ok, i'm in.
first off-season workout last night at gold's gym.
reminded me instantly why i hate gyms. typ. loud music,
dorks posing in the mirrors while they lift, etc. but
they've got lots of machines that go through all sorts of
ranges of motion that i haven't trained in years. I
figger it'll be fun to fart around in there for a few
weeks so i can get in shape to start lifting again.
BW was 288, and i'm packing down halloween candy like
it's my job. it will get worse before gets better. I'm
fat and flabby, but my belly is no where near as big as
mindy's (pregnant) so i'm still good. plan is to get in
shape so i don't have to hold my breath to tie my shoes.
so i pretty much kicked ass on the pec dec and pull-downs
last night. had a whole crowd standing around cheering.
took me a while to leave with all the autographs i had to
sign, but oh well. them's the breaks of being hardcore.

It will be good to see what you do, in the off-season. You have been one of the top 3-5 throwers, in the world, the last three years, in my opinion. My prediction is that your a lot stronger than you talk. Taking Larry Brock's spot as the biggest sandbagger in the sport.

I'm lovin' this! I can't wait to follow this one. Be
prepared for lots of sandbagging, sarcasm and freakish
feats of athleticism.

Agreed.
Mike, I know you claim you're not strong "now," but what
are your all-time bests? I know you've told me some of
your marks, but I can't remember all of them. All I know
is that you don't get quads like you've got by working on
your pontoon boat or chillin' by your smoker.

i'll log my food intake today to show you clowns how a
real athlete trains.
eggs. - hey, gotta start the day right, made by my wife
who happened to be barefoot AND pregnant in the kitchen.
awesome :)
2 big glasses of apple cider
11 snickers bars (the little ones)
2 butter fingers
1 handful of gummie bears.
1 apple (i'm a heath food nut!)
there will be no sandbagging. i will show you all how to
try to hang with studs like Dan, Sean, Matt V. etc while
working a job that's entirely too stressful for too many
hours with as little training as possible.
Dan, big lifts are a thing of the past. off season will
try to get a big clean back up to something heavy and
moving fast. got to 355 or 365 last year (w/rack). would
love to get near 405 this year, but we'll see what's in
the cards.

Craig, I was not questioning Mike's lifts at all (assuming that is what you
were suggesting)! I was merely expressing my hope that this would be a
legitimate training log and that, as Mike himself said, not a forum for
sandbagging etc etc, which is entertaining but not very helpful or really even
very interesting after a few posts. Not to mention which, although we
haven't heard much from him this year, Larry has proven himself to be the
Mozart or Einstein of sandbagging, and his accomplishments in that area
cannot really be matched. So what's the point, you know?

i will post a legit training log.
i won't be too serious about it.
srokus, i probably do 6 or 7 mental throws a day, each
event. i've got A LOT of throws in me, so i don't need
many now. but i always find myself stepping up a stair
and feeling the left left extend the same way a good
block on the left feels in the stone, and thinking about
that aspect of the throw for a while. throwing is so
technical to me, which is why many lifts will be so much
lower than other pros...
in that regard, this log may not be useful to new
throwers to see how many throws it takes to throw the
hammer 150 feet. i take a lot of throws, but its no
where near the number of throw i used to take (which is
why i don't need so many now).
the old training logs show 20+ hours a week of just
throwing (seriously). if your a newbie, that's what
yours should say too (imo, of course. lots of ways to
get there.)

Hit the gym today during lunch for legs. In an out in 35
mins.
OH squat
bar x 8
95 x 8
95 x 8
Front squat
95 x 8
135 x 8
135 x 8
Cramping up and muscle spasms in my left butt cheek
during last set. It’s been a long time since I’ve
lifted.
RDL – (I guess it’s a RDL, little bit of knee bend, lot
of hip translation)
95 x 8
135 x 8
135 x 8
Extension and ham curl machine
3 sets of about 85 on each, back to back sets of 8 no
rest
Did some calf raises on the seated machine after I
figured out how to get into it.
Almost got stuck in the donkey calf raise.
Sit-up / multi-hip / incline sit-up / glute raise machine
circuit. 3 times through 8 reps each, no rest.
High fives for everyone.

