If Greg starts throwing heavy hammer in the 80's before July I think I'm going to take up another hobby or something...

Two hours throws with Ted Joseph this eve...
softball throws warmup some Open Stone, probably a dozen tosses until Ted's elbow started hurting, so we knocked that off. No reason to mess that thing up in the first workout of the year. First turn drills (5-6) with the womens 14 and then sprint phase drills with the 14 ..LOTS of them. I'm focusing on getting on my toes, because Greg York has made me paranoid about it, and quick-quick-quick. Then first turn drills with the 28'er (5) and more sprint phase drills...again, on the toes, quick, drive the hip through and out front with the delivery. Finished up with three full two-spin throws, all over 50, one possibly 54, depending on how accurate my paces are. My back is sore so we pulled out the womens hammer and wound that in sets of 5-6 winds. I'm just NOT in the groove, here, but am trying to work on lifting the hammer to a high point behind me. Did about 30 winds, then 6 throws...*reach* for that high point, relax, and get my head outta the way at the delivery. Throws about 90-94 feet. Ted packed it up and I stuck around for some glides with my 15.8 rock. I finally swopped out the cleats on my right foot for smooth discus shoes, and wow...*big* difference. I'm staying low and making that foot get active when I hit the middle of the trig. Damn...there's some *boinggg** in the old man. Lots of 32-33, and one nice one out to 34, I pulled tape on it. These still aren't farther than I can stand that stone, but it's COMING...slowly. |

Sore back is messin' me up, and I know I'll be throwing again tonight, so I thought I'd go do some stuff to work out the kinks...
stationary bike warmup ... 5 min stretch cage, the usual narrow grip hip snatch ... 2 x 5 x 95 / 2 x 5 x 115 / couple at 125, but I was having to press them up and that ain't the point so I knocked off. FAST incline db press .... 3 x 8 x 55 *throw* those things through the ceiling! pull - ups ...because I haven't done 'em in a while..5, 2, 2 with 85 lb assist. Pathetic. bar dips... see above, however, 2 x 5 x 70 lb assist and then 5 with 50 l;b assist. Not too shabby> And then I spent about 40 minutes foam rolling me butt, quads, groin, hip flexors.... more upper body/shoulder stretches in the cage... |

I set an audacious goal (for me) because my inability to throw this thing is pissin' me off and pissin' myself off tends to be my best motivation strategy. Right now, however, based on progress the last two months, your other hobbies will be gathering dust for the foreseeable future! |

I dunno, Greg. Your weights and stones came along pretty darned fast and they're still improving. Josh sez y'all all throwing 80-something. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see you go low 80's in your first Games. BTW, are you managed to get some practice time in with a caber?
-------------------------- Last night throws... Tim, Bethany, Alan and Ted... yes I lifted and threw on the same day. softball throws warmup WOB for a while, probably about 8-9 throws each. My hips are STILL recovering from my "speed workout" a week and a half ago, and lousy sleep on the futon for two weeks hasn't helped. I foam rolled bigtime yesterday and that helped, but there's still some healing to do. I'm low on *pop* Standing WOB was OK...spins sucked. I need to work on that. We can spin at Ardenwood, Bakersfield, Woodland and the MWC. The first four Games I'm doing this year all allow spinning in WOB. I probably should get a little better at it. I've cleared 14 in practice... Then we did some LWFD...bunch of sprint phase drills. Bethany yelled at me to keep my butt down, and when I did, I actually got two out to almost 50 feet. We followed that up with a few LWFD two-turns. Again, gotta keep my butt down, lock the angle in my right knee and don't stand up until delivery. Did about 4 throws, all over 50 except the first one that I practically fell down on. It's entertaining that even that one went 45. I followed that up with some HWFD with the 42. Need to be careful not to foul out the back, but all throws over 30 with one biggie at 34. This is coming along well. After everybody went home I did some glide open stone, probably about a dozen, with my 15.8 stone. I tried to stay low coming across the grass, but hit the middle with my back foot pre-turned -- then rotate it hard and KABOOM. It all went pretty well, lots of throws at 32, one at 33+, one probably around 34. This is much, much better than it was last year. I might be able to see 34-35 in this by the end of the season, if this keeps up. |

