Thanks for not embarrassing me TOO much with the video :-) It's really nice to see I am actually using my legs for the vertical jumps. Soon, with practice, I hope to be able to translate all this into further throws and better heights.

Little update here- I actually hit 700 miles on the LAST ride to work. Today was a skills test, after part of my route was ground down for road work.

I am setting a lofty goal of 1000 miles by summer. General calculations put that at about 15 rides to and from work or the equivalent. Twice a week means about 8 weeks- make it 3 months, since I can't guarantee I can make it twice a week.

Good day throwing! Almost 70 ft with light hammer, almost 50 ft with LWFD, hit the bar 3x @ 13 ft in WOB, 25' and change in Open Stone (a heavy open... not the 8# one the SHA has), PRed 16' on the Sheaf (I know, pitiful...). Caber was fun- we have a small, light one, and that was a breeze, but I got to pick one of the new cabers that's either a novice/B men's or challenge women's... It's like 16' 60-65#. Picked it twice, got 30 degrees the second time. Even put on a good show with the farmer's walk. They didn't really have "women's" weights, so we took two 42#ers and ran those for speed. Then, just for giggles, I grabbed the Master's 105#ers. If I hadn't hit myself in the leg 15' from the end, I would have made it! Kristina made up the difference tho! Thanks Babe! You're awesome!!

And thanks to Alan for organizing an amazing day of throwing, fun and friendship!

It was a great day out there, today. YAY you with that 16 in the sheaf, and you were killer in the farmers walk.  I was seriously impressed with your picks and controlling the Boar caber, that is NOT an easy stick.

Reporting in for Bethany, who doesn't have computer access this week.

weights for distance night, last night.  She showed up in her scrubs!

HWFD...

8 first turn drills...dump the weight behind her.  Awesome.  She's good at this.

8 single spins....she's still standing up but it's getting better. She's "down" in the setup for the first spin, but she (like me) stands up in the transition to the next position. However, it's getting better. She's got room for some lift when it comes to the delivery point.

8 full throws...a little out of control, but distances around 30 feet.

LWFD

8 first turn drills....kickass.  I wish I was as consistent as Bethany is at this.

8 single spins.... again, stands up more than she should, but it's getting *better*.  She has room for some "lift" in the legs and knees at the delivery.  Distances in the high 30's if I remember right.

8-10  full throws..  First 4-5 were her usual. she is improving in the "get down, stay down" department.  Then I told her to quit being nice to the implement and go for raw speed, to trust that she knew what to do. WHOOIIIEEE.... 57-58 foot throws.  This is a TEN FOOT improvement over a couple of weeks ago.

Pretty Happy girl at the end of this practice.

It's better to get low as you plant your feet at the end of the first turn.  If you try to get low before the turn (and stay there), you tend to hit the ground with the weight in your preliminary swings (or squat higher than you should).

That's pretty much what we bioth do....me more than Bethany. We start low in the "backswing", but then rise up as we use impetus from the legs to get the weight moving in the cast.

The challenge is then twofold....

1. get back down again as the weight comes around the we reverse our feet...and
2. don't stand up (too much, anyway) in the transition to the second spin position.

Off the wagon again... sigh... I wonder how many times I will fall off before I learn how to stay on.

I kinda forgot to figure in the games schedule when I planned on riding 1000 miles by July 1. I'm either going to have to extend my deadline, or the weekend before do a major ride to SF or something to make up the difference.

Good final work out for the week, pre-Woodland. Was hitting 73'-75' with light hammer, 55'ish LWFD, 27' with a really funky, but surprisingly effective light stone technique (Oddly enough I'm using a modified Tae Kwon Do sliding side kick movement), easy over 13' for WOB.  Flipped my baby caber, got a good pick on "The Boar caber " 16ft 50ish lbs(?)

Feeling pretty good about Woodland. I mentioned to Alan at one of the last practices I've got more practice  the last 4 months that I have in almost the last 4 years!! Yay job that allows me to practice, give me free unlimited access to an excellent gym, and doesn't stress me out!!

More than pleased with throwing this weekend! Throws went further than I've thrown in quite some time, even one of the judges told me I was throwing better than he'd seen in years!

Special thanks to Alan for being an awesome friend, supporter and training partner, and thank you to everyone else for your tips, encouragement and support! I appreciate you all, and appreciate the community that has been created here.

I did it, I did it, I did it!!!! At 2024 last night I hit 1000 miles on the bike!! Woo hoo!!! Looking back over the last posts, looks like I did 300 miles in the last 3 months, but since I started counting some time after I started this new job, I know I did all 1000 miles in the last 6-7 months. YAY ME!!! And according to a friend, since I did it all on my ancient mountain bike (23 years old, steel frame, weighs a ton) that qualifies me as "hard core" :-) After a little research I found road bikes with slick tires will go an average of 2 mph faster with the same effort. Makes me feel better about getting passed by all those road bikers :-) If anyone remembers the movie Jumanji, there's a scene where Robin Williams yells, "Stampede!!" and there are a bunch of wild animals running down the street. And a couple seconds behind the main group, comes a rhino huffing and puffing along... that was me! :-)

So... goal accomplished, feeling great! Now to set a new goal :-) I'm open to suggestions?
