I am new to this and rather than posting in the newbie section, it seemed to make sense to post my question here. Will be competing at the August 17th Scottish Highland Games in Topsham, ME. This will be my first competition and just had my first throwing session this past Saturday. We did not do WOB or the Caber. The Sheaf Toss makes me look like the village idiot(an I may be). What are basic mistakes made? Coach tells me I'm hooking it. We both talked back and forth. We both understand English but I'm probably too green to understand. Some background: I threw the Javelin all four years in HS and trained the Discus and Shotput some. Compete in Strongman,Olympic Lifting, Powerlifting and All-Round Lifting(USAWA). Any and all suggestions appreciated!!

Ask and ye shall receive:
This long-haired cat spent about an hour coaching me and added four feet and a lot of consistency to my throw. Tom |

And your Coach has a torn bicep and could not demonstrate!!! Wish I could! James, watch Duncan's video. It is gold. The bottom up drills he shows is what I was trying to explain. BTW, the fork you used was once Duncan's fork. Her name is Clarice. |

The Topsham games will be my second ever, and the little bit of advice that helped me the best with sheaf was "when you heave the sheaf, aim the fork at your foot, but don't stick the fork into your foot"
The second part felt more important of the two, but my throws got much better after applying the first part.

Lots of great sheafers out there...don't let Rob lie to you. He's as good, and potentially better looking, than I am.
Matt Hand seems to be getting into the groove as well. Lots of stuff out there man. |

Good luck with that sheaf James. I bombed on that event in my first HG comp and then someone gave me similar advice - possibly Thom Van Vleck, but I don't remember - about aiming at the foot and bam! - at least I didn't bomb at the next HG comp about 3 months later. Hit 16 feet with the 20lb sheaf. That is a pitiful performance. But I was okay with it since I had no way of practicing the sheaf in that time period between comps. It was literally the one or two cues that I got before and/or during the event that helped me hit a number.

Thanks Ben, I'm excited cuz, I got so much to learn. I bet I'm probably making something simple, complicated. Your back healed up enough to compete in the Games again?

Great advice from a judge at one of the competitions I threw this season when I said the same thing, "Never lose that. Remember that it's supposed to be fun. That's what keeps you coming back." Good luck. Doc Rob will steer you right. Tom |

There are better ones out there Speer, but thank you. Once you start to get some of those points nailed down, let me know...there's more to learn!