I've had an opportunity to try a few turns at some real cabers, but I don't get much practice. I built one, but made it way too big, so I need to build a smaller one. Bystanders say I have a great natural pick and zero, but it's all downhill after that. There are plenty of events for me to suck at, so fear of caber suckiness isn't keeping me up at night.
That's great! My sprint is a debacle! This week end is going to be all about slower, lower, hip aligned zeros and the extermination of heal pivots. I don't care if I go so slow I drop the damn thing on my toe at the end of the trig. |

I forgot to mention that you've got me thinking about throwing LWFD up on my toes, now. Between that and "butt down" and Dons suggestion abo9ut getting into the first turn, LWFD is looking good at this point. It will really suck if I don't go over 50 at 2 out of 3 of my first Games this season. |

Sunday throws. I'd advertised it to pretty much everybody in the CHAC but the iffy weather kept everybody else home but me.
Hammer day. I did about 50 winds in sets of 8 or 10. This burned up my core and IT bands pretty fast, but I'm getting better. The mojo is slowly coming back. I worked hard at being way over on the right, big-time. Then did about 8 single-turn-and-deliver, because Duncan does 'em and he's The Man and they look useful. These started out well and went downhill. Best of about 81. RELAX, grasshopper. Then did about a dozen full-throws. These were OK, nothing special but I didn't fall all over myself and my radius is pretty good. That's better than how things have been going so far this season. I'm keeping my head out of the way at the delivery, which is good. Distances are off by about 5-8 feet which sucks, but it'll get there. At this point I was toast, but I went ahead and did some open stone glides. MUST get my left side active...MUST. This is ridiculous. Then did some Braemar with my 21.5 pounder and this was actually pretty reasonable, everything well over 25, mostly 26-ish, one @ 27, which is PR country. I finished up with 8 sprint phase drills with the 28'er, and I was completed fried. And THEN I went and made a new 10 pound and a new 16 pound sheaf. My 16 is light, but I've stuffed the bag as full as I can with straw. I'm gonna have to weasel a 4 pound rock into the middle of the thing. |

Goals between now and Ardenwood (April 14th)
1. get mah hammer mojo back on track, even if the #'s aren't quite up where they should be. No more throwing myself all over the place, lock it in. 2. drill the LWFD until the new first turn technique and "butt down" is second nature. I don't want to think, just want to DO in the trig 3. Drastically improve my pissant feeble left side in Braemar and Open Stone. If I do this, the numbers will come. Practices: Wed-Thurs March 28-29 --- Sunday April 1st --- wed-thurs April 4-5 --- Light drills wed April 11th |

Solo workout tonight.
Started out with some stone throw warmups Then 75% crank standing throws, REALLY ramming the left side around. Did about 8 of those. Then 8 full-crank standing throws with the 16.2 stone...everything at 31 feet...good but not outstanding. Then about a dozen glides. Started out awful, got better. Everything after the first two at 31. So my glides really truly are on par with my standing throws, now. AND,. they're reproducible. It's time to start gliding in competition. I did two with the 15.8 stone..HAHAHA...33 feet. Hammer... 40 winds in sets of 6-8 --- MUCH better tonight. Then about a dozen full throws, go hard. Started out poorly with a couple around 77-78, then settled in. Everything else at 80-81 with two at 83+. This is still off a bit, but the mojo is coming back. Then some Braemar stone, just for yucks, about 8 throws. Tried to really hit the block super-hard after watching some video of Beth Burton throw Braemar at the WWC.. Nice! Everything at 26-27, a few threatening to go almost 28. This is with my 21. 5 stone. Happy with this. |

I've been considering this for several weeks, but I think now's the time.... I'm ending this log, at least for now. It's been incredibly useful, but things change, and I'm "there". Who knows, I may start it up again, sometime in the future.
I still log elsewhere. Anyone who's just dying to see what I'm up to, just let me know and I'll tell you where it is. I also regularly post workouts on Facebook. |