Thursday – wow, can’t believe how sore I am. Work is too
busy to go lift, rest day.
Friday – wanted to lift over lunch, guys started talking
burritos. I forgot about lifting. Call it another rest
day.
Saturday.
Push press – as little legs as possible tho…
95 x 8
135 x 8
155 x 8 (this was hard)
185 x 6 – can’t get 8. Too heavy.
Then circuit between chest machines - incline, decline,
and flat.
25 (per side) x 8
45 x 8
70 x 8
These weights on each machine.
Then a circuit on the Shoulder press machine, lat row,
lat pulldown machines
45 x 8
90 x 8
115 x 8 (last was really hard on the shoulder presses)
Pushdowns and curls
100 x 8 x 3 sets
Cheat curls (not much cheat)
95 x 8
135 x 8
155 x 8
Ab roller machine (this thing is AWESOME)
Hanging knee raises
This workout is exactly why I came to a gym to play
around before I start “lifting”. 250 or 300 reps in
about 25 minutes. Quick. Lots of toys.
Sunday – Wow I am sore.

115 x 8
135 x 8
front sq
135 x 8
185 x 5
225 x 5
275 x 5
315 x 3 (surprised by this, felt good. v. distracted
with angry work and busy gym, so shut it down before i
went heavy and got hurt. felt like 4 hundo was in the
tank. erectors felt strong to hold the position, which

Nothing like a 200 pound jump in your poundage to make you feel good. Clearly a potent man. I think when you referred to the small candy bars, you mean FUN SIZE? I think we burn more calories than we take in with those having to unwrap as fast as you can stuff them in, I mean I hear that is what people do.

more of the same last night. lunch meeting so couldn't
get in then, had to fight the after work crowd...
2 dorks sitting on the rack were "using it" so no presses
for me. i waited a few minutes as they slowly loaded
weights on the bar and continued their conversation.
there is literally no where else in this place to just
grab a bar and press - too many machines in there...
so...
shoulder press / chest press machines
45 x 8
90 x 8
90 x 8
incline machine (dorks are just starting to do bent over
rows in the rack now)
45 x 8
90 x 8
90 x 8
pulldown and row machine
45 x 8
90 x 8
90 x 8
curls (in the rack, baby)
95 x 8
135 x 8
155 x 8
cheat 185 x 4 too heavy.
pushdowns and some abs
i feel really good doing this comfy stuff. i felt like a
car accident at the end of the season. good decision to
play with this stuff at this point. putting stuff
together before i go tear it apart with heavy pulls, etc.

f squat
135 x 8
185 x 5
225 x 5
275 x 5
315 x 3
345 x 1
365 x 1
405 x 1
315 x 5
wanted to see what was in the tank. Sneakers are squishy
and it got a little forward and had to dig it out. too
heavy to lift at this place. too loud, too much
distraction (too much audience), too much risk here.
Will save heavy stuff for when i switch to home. felt
fairly light though.
ham curls and extensions for good measure.
back pretty tight from digging that 405 out, skip RDLs

oly shoes for everything.
on the road working, dress shoes make great lifting shoes
provided you can lace them tightly. You get a lot of
strange looks lifting in some alligator skins, but the hard
thin sole is great and it makes packing a cinch...

Mike,
Do you pair the dress shoes with dark over the calf dress socks, or white
athletic socks? Track pants, or shorts for the full effect? Somehow I doubt
anyone says much once they see you Front Squat 405 for a rep or three!
IMO, Oly shoes are a key piece of equipment for anyone involved in serious
strength training that includes any type of Oly squats, dynamic pulls, or
heavy overhead presses.

You know, I'm just nearing the end of my 3-4 week "lets get ready for lifting" prep. Yeah, OK, so I pushed my back squat volume and high end a little bit this week. Still.... Just doing a lot of "stuff". In fact, I probably will mix it up even more with more random crap from here to Thanksgiving. You call it "comfy stuff". I call it insurance that I don't get hurt, when things get serious for six weeks in January and February.

The current fashion trend among the lasses in my gym is black workout tight so flippin' tight that every single skin cell on the butt is squished into submission. For guys, it seems to be artistically ripped University shirts from your dorm or fraternity.

Intended to get 365 x 5, but I sit lower with each
heavier set and the stupid rack bumped the plates a
couple times on the last few…throws off balance and mojo
just enough so I decided to forget it. sometimes the
best sets for you are the ones you don’t do… literally
no room to do these outside the rack here. Afraid if I
back up 6 inches I’ll get impaled on the sled… way too
crowded there.

