okay Quint... im goingt against my better judgement and starting a training log... i need, n the worst way, to hit a big lifting cycle up to peak around august... so i guess i will hold myself accountable with the LOG here.

this morning i worked out with the kids and am going to be sore as all hell!!!

split leg squats (lunge position) 6X5 each leg w/ 225 up to 250lbs

- right after each set some standing long jumps X5 in the gym

Clean & Jerk - 3 X (3,2,1) w/ 75, 85, 90%... last single was at 300lbs

- after each set did squat jumps X5 as high as i could get!

outside we did starts w/ a 165lb sled and thick rope

- hold the rope over your shoulder, crouch, take off like youre coming out of blocks for 5 HARD steps, the let go of the rope while accellerating for 10 more steps

-also did (-) box jumps over 4-5 agiles (stacked)

-step-ups with a 10lb med ball in each hand (on figer tips)... starting and ending in a lunge position

-some single leg lateral hops 5X5 each foot, each direction

- all followed by 5 hills

going to do a few other things this afternoon, but my energy level is 0 after this morning... hope i find something else in the tank, i have never felt as week as i did this weekend in houston... nothing flew... the overhed stuff wass a joke, and i 100% jacked my back up doing some damn hammer winds... retarded. thiss weekend has given me a new kinda drive that will hopefully pay off... im going to TRAIN

Its never snowed on my birthday, but it might this year.  I am glad you have come around, something about watching a guy barely miss 17'6" standing with his non-dominant hand that will do that to you.

Spencer, bro, I can't wait for the "I Pulled something" training log entry. How long do you think you can make it? I say at least two weeks if you ease in.

on wednesday we hit some upper stuff!

- HEAVY (for me) shrugs w/ a pause at the top for a 1 count 5X10

-- followed by 2X10 FAST (full range)

-- after a good recovery, 1X20 FAST!!! <=== this set sucked

--- all at 350

- Bench (-)'s 5X4 with 375... i know Qunit, I know

-- after each set, hit 5 clapper push-ups

-- when done, had 2X10 of bar releases @ 135 (throw the bar as high as you can and hope like hell you catch it!!!)

- OUTSIDE

-- plate stacking 10X45X5 - ten 45lb plates stacked on a 30in box... stand between two boxes (actually just if front of them) and move the plates from one box to the other... the back = 1 set!

-- log press X 10 X 5 @ 128lbs

-- kettle bell throws

-- seated sled pulls

-- farmers walk to failure X 185 each hand X 3

feeling pretty damn broke down after this first week easing  bback in!

Did I see farmers walk on there? Does that mean you are tired of having those 42' hwfd throws slide out of your hand and only go 36'? I better step up my training or you are going to start making me look like a good b instead of a mediocre a.

Thursday

- JACK SH#T!!!

Friday

- came to Stephenville to throw with Quint and his 3 national qualifiers! Threw some discus after not touching a 2K for about 2 yrs!!! surprisingly thre right around 177!... HA!. that make me feel much more humble than the 1.6K that flew over 200ft... oh well, its a thing of the past.

- After the discus lesson Quint and I hit up the stones... trying to fix little things. might have made a mistake though... Quint T Melius is back!!! he was dropping some bombs Friday... entire series was over 53ft w/ the best of the day being close to 56... I think i had 1 that was pushing 57, but everything else was all over the place... must note that we were throwing out of a ring with a 15.5lb stone. I am pretty excited about Quint lloking like the thrower i used to know... Teaxas Games are going to be like an American Championship at evey evet that the best come to... this will for one hell of a year!!!!

this morning started around 5:15am and was just a testing day for the kids, so i jumped in on a couple.

- tire carry (~190lb tracter tire)... just under 1,000ft was my mark... not that it was heavy, it was just awkward to carry... holding it against your chest, like it was going to roll up and down your body!

- sled loading and pull

-- set up a sled w/ a thick rope tied to it, put a 100lb plate at 50ft away, 45lber at 75ft, and another 45lber at 100ft. start behing the sled, run to the 100, pick it up and load it back on the sled, run to th first 45 and do the same, followed by the last 45. when the sled is loaded, pull backwards for the entire 100ft (this was a timed test).

--- i did mine in 58sec. and thought i was going to die... i never do any type of cardio... and it shows!!! but, our quarterback had the next best time at 1:26, so i felt pretty good about it.

