me.  A Jedi I am.

I just took all my hammer work back to ground zero. Last week, this week and next week are without boots. Afterwards, it's all blades until about 3 weeks out from a competition I know I can't use blades at (Flagstaff). That includes warmups and drills.

Yeah, they're out there.  Enumclaw (the Claw) & Tacoma (l know for sure,) Ventura (pretty sure) & Flagstaff (l just learned.)

Because of having a sand throwing surface, the Claw uses a sheet of plywood covered with Astroturf.

One blade at a time maybe. I recall just using the right blade when I started ( left side release) and my first few games. With Craig ban blades . Acl tear in 05' while throwing the light -2 years to recover. IMO direct result of the blades . At this point , 53 in July not sure there is any upside to using them .

Every game I can possibly throw without them, or convince everyone else to throw without them, I do.  We did it several times last year.

I mean really, who the F likes to change shoes midday?

Or get tacky all over your shoe laces when you are taking the boots back off again.

lazy, lol..

out of curiosity, what are your #s with blades vs without blades?

Now that I'm throwing 115 (LH obv) without blades, I'm anxious to see how that will translate. Though, I think I still have more in the tank before my feet start wobbling too much.

thats big time..

129 LH w/o blades is sick... I was practicing hammer monday and finally getting the feeling of moving left/right, driving my right knee down as the hammer is approaching my left side, that combined with not leaning crazy far back did wonders.. got a hell of a whip out of it, for once I'm actually looking forward to hammer practice again.

Craig doesn't like getting out of breath to change his shoes is all.

But practice 1, 2 and 3 spin releases. I took a few weeks and just committed to getting comfortable doing nice easy releases and stepping out of the holes.

After that, it was go time.

Yeah, and I just had to click on this thread because it had the word "Practice" in the title and Craig was listed as the most recent post...

In my opinion, you gain little from practicing without blades.  To me, it's a very different throw and feel, so if you truly want to get the advantage of using blades, then practice in them every time.  Blades allow you so much more counter and enable you to relax the arms (get 'em long), but when I drop the blades, I tend to shorten my arms and not counter the ball.  I haven't practiced without my blades in years.

It'll most likely take you a few weeks to get used to it (when I made the switch my numbers dropped for a few games before setting new personal bests).  It's definitely worth it, though.

Just my thoughts.

So, that's how you set the field record of 110' 11 3/4 at the Claw?

boots for every practice.
and no winds ever, just throw...

nascar drivers don't practice driving 45 miles an hour around the track and slamming on the breaks at the end of the lap, we shouldn't either.

Mike holds the 16# Hammer field record at the Claw at 133' 6.5" without blades!  He also has thrown the 22# there 108' 6.5", also without blades!!