Wow, off the radar for a while…
L. back was v. tight during last lift, by the time I got home it was a full on spasm and within 2 hours I couldn’t get off the floor.
Happens to me 3 or 4 times a yr… Just can’t sit in a chair for 10 hrs a day and then go lift. After a day, couldn’t sleep…hitting the vicodin 2 at time and it wasn’t touching it. eff
…Actually went to the Dr.
4 days of Demerol and flexoril later, I’m good to go.
I try to kneel and stretch a lot all day, but there’s only so much you can do. Hip mobility has been terrible and is getting worse. Spent the whole season with a low-ab pull and hip-flexor supertightness from the job.
Have been looking into building a sit-stand desk for some time, but they are http://www.ergodepot.com/Adjustable_Desks_s/134.htm - http://www.ergodepot.com/Adjustable_Desks_s/134.htm
This weekend will build a stand-up desk. Gotta get more mobile at work.
Because of this… http://www.medicalbillingandcoding.org/sitting-kills/ - http://www.medicalbillingandcoding.org/sitting-kills/
Back to lifting.
Yesterday, upper.
Standing press superset with bulg. Split squats to try to open flexors up a bit. These feel great.

Incline, chest, shoulder machines - circuit

Silly stuff: pushdowns, curls, etc.

i get up as frequently as the frenzy of work allows.
some days its v. frequent, often i'll go 2 or 3 hrs of
panic-work, racing deadline, one call after another, etc.
i kneel, stretch, sit on this silly ball chair, bounce,
wiggle, walk to the printer, kitchen, do laps, etc...
but at the end of it all, it still adds up to a long
freaking stressful day hunched over a desk or screen for
way more hours than for which man evolved.
has been an issue for me since college. MRIs then said
bulging disc, no imaging since = ignorance is bliss, i
just work around it. happened on the first leg of the
flight to scotland last summer, and i could barely make
it to the second at the layover. first 5 games there
were just miserable...
anyway, gym today!
30 minuets of cardio on elliptical and treadmill.
it's official, i now have buns of steel.
actually, was a lot of fun, many years since i've done
it, and i feel great now.

Mike...rowing machine. Seriously. No chit.
It helps my back like nothing else and if you dig just a little bit deep for the pulls, it works hip and lower back flexibility. Not to mention the aerobic stuff. You don't have to bust a gut and go fast, just go for 8-12 minutes "reasonably" fast.
Try it....seriously.

I'm gonna be the party pooper Alan, and say uhhhh...no to the rowing machine. Back pain is like THE MOST COMMON rowing injury. You shouldn't be getting any marked degree of low back flexion or extension.
Don't do that....seriously.

Demerol is what they gave me when my thigh made a turn half way down, serious pain kill. Kind of shocked they went so modern in NC, thought the doc might just tune you up w some shine. You need to go back a little to what was working man, Halloween, Three muskateers, Snickers and some Skittles. Keep it simple. If you reflect back to the trip to Scotland, bet they did not have those on the plane. Just need a bowl at the desk.

All I know is that when my back gets tight, the rowing machine helps even me out. My hip flexibility might be OK for a 50+ year old guy, but it sucks compared to most of you young guys. But the rowing machine helps me ease up on those tight hips.
That works for me. YMMV.
Then again, yeah...I figure Mike probably has a reasonable idea what he's doing, here.

alan, if it works for you, do it.
often, what works for me is to load the bar heavy and
pull until i can't anymore... its' miserable, but if i
can get everything as fatigued as the spasm, it'll often
all let go at the same time. like rowing, it's not
something i'd recommend to anyone...but it works for me.
this is always a muscle thing and never feels structural,
so i figger it's ok to do stupid stuff like that.