Sad to see you go Alan. As an old n00b, it was good to see you in here. Much as the young'uns try to help, they don't really get us geriatric types - physically or psychologically.
You were a helpful bridge into a sport that had helped me push more enthusiastically on rehab than I had been/would have otherwise. Fun as this sport is, if this forum had been all Vincents and Smiths and the like, I doubt I'd have engaged quite like I did because their capacities are so impossibly unattainable when starting this late. but, I'm a hell of a lot healthier than I was 6 months ago, and you and KiltBill were role models that are partially to thank for that. I'd advise you to stay, if only to help continue to build a community more like us so there are more like us to play with. But, if you choose to roll, as I spot codgers, I'll nudge them toward you on Facebook.

Oh, I'll still be reading NASGA, and I'll still post my usual insightful comments in the "General" area. You're not all rid of me, yet. I just am no longer as motivated by this log as I was last year, or even four months ago. I have little technical insight to contribute, there are many, many more experienced athletes on the forum, than me. So, nuff of the log for a while......but just the log..

I think I needed a break from the drama and testosterone, to roll around in my own testosterone for a while. I'm going to try logging here again, and see how it works out with my head.
WOODLAND RESULTS Took third overall against the usual suspects, plus kind of new guy Dennis Schultz and several completely new guys in the class. One of them lives in San Jose, says he'll be joining us for practice, and that's great. Braemar Stone...I'm on a roll, throwing over 27 feet a lot in practice, I went 27' 5.5" at Woodland. So I've gone over 27 feet in the last two Games. Very Happy with this. Open Stone.... 30' 3" ... This sucks. I should be consistently over 32 by now and this is just plain pissing me off. Kind of sick of it. Heavy Hammer ... we opened with this, actually, which was a shock. 66' 7.5". Anything over 65 is a good day, but I have that 68' 10" at Ardenwood on my mind, and the 68+ that I put up at Pleasanton. Light Hammer ... a so-so series of throws. I topped out at 80' 11.5"...sheesh, Mark, just give me 81 willya? Anything over 80 is a good day, but I really want to be seeing 86-88's by now. I'm kind of stuck, here.HWFD ... after a comically disastrous first throw, I settled down and did fine on the next two, topping out at 32' 7.5", which is pretty darned good for me. It was only Ventura, last year that I first threw solidly past 30 feet (34 feet...out of nowhere). Now I've done it at Bakersfield and Ardenwood and Woodland, all of them over 31 feet. This is a big breakthrough for me, and is solidified now. I spent two years trying to throw 27 feet. My new benchmark is "anything over 31 is a good day" whereas at the end of last season it was "anything over 28 is a good day". Light weight for distance....first throw at 48 and change, but felt jerky. Second throw, I cleared out WAY too much room in the first turn, charged WAY too hard and not straight-onto the board and finished the throw a good two-three feet OUTSIDE the trig. Hey it was good for some laughs around the 50's class. I threw it easily over 50 feet, but...uh....Ya gotta stay in the box. I tightened up my first turn for the last one, and it was smooth, if lacking in punch a bit and I'm pleased with 49 ' 9". Sti l in the hunt for 50+ WOB, stayed relaxed, got 13 easily on my second throw and that's always good. I probably had 13' 6" in me -- hit the bar twice at 14, but no love I'm going to work on more leg speed over the next few weeks and see if I can't get that 14 at the MWC.. Caber, .... fell into my usual habit of pulling late and didn't turn The Lion. I hung one up there at about 88 degrees, though. C'mon the WIND blew it over the wrong way....*ahem*...OK, maybe not. |

