Don't worry Mikey, it's always better to be Ron Howard than Clint Howard.

Thanks, Matt.  It was right up there with my best/most complete competition.  I am hoping it will be the standard for my throwing.

I have a been a bit derelict in my logging duties.  Busy.  Between work, getting ready to move, getting in QT with the wife and kids, and training, not much spare time.

But, I am stuck at home with Strep throat today, and maybe tomorrow, so I have spent a goodly amount of time on the interwebz today.  Not Craig Smith interwebz time, but a good amount.

I'll add a few make-up posts . . .

28 April 2012  Southern Maryland HG

OS - 44'6"    Thumbs Down
HWFD - 38'   new PR   Thumbs Up
LWFD - 72'1"
HH - 101'9"   best HH since 2007
LH - 122'5"
caber 18' 130lbs - 1145
sheaf - 30'
wob - 15'   first time to clear since 2008 SoMD
braemar - 37'2"   new PR   Thumbs Up

Overhead stone - 53'3"  new PR   LOL
empty keg toss - 54'6"

Well, I was really looking forward to having a good day at SoMD b/c it will effectively be my last open comp with my MASA family.  I put in one of my best days so far and managed a win over some good throwers.  I can't tell you how many times I have thrown with Beau and John and multiple events have come down to inches and the overall has been tight.  I can remember once, I think it was Triad in 2007 when the 3 of us were separated by 2.5 inches in the HWFD.  This kind of thing has happened many, many times.
And, it has been a great deal of fun.
So, had a blast.  It was wet and slick to start things of and none of us could get a good push on the stone.  I kept slipping out of the back.  Funny thing, I packed the left cleat I use for soft/slick ground, then pulled it out thinking I would get by without it.  Oh well.

Weights were good despite being a bit out of sync with the implement.  I was able to get a good pull in the finish with the HW and had 4 or 5 throws over 37'.  LW, just wasn't catching it.

Hammers obviously went well.  I opened with a 97+ and then hit 101+ on the 2nd and 100+ on the 3rd.  Didn't take extras with the plan to crush the LH.  Had several over 120+.  Thing that is very nice about these numbers is that SoMD is flat and even has a bit of a rise/hump about 80' out from the triq we were throwing off of.

caber was a thick, no taper beastie.  They said it was 18' and 130#s.  I believe them.  Very pleased to have turned it all 3 times.  On my first attempt I missed the base and caught it about 10 inches up.  I was able to control it, pop it up and get my hands under it.  Then run and hit a 1230, I think.  was exciting

sheaf just wasn't popping off the fork.  not sure why.  I will throw it higher next time.

I was real happy with the pull and a clean clear at 15' on the WOB.  All the pulling I did in the offseason has paid off.  I think I have more there.  Goal will be to go 16' in 2013.

Since we moved through all the events so fast, we finished all these before 3, Alex let us throw the braemar and even a couple circus events.  Things started getting a little silly with the braemar.  I rubbed chalk all over my face, a la John Davis, and hit a freaking PR in the braemar.  I was yelling and hamming it up and when I released the stone I looked over at BJ, Beau, and John and was yelling something and they were all making faces like "shite, that was a big toss".  Friggin 37'2" for a new PR.  hahahaha    well, looks like I will be taking copious amounts of chalk to all my events.  hahaha

OH stone and keg toss were a blast.

Bottom line:  I was hoping to have a big year in 2012 and finally get over the hump from 2008.  After getting so sick in the latter half of 2008 it has been a long road back.  2009 - 2010 were kind of lost years.  I think it took a while for my body to fully recover coupled with working too much and adding a second kid to the mix.  Finally started getting back on track in 2011.

Luckily, I have a very, very supportive and understanding wife.

So, I hope 2012 continues towards being my best year ever.

I was down in NC for work all last week.  Living out of a hotel and having coworkers who wanted to have a good time after work each day was a little rough.  But, I managed to get two decent lifting sessions in (even if I was a tad hungover).

2 May    Snatch/Squat
dwu
lite snatches - 135 x 2 x 5 sets
speed squat - upto 315 x 2 x 5

3 May  Speed push/pull
dwu
PP - upto 225 x 2 x 4 sets
RDL PS - upto 315 x 2 x 4 sets
Bench -  upto a 315x2

I was surprised with how easy the bench was going up.  Intended on doing a couple of lite sets for speed.  But, took it up to a little bit of weight, instead.

Jeez, that looks like roadkill on my face.

Had strep throat over the weekend and into Tuesday.  Hit a light speed workout on Wednesday.

All about speed:

dwu
snatch - upto 155 for several sets of doubles
bench - 135 for several sets of doubles
jump squat - 135 several sets of 3

12May12   Frederick Highland Games write up:

This was the best competition I've had so far in my career.  4 PRs and the rest were very close.

