Dear folks,
It’s with a heavy heart that I write to let you know that, due to many factors, not the least of which has been the long, frustrating, and ultimately fruitless pursuit of a suitable venue, the Executive Board of the Western Mass Highland Games has decided not to continue holding the games. We all thank all of you for your many years of support. I personally enjoyed working with all of you in my various capacities.
I am especially grateful to the ‘piping & drumming community for all the advice and assistance you’ve provided to me as director of those competitions. I will truly miss being at the registration tent, seeing you, and having the pleasure of listening to the pipes all day.
Slainte,
Wendy

Without a doubt my 2 best memories from those games are in the same year.....
dry dry June and the ground is flaky no one can dig their spikes in for a decent hammer toss and this games being the "New England Hammer Championships" I try to help the atheltes in finding a spot they can get spikes in..well my best friend Dr Bill finds a spot in the corner that offers good grip we move the trig and get set ..we notice a utilty wire about 80 feet downfield that seperates the field-but be that we are throwing the heavy hammer we say go for it..Terri james up 1st in flight launches a bomb looks like the bomb of all bombs but at 80 feet wraps around the wire twice and gos backawards for a net gain of 79-9..she is PO'd at Dr BIll for picking this spot and negatting "her bomb" at immortality..takes it in stride...the men and masters come up and lo and behold Dr Bill unlaunches a bomb but it happens to go atray and hit a light box that the utility wire is connected to-shorting out not only the field/fairgrounds but half of downtown westfield mass...word has it that the national guard was called out and they had to prevent downtown Westfield from hourdes of locusts, general anarchy, and total daubechery caused by one errant hammer toss!!

Wow Dan that is a bummer about Western Mass. That was a staple for us throwers. That is a great story about the Terri hitting the wire and me hitting that electrical box. We all said there was no way we could hit the wire or that box because they were too far away. Oh well, so much for letting loose pr throws and putting a town in the dark!

Bummer Dan,
I enjoyed the few years I was able to complete there. That last year, Hapy was AD and we were finishing up with WOB with a metal ladder tied to a utility pole with a thunderstorm fast approaching. I never saw that event move so fast.

this is sad stuff. never made it, but would've loved to.
would anyone be interested in coming to a games a little farther West (say Kinderhook, NY)? With the loss of the Chatham games and now this one, I'd be more than happy to do all the leg work and front the monies to get it up and running. Let me know.

Tough games to loose. I enjoyed the few times I went-a games that featured both stone, both hammers, no sheaf and no spin. Enjoy these smaller games while they last folks.
Thanks for your efforts Danny.

I noticed that both the Hammer championships and the Games were both listed on the schedule. Are they unfortunately still cancelled?

Yeah, the schedule is updated automatically. I suppose Glasgow Lands will pick up the hammer championship, just to keep it alive.

Such a shame and a big loss to New England games.
Maybe we should have a backyard games that weekend somewhere?

I have a couple irons in the fire for some new venues, but nothing concrete
yet.

Hapy, Killington, Vt., in Oct but they don't want to pay. I'll see if I can find the contact and pass on via PM. Too bad, great spot, base of the big run very flat and firm.

Off topic, but I think Pipes in the Valley would make a good venue for a Highlander type event. Big crowds and a pretty small space, just a hint, I mean thought.

I'd be more than happy to compete in this one as a Highlander or traditional games.
And I have access to an entire old soccer field in Kinderhook, NY, great setting, if space is needed for anything else.

Harpoon would be great, except we dont really have the room for throwing
anything.
Will have to check out the Killington thing with Don - that would be a great
spot - about an hour south of me, and fairly convenient for folks to get to.
I haven't heard from the Galloway cattle folks who were thinking about
doing something this spring, and I have been asked before to do something
at the Sheepdog trials (this is in the same field that the Rally was in)
So hopefully with all these maybes we can get one more up and running. If
not, we can always just have a nice BBQ at my place.