I'm
going to get back in the gym and lift 2x a week and probably throw 2x a
week for the next three weeks, then take 6 days off before Greeneville.
I've been mulling over, what to focus on.--- I could try to make my worst
throws better, *maybe*, or try to make my best events even better *more likely*.
Conventional wisdom says to work on what you're bad at, but I've been doing that for a long time with very little to show for it.... though I seem to be on a roll with Braemar Stone. My Open Stone is significantly off from my other events, but hours upon hours of work appear to be getting me nowhere. I thin it's time to move on for a while. Sometimes when you walk away from practicing an event so much, things click In absentia. So I think it's gonna be hammer, LWFD /HWFD and caber for the next three weeks on the field, and working on leg speed/strength for WOB in the gym. Stones can just rot in the truck for a month. I MUST ingrain the habit of pulling on the caber much quicker than I have been doing. ------------------------------ Going a little bit easy-after all, the Woodland HG were YESTERDAY. speed stuff... Stretch Cage hang cleans ... 4 x 95 / 4 x 135 / 2 x 4 x 155 narrow grip hip snatch ... 4 x 95 / 3 x 4 x 105 incline bench press at the "new" flatter angle ... 6 x 135 / 4 x 155 / 4 x 175 / 6 x 135 and *Throw* the bar through the ceiling (well, sorta) dumbell snatches .. off the floor ... 2 x 8 x 85 one set each side box sit-hump ups... I saw a basketball player doing these, so I tried them. Basically...sit on a milk crate. Now in one motion jump straight up and land with your feet on the crate. Down...butt on the crate, repeat. I did uh... "some" LOL Edited by Alan H - 4/30/12 at 10:39am |

Welcome back!
I know absolutely nothing about stone, but a bunch of us spent 2 whole sessions doing nothing but these drills and they worked like a charm for us. We'd watch on the iPhone on the field, video with the iPhone, then review frame by frame with CoachMyVideo on the iPhone. At the end, we were pretty good with the iPhone. :D

Throws tonight with Bethany Owen.
Did about an hour and a quarter on hammer with Bethany. We discovered that if she does a single wind and rip-it, she throws farther than doing 3 winds. I've noticed for a long time that her winds don't get any faster, tonight we proved it. So now she's single-winding it with a huge pull, lots of lift out of her legs and really sticking her right hip. Result...65-67 foot throws. Is 70 around the corner? Me, I worked on an idea I got from Jake Sullivan...."lock the left arm during the last wind". If I do that, or at least try to do that, the turnover speed at the "catch" behind the right shoulder is wicked-fast and I don't pull my arms in lifting to delivery. NICE....will be doing this. Did about a dozen throws, two were <80, everything else 82-85 feet. Still sore from Mondays gym-time. Thanks, Jake! Then did six HWFD throws...felt really easy and fast. one <30 feet, the rest 32-34 with one bomb out to 35 feet, wooohooo! Then did six LWFD throws .... getting pretty tired, here. The whole idea was "don't THINK, meat...THROW!". So I did. -->one at 45 feet, two at 48 feet, three at 50-51. These felt good even though I was tired. I got lots of hip/shoulder separation, and set up some big pulls. I stayed with the weight but didn't overdo it and hook it. NICE... Knocked off after two hours. |

Todays fun
Seated pylo box jumps...sit on one box, jump up to another. I switched to this after trying the Milk Crate jumps and not quite making it and landing full-force on my hip on the floor. Nothing bruised but my pride, but 'tain't no reason to do it again .... 10 jumps Stretch cage More seated pylo jumps ...just 7. I'm not very springy, need to work on this. incline bench press .... 2 x 4 x 135 FAST -throw the bar / 2 x 4 x 155 FAST / 4 x 175 not so fast but hey / 2 x 195 Zercher squats ... because they load the hips differently from back squats ... 6 x 135 / 2 x 4 x 185 / 2 x 3 x 215 / 2 x 235 ...not pushing the weight bigtime, here. Captains chair hanging leg lifts .... 10 , 10 bench dips with 45 pound plate in my lap .... 2 x 10 curls to impress the babez ... 8 x 85 / 8 x 90 *fast, not "pretty"* Sumo Deadlift High Pulls ... 6 x 110 and then my heart rate said "stop" so I did. out to the field, was gonna run suicides but the field was busy so went to the shotput ring and drilled positions, just positions and transitions for half an hour. Didn't throw anything heavy, just wadded up my t-shirt to have something in my hand. BTW, I've watched that video before, it IS good. |