- ran out of time to do the farmers walk... it was only 145lbs in each hand, so it wasnt too difficult... best kid of the day went just over 300ft! not bad for a 180lb free safety!

hope to get a lift in after school today, but that might be a little hard this week... guess we will just have to see.

MAY 26

alot of shoulder stuff... dont feel like listing it, but it was all DB stuff...fail!

Clean & Jerk!!!

- 2X5, 2X4, 1X3, 3X1

-- spent quite a while o this today. made sure to have a full recovery between sets... the last 3 for sure (hit 315 pretty smooth every time).

Hang Snatch

- 5X5

-- went pretty light here, just trying to move the bar as fast as i could while having good technique. got to 185lbs and stopped there.

after the lift, i went to the gym and played basketball with a few of the kids for about 2 hrs... i was deadern' hell!... but we did win the first 2 of three games! got blown out the last game! my light gray shirt was definitely dark by the time we were done.

probably going to take it pretty easy tomorrow. i have to help my old man bust, and move, a few 1000+ lb rocks from under the lake house!!! i will be swingin the hell out of a sledge for the better half of a day!!! should be a good little workout... going to suck with a hangover though...

memorial weekend ruined my regime... if there was one.

saturday

- broke up some giant stone out at the lake... kicked my butt!!!

- drank

sunday

- drank

monday

- nothing

- drank

tuesday

- front squat jumps

-- 6X8 -- only got up to 185 on these... tried to get as much air as i could

-- DB lunge jumps -- 5X5 each leg w/ 60% of body weight = 180

-- 500 abs -- 250 w/ resistance

-- snatch grip lunges... stepping way out -- 5X5 each leg

i think this is all im doing this week... trying to stay fresh for Arlington (if i can even go)... coming soon will be a 6-8 week cycle that will hopefully kick my ass!!! try to peak for PTown and the Claw!!!

June 8

droppin the ball a little bit here by forgetting to post wprkouts

bench
- 2X8, 2X6, 1X3, 2X2, -- bar releases X 10 X 2 after all sets

wrist rolls
- forward and backward to failure X 2 each time with 315 on the bar... did this 5 time... forearms and hands were on FIRE!

half curls with twist
- do a half curl, twist hand so palm is down, and go back down slowly... this definitely helps grip... 4X8X30LB DB's

single hand plate snatch
- hold two 10lb plates (smooth side out for less to grip) together and slowly lift from waist to overhead and back down while squeezing the hell out of them so they do not move around in your grip... this is another simple exercise that helps GRIP

heavy BB shrugs
- 4X20, 2X15... last 2 sets with 405

calf raises
- 4X25 with all the weight this gay machine would hold

ab crushers
- 3x16 w/ 225... went a little light here because i had no rack, or rubber weights and didn't want to cause to much of a scene!!!

some hammer curls

3 min cool down
- SUPER SLOW jogs

sorry duncan, been so damn busy driving lately, i havent even seen a computer.

the last workout i did was some hammer stuff with "THE" Jon Irvin here in OKC... learned a lot of stuff, but may have overdone it a little. two days before the KC games, we went out to the Y's field to do a little tossin. after 30-or-so throws, my ads were were F'n PISSED... then, after breaking 2 handlse, we moved to the heavy... mistake. finally done with hammer and moved on to one of his B standard cabers (wich, suprisingly is harder to deal with than a big stick) and learned a few tricks that will definitely help my control... "MEATLOAF"... when i got to KC, i did not warm up properly and ended up pulling the sh!t out of an ab... could not breath deap for the rest of the day and the drive back was killer!!! stupid ab... i do believe that we will be getting some stone work in today, so i will try to remember to post a little later.

PS: video of Duncan's dance lesson will be up soon!!!

Did a good bit of swimming today... Damn near drown myself! Then I moved 5 or 6 more large stones (around 150-500lbs)... They were all different shapes and sizes. I had to move them from under a house and build a rock ledge about 40ft, and down hill, from their resting place... Too awkward to carry, I basically did tire flips w/ the rocks, as they were all pretty damn flat and would not roll at all... This was a favor I did for my old man that I turned into a pretty damn tuff workout! To add to the ass kicking I took, this was during the heat of the day in beautiful Burnet Texas!!!

I Took my weight today and tested vert

That is sensational! How heavy were you when your vertical
was 34"? Even if you were only 275 that would have been
amazing. What can you manage in the Overhead Shot Toss
with a 16#? What were some of your throwing numbers in
college?

it was actually 33... sometimes my fingers hit more than one key.

when i was a freshman in college i hit 33 at about 310. last year i bested that by 1/4 inch at ~ 290... just been a slob lately though, but saw the basketball girls testing vert and decided to give it a go.