The numbers:

Braemar - 38'8" pr   (1st)
OS - 49'   (1st)
HWFD - 39'3" pr     (3rd)
LWFD - 76'3"     (3rd)
HH - 107'3" pr    (1st)
LH - 129'9" pr     (1st)
caber - 16'6"x140 x 1145   (2nd)
WOB - 14'   (tied 1st)

Overall - 1st

The braemar was listed as 25# but it tucked nicely and I was getting a great push on it.  I think all my throws were 37+.  The work I put in on my standing throws during the OS and so far this year has paid off.  I had a PR at SoMD, and bested it by over a foot here.  It really comes down to having seriously engaging the left side and blocking.  Something I haven't really done well or at all in years past.
Open stone was good too, though I never really got ahold of one.  I didn't really get my head up on the 49 footer.   The box had a slight slope and I think the slight reach to get the left down threw me off a tad.   I am looking for 50' before the year is out.
HWFD went well.  All 3 throws were over 38', with a big PR on the 3rd.  John Collins followed me and blasted it out to 40'1" and then Beau blew past that with a big 40'10".  I have most of these throws on video.  Was a real pleasure to see John and Beau break the 401' barrier after all these years.  And, it was like de ja vu to see the three of us one upping each other in each event.
LWFD went pretty well, but I feel like I was just a hair off with it.  I continue to be just off of really big throws with both.  Anyway, I hit the 76'3" on my final throw just to have John and Beau one up me, again.
The hammers started a little shaky with me just missing both of my first two HH throws.  I went into my last throw trailing John by over a foot.  I was able to get sync'd up with it and hit a 101+ for the win.  Big Mike P was taking extras, so I rolled with him and got ahold of a new PR out at 107'3".  This felt great and I could tell that it was a good throw when I released it.
LH started out with a monster (for me) throw.  Of the 6 throws, all were over 125 with 3 over 127.  In looking at pics that Alex took, I see that I can lay out more and extend my arms more.  I think that I can continue to push the hammers and hopefully break 130 with the light this year.
Caber was interesting b/c we did a qualifier for the crowd before lunch, but came back and did the event for scores later.  Both cabers looked tougher than they were.  The competition caber was thick, heavy, with basically no taper, but only 16' or so long.  So, not to difficult to turn.
WOB was a little disappointing, but at this point I was pretty smoked.  I simply didn't throw it high enough on my first two attempts at 15', and had the height but left it out front on the 3rd.

All in all, a very fun and satisfying day.  The work I did in the off season has definitely paid off, both the strength/power development and technical work.  I am a little bit stronger/more powerful than I've ever been.  And, I am technically the best I've ever been.  So, the results are what I had hoped for and expected.

It was a real pleasure throwing and hanging out with Mike Pockoski, Eric Frasure, Jeremy Gillingham, and Mike Zolkowicz (I hope I spelled that right).   These guys are great throwers and class acts.  They didn't put on any airs and were happy to provide tips and pointers to us all, and they talked smack with us, too.  If you get a chance to take part in a Pro/Am I hope you have pro's like these to share the field with.  I think competing alongside them elevated all of our efforts.

Lastly, let me thank the MASA and Frederick crews for providing a great venue for us.  It was a great time.

Just thought I would make a note here:

I've competed 5 times this year.  2 masters comps and 3 Am comps.  I have hit 10 new PRs so far.

I think the combination of the strength/power focus in the off season lifting, along with the throwing throughout the off season has obviously paid off for me.

My body really responded to the lifting program.  And, the throwing, to include the T&F stuff, not only helped me maintain timing, feel, balance, core strength, etc.,  but improve on it and come out more technically proficient.

I still have plenty of room for improvement, but I am happy with my progress and feel like I have definitely upped my game a notch.

It is good to be back on the path to improvement that I fell off of in 2008 following the diverticulitis and the ensuing "lost years" of 2009 and 2010.

Those are some big throws.  Consistent in every event.  Good mix of strength, power, and technical improvements in the off-season.  Even bigger throws coming. Nice work.

really delinquent on posting my workouts.  life has been a little crazy.

Tues    light throwing
dwu
lwfd - some line drills, and progressions:  standing, single turn, double turn, about three of each
WFH - about 10 pulls.  working on countering and driving hips

pace count on my lwfd suggested throws were out around 80'.  so, took the tape measure out with me today.   the three full throws were 75-79+.  that makes for a nice little practice PR

Wednesday    snatch/squat
dwu
snatch - upto 185x2
squat - upto 405x2

Today    stone session
dwu
standing with a 19.6# stone - about 4 throws 38-40+
OS - about 10 throws 47-51+
MSA with 19.6# stone - about 3 throws 42-43+

Alaska HG has a 20# open stone.  prepping for that.  it was hot.  sweating like Duncan at a buffet.  nice session, though.

Moving back to TX one month from tomorrow.  holy cow!  Shocked

Been a bit of a stressful last few months...but it's time to get back on the path and get it together.  The plan is to begin rebuilding my body after some ongoing health issues.

This weekend is AK games and will be my last game for about a year. The next few months are about getting healthier.

Today:
BS x 6

Had a nice massage therapy session yesterday.  My massage therapist, who happens to be a Team Dickens sponsor:  check out Essential Wellness Massage at  http://www.essentialwellnessmassage.com/ , hooked me up with some body memory recall therapy.  Shite broke me off.  But, the good news is that she was able to loosen up my right hip which has been tight for a couple of weeks now.

had a very light throwing day today:
provided some tutelage to my real close frien' P. Beauregard Fay on how I go about taping my hand and hook
light hammer -  several easy throws
lwfd - a few progressions, standing, single, and about 3 fulls
OS - several MSA with the 19.6#er

Headed up to AK this weekend for a games in the quasi-Yukon.  Looking forward to it.