Kaboom time at Arillaga.
Stretch...some woman was hogging the cage so I had to resort to Old Skool. 3-D hip stretches because Charlie Reid recommended them, too box jumps ... 10x 24-inch box. I SO need to do more of this. I'm STILL a tortoise from the zerchers I did on Friday. Hang Cleans .... 2 x 4 x 135 / 3 x 3 x 155 focus on FAST Strict OHP ... 6 x 135 / 2 x 3 x 155 / 3 x 3 x 135 FAST well, sorta. I *thought* about pressing fast, anyway. landmines ... 2 x 10 bar+60 db snatches ... 4 x 6 x 80-, 2 sets of 6 each side. I think, next time I'm gonna power clean off the floor instead of doing these. foam roll upright rows ... 3 x 6 x 85 because I wasn't tired enough. I feel SO much better than Sunday!! Those zerchers tightened me up something fierce. |

I HAD to throw something tonight, so....6 x 28 pound weight for distance. Felt balanced and looser than last time. Put two out at about 48, two at about 50 one at 52 and one....I pulled tape.... at FIFTY FIVE. OK, 54' 10" . Holy Moly. Then did 6, 42 pound weight for distance. One at about thirty, two at about 32, and then out of nowhere, I tried something new and Oh. My. God. 36 feet. I pulled tape on that one, too. I couldn't believe my eyes. I tried to replicate it and had two good throws at about 33, but couldn't come up with da bomb, again.But..............I know what I did. |

Sure, Al. I tried coming into the first turn the same way I enter the first turn in the LWFD. I used to cast fairly high and focus on getting my feet around. Now I'm having my hips drive where the weight goes. I'm coming into the first turn much more level, so there's less "up and down" jerkiness in the throw. I didn't think I was strong enough to do that with the 42. Well, guess what...son of a gun.
--------------- Another throws practice....tonight about 3 hours with 5 CHAC'ers. We did some hammer..mine all probably low 80's, nothing outstanding. Then we drilled caber, where we picked, standing on grass, ran up to the edge of the grass and pulled, so that the turn happened in the tanbark (no divots in the grass, and you're forced to be *ready* when you get to the edge of the grass)...focusing on pulling EARLY. I turned the Cardinal Caber II about 4x and the Whomper 3x, then out of gas on the last pull on the Whomper. Whomper = 87 pounder, 16' 4" or close enough. Then three of us did some LWFD and HWFD with the 42. New guy Randall is learning, fast. Robbie Krieger is getting better, scary fast. Me, I worked on incorporating a bit more separation after the first turn and more of just doing what I described above...landed some big throws, but I didn't have my cleats on so my feet were all over the place. Still, had some 34 foot 42'ers, and that's kickass for me. |

Also, It's been a LONG time since I've lost a weight during a throw, and I'm now throwing farther than ever. No hook grip, here.

I was going to hit the gym and do power cleans and sumo deadlift high pulls on Friday...
... but I forgot my shorts. So I changed into a workout t-shirt, went out to the truck and the IM field, puton my throwing shoes and did a shot, 45 minute hammer session. During this session I discovered an incredible insight which has eluded me for a very long time regarding hammer. The harder you throw it, the farther it goes. Oy, ve. I've spent 4 years working on radius and "the catch" somewhere in all that, I lost the "rip the snot out of it". Yesterday, after fussing with the usual technique things, and throwing the usual 80-83 feet, I decided try holding back a bit on wind #2, keep the left arm straight and just go like hell at the end, and forget the fancy stuff. Result? 87, 88 maybe 90. Probably 90. 5x in a row. And it's simple. OK, then. Considering the fatigue state of my hip flexors, it was probably good that I didn't lift anyway! Today, gonna go watch the Stanford womens rugby team in the NCAA championship match...GO CARDINALS! |