Big Quint and I have been crawling back into the WR the last few weeks (now that our marathon of a football season is over) and i am feeling great.

new starting points are pretty low, but at least Clean and Jerk is still over 300... when that gets too low, I know I am in major trouble. everything else is pretty low: Snatch ~ 240<===This SUCKS. Bench ~ 385. Squat ~ 500. and DL ~ 550.

Quint is still strong as shit, so it gives me plenty of motivation to hit it harder than i have in recent past. Doubles seem to be moving in a positive direction pretty damn fast, so I feel like I will be ready to throw the hell out of heavy thing pretty soon!!! cant wait to start hitting PR's again!

Training came to a Screeching halt when we started up track season.... I know a lot of people out there have the energy, but after getting up at 4:50am, getting to work at 5:30, doing the damn thing all day, going to practice, coming back to the school for offensive meetings, and leaving close to 7 (on a good day)... We really dont feel like doing much of shit!... hell, yesterday was a 19hr workday... damn, I even hate writing that down!!!

Other than that, we will be turning things up very soon. Track is nearly over, which means we will have MUCH more time to get some quality lifting in...

If you have any contacts with the Comets, pass them along... Hell, I bet I wouldn't even have the biggest package on the team!

Well, considering I do not get to do a lot of training these days, I am looking at these early highland games as good, competitive practice.

San Antonio went well... did figure a few things out that need work
-42 HWFD
-85 LWFD
-57 OS -- really thought I was going to uncork one here
-39 braemar w/ 24#
-32 sheaf -- should have been 36... this is another area thats feeling real good these days
-15 WOB -- Blows Ass... so pissed about how this has been going... down from 17ft one year ago
-108 LH -- ghey. as you can see, I suck ass at the damn hammers.... someone please help me!!!???!!! No one has been able to fix a thing yet... and I am pretty sure Im coachable...
-Caber went well after blowing throw my first grip... more glue!!!!

One PR on the day felt good, but still pissed about some major footwork issues that need to be resolved ASAFP!

nothing crazy. Just hit up some squats.... stayed light here to avoid... well, pain.

Squat:
225x10x3
315x10x2
405x6x2

Glute/Ham
3x10 w/ body weight (HEAVY)

Quint gave it a shot, but caught one of the worst hamstring cramps I have ever witnessed!!! ... should have seen him trying to get his feet out of the g/h as fast as he could... damnit, good stuff.

Threw in Huntsville this weekend. Had a pretty solid day, but was disappointed with a few throws.

  • BT - 43
  • OS - 55... this felt like ass... great stone, just hard to find a handle.  never could get a good finish together.
  • HW - 41 and change. a little pissed about this too. HW has been     going great and i tought i was going to hit a big one this week, but FAIL!!!
  • LW - 81 or 2... cant remember for sure. NOT happy with this either. Like the HW, it has been feeling good lately, but its hard to have      big throw when the weight never gets above your head
  • LH - 118. This is not a good throw, but a season best, and i think  i  figured a few things out
  • HH - 96... GAY
  • CABER - 2 x 12:00, but Matt broke the damn thing... i wasnt pissed!!!
  • Sheaf - 35'1"... this is a PR.
  • WOB - 15'6"... still not feeling it like i have in the passed. i think i
  • am getting way too gassed at the end of the day. feel like such a puss when it comes to WOB these days... DAMNIT!!!

Overall it was a solid day... finishing 2nd to Matt always burns, but its fun to throw with him, Andy, Quint, Kyle, and Joe! These guys make games very interesting... everyone has solid games and can really scare you if youre not on your toes. Had a blast!!!
Now its time to gear up for Iceland! starting the road trip to Boston, to fly out, on the 28th. Stopping in NC to do a little training with Frasier on the way; My liver has never been more ready! Traveling with MATT Albert should be one hell of a time!

Oh, and Kyle always puts on a good games. Even though there were very few folks throwing, we all felt comfortable with the pace Sat. Good stuff Speer, looking forward to another.

this past friday we had a COLD rep max day on bench... BAD IDEA!!!

Quint went:
405x5 followed by 315x18

I Went:
365x5 followed by 315x10

felt pretty damn weak after this. We resorted to a cold, rep max day because we only had about 10mins to get a workout in, but it was an eventful day in the weight room. We got all of the kids pretty excited to push some weight, so I will chalk it up as a win!