Mike , i was reading about your back issues and in a previous life i did low back and neck rehab. Try to locat a Med-x lumbar extension machine. I would love to have one sitting in my living room. It is THE answer to low back pain. I am not a fan of machines typically but this one rocks. Might have to find a PT place to use one as it requires a tech to put you in. Worth the effort it has saved me more than once plus makes the low back stronger. Gonna use it tomorrow after heavy squats today.

no posts in a while, having troubling blood pressure issues.
grrrr....
has been high for some time, treating it moderately well with meds, though none were kicking it and have been changing them around.
tuesday, went in to squat...after easy complex with 65 and 95 lbs, i took a 135 for 10 and started 225 for a second warmup set. had to rack the wt at 3 reps with the onset of an instant, massive migraine, coupled with really terrible neck pain / back of head pain. yes folks, these are the big signs on an aneurysm.
sat down, managed not to throw up, took my shoes off, and got up to the house to take my bp. was 199 / 93... went to ER, CT scan shows no aneurysm. BP still up around 150 to 160 all night...
started talking with my family dr the next day, he mentioned that it might be something to do with my adrenal glands... quick google searches start bringing up all sorts of symptoms i have...
--sugar CRAVINGS (see above gummie bear posts...i'll knock over 12 to 30 freeze pops in a sitting, usually nightly. in college, i'd eat a whole 5 pound bag of smarties in a night studying for a test...and i had lots of tests and lots of smarties....) --frequent urination (college nickname = tiny-tank, i was the first to break the seal and would wear a path to the bathroom in the bar. this is such a pain, i've been screened multiple times for diabetes, which is heavy in the family) --trouble sleeping...totally attributed to substantial work stress, but if i wake, i'm up for good. --cramping & spasms...(again, see above back spasms...grrr...always thought it was part of the gig with throwing, though it's been getting progressively worse, to the point now where i get monthly massages on top of knots mindy continually works on. every massage therapist remarks that i'm more knotted and tighter than anyone they've seen...again, figured it was part of the gig with throwing but now i'm wondering if it's not connected. something to do with potassium balance...i haven't had time to really look into it. -- ear ringing. i've been seeing an ENT for hearing loss in one ear, only low frequency, which dr. said is not normal so he's looking into all sorts of other stuff that has strange frequency loss... (auto-immune stuff, tumors, etc...) - i'm wondering if it's related. --unquestionable handsomeness and rugged good looks are also symptoms...
had an MRI the morning of the migraine and injected with with something to help imaging. thought it was magnesium or something like that (no time to google that either yet....damn i am too busy). i'm wondering if that may have imbalanced something that set off the spike..
most things i find online point to something like conn's syndrome, but i've only had a few minutes to check into it. bp has remained higher than normal (normal was 140 / 80 with meds, now at 150+ / 80)...
thinking back about how i feel, i regularly feel an adrenalin surge throughout the day, i'm always jacked up, and when my mind drifts to something pressing, exciting, etc...i get an instant adrenalin surge like when you're stepping into the trig...
anyway, log will be sporadic for a bit until i get this crap sorted. treatments don't look too awesome, so could be career ending type stuff here. we'll see, i aint gonna go down without a fight.

appreciate all the kind words, guys. i'll get it sorted out...
still waiting on lab results from all sorts of crap, so no lifting. thought about it doing a little bit of movement Saturday just to keep grease in the groove, but decided against it. i'm scared to lift now...eff.
met with dr. yesterday, but still nothing confirmed. lots of ideas, most of which suck... said adrenal issue could easily cause an aneurysm or stroke if i get too jacked up...no limiter on that bottle of nitrous, so it'll blow the motor before it stops pumping out juice...so lots of yanni and herbal tea for me until someone can tell me which end is up.
don't get too comfortable though, boys...i've got lost time to make up for so when they release me, imma comin' for you!

pls elaborate? how does blowing my nose and microstretching relate? Wikipedia said something about valsalva affecting BP but the rest was way over my head... saw something about microstretching lowering nervous system response - is the stretching intended for more flexibility, and it's achieve through no pain / no nervous system impact, or is the intent of the stretching nervous system relief? i got a little lost on their website.

Mike, the "microstretching" bit is just, in essence, relaxing into a stretch over a much longer period of time (2-3 min) as opposed to the more traditional "forcing" a stretch for 15-45 seconds and usually using another physical object to assist with it.
You do things like lie down on a bench and just let your arms hang off to stretch the pecs out, put a leg up against a door jam while lying on your back to stretch the hamstrings, use light bands to gently tug you into a stretch, etc. And all just kind of relax and breathe into it.
Might be some nervous response to it too, but mostly I just know that I start to go loco if I can't do ANYTHING and even stretching is SOMETHING. I'm sure I have a microstretching PDF around here somewhere if you want a copy.
