I'm getting a 56 pound weight like this for christmas. My question is, to learn the hook grip, should I practice with this handle or should I learn this grip with a circle handle??? or something else like a bigger or smaller diameter handle???

Hook grip is one of my goals for the upcoming season. Unless all you throw is a circular handle why not mix it up and train for both?

D handles suck all around. Not sure why they are even made. And it will defintely be harder to hook than a normal ring. ------------- |

I like Craig. I like his wife. I've even learned a thing or two about training from him. But on this one he's flat wrong - D handles are the best. True story: those Polanik machine-finished swivel weights come with an O handle, and the first year at Utah nobody could throw them worth a damn. The next year Loosle put on some D handles and 8 out of 10 guys hit PRs, with Ryan fouling one throw over 50'. I've got the video. Think about it - what shape are barbells, round? NO, they're STRAIGHT. Just like the straight bit of a D handle. Who invented the hook grip? Thassright, weightlifters, who lift BARBELLS all day long.

I don't throw a barbell. I like the hook, but I never researched the invention of it. I hate a D handle. Most other things that come in D seem good to me and fit my hands, but not a D handle. I have a prototype D handle that's a wee bit thinner(and shorter-FOR A LONGER CHAIN!)..we will see it at western mass for the 28wfd..shall see ------------- JUST BRING IT / SPEED KILLS..BUT STRENGTH PUNISHES |

My suggestion about the D handle.....dont wear a glove and try to hook grip, just tape the thumb hook and use brock's magic tacky and eventually the pain will go away and the weight will go far. and you will lose your thumb nail but hey it will grow back

Larry, I am going to use your suggestion thank you. I have watched this throw soooo many times, and ryan is throwing with a glove, no hook grip, with a D-handle. I wish he would make up his mind. who knows? You run across so many different things at different games. We throw one at Alma that has a thinner ring handle, it's awesome, imo. Just easier to hook grip and hold if it's thinner, seems so basic to me? I dunno why anyone would want a fatter handle. It would be like having a max deadlift contest with a normal bar vs. a fat bar. Pretty clear which one people would choose. I dont know why Bobby doesn't make a thinner D handle, maybe you could ask him? ------------- |

With a hook you are putting your force in one central area, it is for pulling not side load. With the d if you are not in the center or move from center, you get pulled to the edge of the handle. With a round handle you are at the far point and won't move once you made your purchase. I have big hands so the fat does not bother me so much. But regardless I use lots of Brocks Magic Tacky, even when I don't throw, I just use it around the house. Reading a magazine, you know turning the pages, dip a little tack on the finger, and those pages turn like, well Magic. There is one small problem with Brock's magic tacky...now that it is available in a tube, it may be mistaken for Rogaine...or heaven forbid...personal lubricant!!!!
