practice today, was good.

Lots of sheaf with new fork. Love it. antique with thinner tines, i can tell when the bag comes off well cause it makes music. standing up to 25'
42 for distance, keeping long, was working on pushing to zero then getting my body ahead of the weight. longest of 38, all around 35'36'.
52 for distance, less push to zero, working more on adding speed, staying long and a nice smooth finish. will work on pushing the weight more as the season progresses. i may be crazy, but for a 205ish lb dude, i love throwing heavyweight. its probably my fav event right now behind lite hammer. was getting this just over 30.
wfh, lots of rips, nothing much to report.

ate my face off today. need to keep that up as well.

ALB Games Weekend

after I inputted some scores last night, I realized I didnt do as bad as I thought. If it was a games I just went to compete at, I'd probably be a little disappointed. Considering my mind didnt really start to relax and get focused on throwing until weights, I'm pleased with what I put up. Especially considering the rain. Throwing in adversity was sort of a weakness last year. After this weekend I feel better about that.

my sheaf standards are a simple engineering feat, they worked perfect and I'm proud of that.
Gerrard paid part of his admission with 8 quarters. I WILL NEVER SPEND THEM.
my dog loves Rob more than me.
Brozina is a great dude, glad he made the trip. He also kept the streak alive (I think Duncan knows what I'm talking about).
Kaste's new nickname is DopplerKaste.
there will be no strongman next year. I rather party more the night after.
i have pics of athletes at the bar, with their shirts off and flexing (women included), perfect for blackmailing my way into future games.
Sam Grammar is an impressive man.
my volunteers really turned the corner this year at #3. they're turning into legit judges and I couldnt be prouder.

tried to throw today.
worked up to a 31' braemar
then didnt have the ummpfff for HWFD so after my third throw i think i double swear worded in the same sentence. thats enough indicator that i need rest.

so i dug a 36" hole 6" wide

i also weighed and measured all the cabers in our stable with the help of Carl and Al.

going to work as little as possible tomorrow.

i also made a Ronnie Coleman meme today with caber, i would upload it, but apparently everything i upload has malicious code.

yesterday, braemar to Ostone positions

lite weight for distance, really my first practice of the year. was working on that "driving it to zero" thing, felt good for a few throws, that Sullivan guy really has something there, will keep dialing it in and hoping it pays off, distances were all 55-59, completely mediocre for me, like so many times i read in peoples logs, "needs to be like (insert distance here)", i akin that to dudes in the gym like this;

"this dude i know squats 1000" says random guy
me "oh really"
"well, not really, but hes working on it"
me "thats FFFFFing great, well if you're throwing out imaginary numbers some random guy is working on, i guess i'm working on squatting 2000, because really im working on squatting as much as i possibly can in the amount of time im alive, so why not just be working on a million pound squat at that point"

back on track. then 15 sheaf tosses. i tried not blocking and just ripping thru it. that may work this season. putting the bar up on sunday and will find out.

tonight
squat up to 310x3x6 sets
strict press 115x3x6
starting snatching, ran out of steam.

my body needs to catch up. gotta realize i need to lift AND get throws in now. ive got most every other stressor in my life to a minimum, more weights and more throws now.

in other news, i built some effin badass sheaf standards. they dont sit on the ground, i have to dig a 3' hole then jam this plates with poles welded onto them into the ground. one also doubles as a fingal finger. also have an axle and a log (landrich) on the way plus a new sheaf bag (waddell). also got this 200# metal block, that should be fun for some stuff.

better not rain next weekend.

everyone needs some. imo, after a few vids get out of this strongman thing of the vintage short shorts, the crossfitters will start doing it and calling it their own, just and FYI you SAW IT HERE FIRST.

DL 135x10, 225,275x5, 315,365,405,455x1, 500x2 (PR, but was a hitch fest and felt sloppy), back down to 465x3 (3rep PR, much cleaner)
strict press 95x3x12
miniband pull aparts 10x6
lunges SSB 95x10x3
banded dips 10x3

lots of foaming and stretching after this session.

overall pretty happy with where i'm at. enough testing for this part of the year, some squats coming up with more pressing in the next 10 days, loads of mobility, lots of water and keeping on with the decent farm type foods i'm able to gather.

if i can figure out this gopro thing, i'll have a vid of lots of the April stuff up soon.

i'd consider you a loyalist.

Saturday
10braemars/10MSA's in the am
harvested and shaped 5 cabers in the afternoon, which is actually more taxing than turning them.

Sunday
put my shortest shorts on and threw 4 litehammers, comp style. first spray tacky of the season, love the smell. all 4 over 95', two over 98' which is my comp PR of last year with a long of 102', breaking 100' in practice feels good, will feel event better to get it on the books. lite hammer feeling good.

onto 56 for distance. second time this season with this, pulled the tape out. most at 27. nothing fantastic, but for my second session of the season i'm fine here. the weight does feel lighter than last year and this was much better than my first go round of 2013 with it. will get to work with this one more time before ALB, hoping and thinking a 30+ will be in reach by then. i tried using a strap to get more reps in, seemed like more of a hassle to me at this point, will try again though because the only thing holding me back from additional reps is my hand.

