I don't have much experience with the shot put/stone. I threw in High School, but my coach had no idea what he was doing. I have noticed that some people start out with the stone kinda jammed under or even behind there ear, and others have it more against their neck under their jaw line. I guess I was just wondering if anybody knew what the benefits were of the different positionings of the stone, or if it is just a personal prefference thing? |

Since no one else seems to be answering, I'll jump in.
This is basically a spin vs. glide thing. Rotational shot putters will hold the shot/stone higher and further back with their elbow held higher, while gilders will generally tuck the shot/stone under their jaw and position their elbow lower. |

To piggy back on that same thought. I am purely a stand and throw stone putter, hence the poor stone numbers. I like to put it almost right under my chin and throw.

I think, from my experience, that it really is just a matter of personal preference. I tuck it in my neck unde rmy ear, so that I can almost res tmy head on it, and I feel fairly satisfied with that

its apersonal preference, where you feel comfortable putting it, is where you should put it

When I threw shot, I always had the thing tucked up under
my ear. With the size of most stones, I found that to be a bit more difficult and the stone wouldn't do what I wanted it to. Parman and some other guys told me to move it forward some and VOILA, more consistent throws! |