N v S challenge!

I have actually been doing some training for this fella... Just trying to get at least two solid lifting days in a week has me feeling pretty damn good! Always getting home around night fall has really been detrimental to my throwing (there are only a few things I like to do alone in the dark)! I hope the lack of throwing does not show this weekend, but I know I will have a good damn time either way... Looking forward to seeing everyone again!!!

Friday Night/Saturday Morning

Tried to set a 19 beer, lifting PR... did not happen
 - Beech and I tried to get on the white board around 3AM sat morning
   - I went for a PP of 340 and was dominated... no warmup... just booze
   - Beech tried to hit a DL of 515, but had the same problems

As dumb as all this was, we had a blast giving it hell!
Later today will be Olympics! I am thinking we will spend a little time warming up today!!!!

   - 1x5 @ 225
   - 5x3 @ 255 (fast)
 - Snatch
   - 1x8 @ 95
   - 1x5 @ 135
   - 5x3 @ 205 (fast) felt like crap.... I suck at snatch LOL
 - Did some light keg loading afterwards!!!

Cool down was a 40 min walk around the neighborhood.

Stayed super light Monday because the ol' back was pretty tight after Friday nights debacle... weight was moving fast though.

Today should be a great to toss! might get stone and hammers taken care of.

Wednesday

- Ton of stone work with Duncan and Beech. I think the best of the day was around 60, but not sure... Damn thing flew a couple times! Duncan had a hard time processing everything, but came along. Took a couple of pulls on the 16# sheaf to test out the new handle... BOMBS!!!... no less then 90ft straight up (FACT)!!!
- Squats
 - 1x8@95
 - 1x8@185
 - 5x3@315 went pretty fast working with Dunc... pretty sore today
- Bench
 - Skipped it!!! (this is a first)

Thursday

- More stone work. I only took a few throws, but Duncan had some HEUUUGE tosses... I think he might turn a corner soon! Moved on to HW and had a couple that felt pretty good. I would say the avg. was 41-42. Not too bad of a day... moving a little slow though!!!!

Today

- Pushing and pulling later. HAVE to get this done before the weekend.... I SUCK AT DEADS!!!

Thursday

 - Threw the 28 a ton
   - things weren't going the way I wanted in this event so I started going back to the drawing board a little bit. After everything hitting a max distance of 81' or so, I changed a few things and hit over 84' on my last four-five throws... Longest one was 86' and change. Felt pretty good after a long session.

 - Light hammer
   - Took a lot of winds, but only threw three or four. They didn't feel bad, just out of gas after a long day.

Took a break from heavy lifting on Friday, due to a super sore back, and just did some light aux work.

Ready for Oly work today. Clean and Snatch have been feeling awesome lately, so hopefully that keeps up!

Monday
 - Got a later start than we planned (9:30)

 - Cleans
   - 2x6x95#
   - 2x4x185#
   - 5x3@275# - These were moving super fast today... felt real damn good!

 - Snatch
   - 2x3@95#
   - 5x3@185# - stayed real light... just wasn't timing up like it usually does, So I concentrated on         speed!

stopped after these two lifts. Had to get inside a tend to a couple things Wink (not self pleasure). Can really feel the difference today in skipping the usual cool down... not as fresh as I usually am after a day that was fast and felt so damn good.

Today we toss! Probably HW, hammer, sheaf (maybe).... I am sure I will squeeze some stone work in!!! Things have been feeling a lot better lately with the stones. It is always nice to have something fly past the 60ft wall... I don't care if it was a 15.5# rock... it feels great.

Was real hard to do anything yesterday.

Hammer
 - 16# - whole bunch of winds, but only about 6 throws... didn't have markers out today, but if I had to guess, I would say they all hit well over the 150ft mark!!!

 - HWFD - tried to start with a few one turns, but it just felt so bad. I went right in to fulls and might have had a couple gooduns. Again, if I had to guess, I would say they were all over 49'10" (easily).

 - Sheaf - NOPE

Had a long, non-sensual, walk with the wife-to-be that evening for a cool down. No energy this last week of school. Sitting down all day, administering tests, is wearing on me... Hell, I have kids taking a WRITTEN final for PE... so dumb.

we never even had "finals" for PE, but our weightlifting class had a written final the first year we were in it. afterwards it was just a "show up, get dressed and you pass" type class.. the only 2 classes I didn't sleep through in high school..