BN up to 280x7, rep PR
SQ to 400x5, rep PR
sumo DL 165,235x5, 305x3x3

felt pretty good, nice end to a long week. wanted to do a little testing and got a bit more than what i was shooting for, pumped with that. strangely the lift i care least about is the one thats come up the most, my bench. i feel like i've been neglecting overhead press, and im fine with that. now that i know my bench is coming up, it'll really mentally help me work my stones as much as possible so i dont finish with my head down looking down (mostly overhead press motion). need to start working more towards posting up on my left, driving with my right and finishing with my chest open and pushing from my chest, not my shoulders.

right now im smoking a corn cob pipe and drinking milk.  #truestory

also, to the 7 people that read my log, i havent done shit yet for the ALB games, work starts tomorrow, going to pick a few new cabers (my metal one was stolen, go figure), this week i need to get my sheaf rig in order as well, its going to double as a fingal fingers base, just gotta get the materials and get it fabbed up.

i also need to round up some extra items for the junk load in the strongman. so far i've got loadable kegs, atlas stone, natural stone, circus dumbell, tire and a hydrant. any ideas are welcome.

snatch 95x1x3, 145x 4/5, 155x1
mini band pull aparts 10x3
log press 90x5x2, 140x5x2

aint bad.
lots of throws over the weekend, hammer is feeling pretty solid, too some stone video, trying to do some self coaching, weights and sheaf still need lots of work in the next few weeks.

SQ 95, 135x10, 185, 225, 285x5, 340x5x2, 340x9
powercleans 89,110,130,154,174x2    then 204 clean with jerk
rack pulls 250,340,430,520,610x3, 700x1x2
shrugs 250x10x3

felt the best I have in about 3 weeks. the 340 for 9 was a rep PR, but thats kinda inconsequential, i just felt good. back to eating well.

thats also the first time i've cleaned over 200 since last Nov. also nothing crazy, but at least i'm trusting my hobbit arm more. that plus having to use my hips more is a great thing. although i turned some cabers on Sunday and by the third rip i had to shut her down because it was hurting real good like.

overall, i wanna reach my potential as a Highland Games guy, thats goal #1 (meeting some awesome folks is also part of this). looking at the big picture, i'm tiny. i need to work on as much strength and size as possible. so thats the plan this year. i'm also not good enough to be "peaking" or anything of the like. this year will be about continuing to get larger and stronger, even if i do get slower and less sexy. also working on dissecting my throws and upping my tech. once i get to where i need to be, then i'll start getting back into powerfactors, peak phases and all that fun stuff.

nothing crazy, but my schedule has been a bit cray the last two weeks, hoping this is the one that gets me back on track. the 405 DL's felt good, almost fast if you can believe that.

throws this afternoon

lots of stone breakdown, feeling good into and out of power position.
weight over bar, went 14' pretty easily with the 42 a few times. gonna keep swap to the 56 pretty soon.
lots of sheaf, first time throwing at....errrrr.....over a bar this season. nothing special. i gotta get some hops into this thing, my heights have been stagnant for the last few seasons. the left arm thing isnt helping much, but not seeming to hurt. so, either way, i gotta do some work here, MUST.GET.EXPLOSIVE.

weather is looking good for tomorrow afternoon as well, if so, hammers and weights.

thats all, not feeling it. not much motivation. i sit there in the gym and cant stop thinking about my footwork for open stone, how i need to drive to the trig in weights, etc. throwing season is upon me. need to get right with the weights again soon. dont want to fall backwards after i've had a decent 4-5 month run. surely a few weeks off will be good for my mind too. attack the season fresh and with purpose.

got out for the first legit practice of the year. set up trig, pulled the tape out. a few of my ALB folks came to join.

stones are moving along, feeling a decent push. working on separation on the center, keeping my left arm long over my right knee, work in progress. no numbers to report, was throwing a lite stone, didnt even pay attention to marks.

LWFD didnt feel great, defo need to get back the tech back here. averaged 55, which is fine for now. that was actually around last years practice PR and i went 61 last year. hoping to move the practice numbers to around 60 and set up for 65ish come comp time.

LH averaged 92-94 and all within a 6' diameter, consistency ftw! long of 96. considering all my comp throws last year were around 92 with the exception of one rogue 98+ guy that's my PR, I'll take it. Didnt really feel like I got all of any of them, would like to move the practice averages up to 100, then 105ish come game day.

sheaf and weight for height. lots of rips. felt decent enough, just happy to just be outside doing work. will bar up next week.

overall pretty encouraging to come out of the gate with decent numbers for me and all while getting over a cold.

I am very determined to be the most mediocre throwing of NASGA this year, and with numbers like these, I think I'm right where I need to be.
