Power block, week three, day three.
6x1@95% power clean and jerk (225), power snatch (170)
3x5 seated box jumps with a 20# med ball
3x5 rotational cable throws
3x5 one legged box jumps
EMOM 8 rounds sprints
One minute max effort row, 1:24 pace

I ate Mexican food before hand and thought I would get more time to digest before lifting than I did. The workout was a bit lackluster.

HWD:
Cast and drop x 5
One turn x 5
Full throw x 10
Big PR of 33'4." My cast feels off, but the rest of the throw feels good, though I am still trying to bring my final orbit lower.

Light hammer:
10-15 full throws. I never even hit 90'. This could be because I was pretty tired, but I think it's because I was too slow on my final wind. That light hammer is fast.

Sheaf:
5 bottom drillls
11 full throws.
I was going for accuracy, not height.

My gut has been a bit off lately, so, inspired by a post Matt Vincent put up on NASGA, I got some psyllium husks and downed them tonight before bed. I also got some probiotics, which I've been out of for a while now. Come ooooon, gut health!

I really tried to ramp up the volume of training this week, trying to incorporate more accessory work and a metcon with each workout.

Fiber supplement for the win.

4/17 was a scheduled rest day, and 4/18 turned into one because Rachel wanted some topsoil for garden spaces, some of which needed to be tilled, but the tiller wouldn't run. So now there are two big piles of dirt in the yard.

On the bright side, I found a new open stone between the topsoil and compost piles. They asked $10 but took $1. 16.8#.

Test week is this week (in the gym, that is. Tests in the classroom are next week.), and it will probably spill over into deload week, as it almost always seems to do.

Training was stalled again due to a sick boy who needed to be cared for. My gainz! I feel them slipping away!

I got a sub today because Connor felt terrible last night and Rachel was working. He felt fine all day, so I got to train. Yea!

Open stone: (16.8)
5x stand, no reverse
5x with reverse
10 or 11 full throws.
Decent. About 41' again. I was having a weird problem of hitting the trig with my left foot coming out of the back when I initiated the glide.
10 or so LWD full throws before I had to take Connor to karate. 60' best throw.

Test week! Day one.
90% rep test: back squat: 300x1x11=410 calculated 1rm. New working max of 370; incline: 175x1x10=233 calculated 1rm. New working max of 210.
My shoulder feels like it's almost 100%, so I should be able to make steady progress with bench and incline.
3x10 glute bridge@225
3x5 floor press@135
3x10 low cable rows@140 just to promote shoulder health. I must have a good pulling session after my pushing exercises, or my shoulder gets wonky.
7 rounds EMOM: 3 135# thrusters, 3 30" box jumps.
1 minute max effort row: 1:29 pace. Slooooow, but I was pretty gassed.

Really sore after the previous day's workout, so I was just getting in the reps.
Sheaf: 5 bottom drills
5 tosses to try and get it in an area (this drill needs a name)
5-6 full throws

WOB: about 15. I hit the fabled branch a time or two.

Caber: 3 pick and carries and two or three full throws before Connor said his tummy hurt and he wanted to go home.

4/23
Late night push press and deadlift rep test at 90% (195, 385). Robinson joined me too, which was cool.
5 push presses. LAME! Maybe I warmed up too quickly and tired myself out, or maybe the yard work I did earlier in the day wore me out, but man did I expect to do better than 5. I will keep my previous working max, I suppose, since this calculated to 219lbs, 21lbs off my previous max (which was an actual 1rm).

Deadlifts were good: 385x11. 526 calculated max. 475 is my new working max.

Pullups: 20: 7, 6, 4, 2, 1

One arm rows: 3x10@120

My shoulders, while they let me down a bit on presses, are feeling good.

After incline you did an EMOM with an overhead press. That adds to shoulder fatigue too!

That occurred to me as well. I had hoped three rest days would have takes care of it, but perhaps I was wrong.

Open stone:
Standing, no reversex5
Standing, reversex5
Full glidex11
Bad throws today. I was still feeling the push presses from the other day, but I got in the reps.

HWD:
Cast and dropx5
One turnx5
Full throwx10
I got one good throw to 31' purely on will. I felt the deadlifts pretty badly on this one, and I kept my final orbit flatter than I would have liked, but I got in the reps.

I had a small audience the whole time too, and Rachel brought me coffee ice cream afterwards. That was wonderful. I'm really looking forward to my deload week. But first, Olympic lifting tests today.

Power clean and power snatch test

I worked up to 260 on clean for a PR, but my shoulders were pretty tight and tired from the past week, so snatch didn't go up very well. 185 went up fine, but I decided to just go for a PR at 205, three times. They turned into high pulls. That's OK.

It's time to deload and peak for Triad and Smoky Mountain.

Smoky last year was my first game, where I finished third in the novice division. I look forward to giving a good performance there this year as an A.

I haven't done anything in three days because life. Thank God it's a deload week; however, this is not helping me peak for Triad and Smoky Mountain.

Throws training later today, I hope, and perhaps the next two days as well. I need beard oil too, as I'm almost out and a luxurious beard is critical to my throwing success.

Sheaf:
Bottom drill x5
Throwing for accuracy x5
Full throws x5

WOB:
15 or so throws. I beat the crap out of that limb at 14'9" but didn't clear it.

Caber:
3 (I think) pick and carries. Maybe 10 full throws. No flip. Damn.

5/2/2016
Peak season training: two weeks out from competition, with Smoky Mountain being my target.
3x3 back squat@70%: 135x1x3; 260x2x3
3x3 incline@70%: 95x1x3; 145x1x3

Cable rows: 160x3x10

RKC snatch test with a 50# KB: 5 minutes to get 100 snatches. I had 20 something seconds left.

5/3/2016
Braemar:
5 no reverse
5 with reverse

Open stone: 10 throws. They really sucked. I don't think I hit 40, but the ground was wet and I wasn't wearing my cleats.

I had planned to do more, but I was not focused at all because of personal issues.

Three days to Triad, and May the fourth be with you.

Peak season, day two, two weeks out from Smoky
Mobility:Lacrosse ball work on my shoulders
Push press: 95x1x3; 150x2x3
DL: 225x1x3;335x2x3

3x10 140# lat pulldowns

I wanted to throw afterwards, but I needed to feed the kids and get them home.

5/5
LWD drills:
Cast and drop x5
Line drills x5
One turns x5
I didn't get to full throws, and my training has been terrible the past two weeks. Life can be a real bitch.

Mark and I drive to Greensboro today. My brothers and my throws will help me to heal.

Triad
Fourth overall, again.
5 PRs on the day, but two of them were on events that didn't count toward the day's total, and I bombed heavy hammer and caber.
Braemar: 35' first place, but it didn't count
Open stone: 42' 8.5" 2nd place.
HWD: 29' 4"? 5" games PR, but I still throw much better in practice.
LWD: 62' something. PR
Heavy hammer: 71' awful.
Light hammer: 100' 2" PR, but it didn't count toward today's total.
Caber: I don't know what happened here. I had three easy picks. The first pull was simply late, an easy fix. But the next two pulls were weird and ugly. Boo. I don't know what I got. Something awful.
Sheaf: 26' If we had gone to 28' I might have had the height for it, but we went to 29'.
WOB: 14'. Calves cramped up and I couldn't get a strong pull.

Good day, all! I posted this on the general forum, but thought I'd ask anyone who may be reading this too.
Nutrition:
  • How do you all go about loading/fueling before and during a competition? I have tried eating donuts all day, which worked pretty well, but I couldn't crap for two days afterwards.
  • This past weekend, I found a pretty good balance of bananas, sandwiches, and a few donuts. It worked pretty well, but I feel that just loading up on carbs and energy drinks (coffee, a C4 drink, two Five Hour Energys) might not be the best thing.

Cramping:
  • Two of the past three games I've had calf cramps during WOB, and they even happened during heavy hammer and sheaf my last game. It's not a hydration or electrolyte issue, as I had a gallon of water the day before, and a gallon of Gatorade, half a gallon of water, and a quart of Pedialyte during the game.
  • It could simply be a tension issue, so I'll definitely try some stretching and deep tissue work before my next game. I also thought it could be a vitamin B deficiency.
  • Any tips on either other possible causes or potentially helpful exercises would be very helpful.

Caber:
Pick and carry x3
Full throws x10ish
I totally bombed caber again at Triad, and I think I may have been initiating the pull with my arms--my skinny arms that are as accustomed to curls as my truck is to driving in the Daytona 500.

5/11
Peak season, day one: ten days out from Maryville.
3x2@75% back squat (280), incline (160)
3x10 cable rows at 140#.

Heavy hammer: 10 full throws to a 74' best. the first few throws felt better than the final few. I felt like I lost quickness on the turnover from my left side to my right side.

I flipped my caber. I did more things too, but none of them are important. I've trained other days too, but I honestly don't feel like writing them right now.

Jeremy,
Don't know if you've seen this before, but this is a link to Dan McKim's blog:https://believethrower.com/blogs/news/100126726-games-day-nutrition-and-supplementaion

It has some good info on gameday nutrition and supplementation.

Thanks for the link. I pretty much do those things, or things that give the same effect, and still get cramps during WOB. I'm going to try salting my Gatorade this Saturday, taking a magnesium supplement, taking B vitamins, and doing some tissue smashing and stretching in my calves leading up to the event. Of course, it's supposed to thunderstorm, so it might not be the best test.

5/21: Smoky Mountain Highland Games
Better late than never. There has been entirely too many interesting developments in my life to keep up with this lately.
But here's a recap.
One year ago, I finished third in the novice division at Smoky; today I finished second in the A's.
Hammer: 84', a big PR, and third place
Open stone: 42' 1" for 4th
HWD: 33'3" for a big PR and second place.
LWD: 65'11" for a PR and third place with the tie breaker.
Caber: 50 degrees. 8th, I think, still my worst event.
Sheaf: 23' for second place. We all struggled with a wet, heavy bag.
WOB: 14' for second place. No cramps.
